He just had a NPOY candidate for 4 straight seasons and this years Freshman class looks like maybe one of his best classes to date. Next season has two top 100 kids signed. The Murrays left with eligibilty left. Joe Weiskamp left with eligibility left. Tyler Cook left with eleigibility left. At what point has Iowa basketball ever been in a position to obsorb that sort of attrition from it's top players every year? It doesn't matter if it was his 14th year or his 4th, Iowa is not a basketball program that just reloads and never has been. Think about Davis, Raveling, Lute.... did they all lose their best players to the NBA a year early? Could guys just transfer out to play for KS or KY if they played above their star level?I’m not going to single out individual players, but this is what I see:
1. A very, very young team with very little athleticism when compared to the rest of the Big Ten. A middling Michigan team destroyed them. Fran simply is not recruiting enough quick , big ten ready athletes.
2. No real leaders.
3. No defensive intensity (Fran talked about it post game).
This is Fran’s FOURTEENTH year, but he has no Weiskamp, Garza, Bohannon or Murray to lead the team.
Isn’t it time to retire? Seriously, isn’t it? It feels like Iowa is starting over. Why not start over with a young, energetic coach?
I like Fran but what is the up side now? There are a bunch of great young coaches out there, including an excellent young coach at Drake.
Am I missing something? Enlighten me please. It just seems like he is mailing it in now by recruiting average players close to home.
Average players close to home? Do you mean the IL Mr. Basketball when IL is a better program then us currently? Or Peyton Sandfort, who literally every school around here wanted.
Take it easy is all I am saying. Fran has done wonders and did it all while having almost no NIL or fan support from a fan base that literally doesn't give a shit. Iowa should consider itself lucky to retain a guy this good at what he does for this long.
