Fran's son has Thyroid cancer

It's probably a thyroid nodule and harmless. He'll have it biopsied and then removed. Probably have to take meds the rest of his life unless his body adjusts accordingly.

If you're going to have cancer this is one you should have.

hopefully it is just a non cancerous tumor. My wife had the exact same thing, doctors at the Uof I hospitals removed the thyroid about 20 years ago. No problems at all, just has to take the meds every day.
Good luck to the McCafferys

As I posted on our site, sorry to hear. Cancer doesn't care what team you cheer for, so we should all cheer for someone fighting the battle. Hope things turn out for the best.

I feel horrible for second guessing Fran vs Illinois.

Fortunately, there is not a known connection that know of between CRC of his parents and Thyroid CA in young adults.

If they do the Bx Monday, they should have pathology by Wed, and, God willing, Fran gets some good news before the BTT.

Prayers to Fran, his boy, and the family

I work in the cancer research field & have for the last 21 yrs. Obviously, any kind of cancer one is battling is worrisome and has the potential to be bad. That said, if one had to choose a cancer to get, one would be thyroid or testicular followed by prostate. This can be very treatable and responds well to surgery & radiation, if needed. I'm not sure this has been positively confirmed yet. The normal work-up includes often times a fine needle aspirate which can show many false positives when doing a FNA on the thyroid. There is a good chance this FNA shows signs of a follicular neoplasm but may not be a malignancy. We will see. If it is a malignancy and is resected, the Pt will go on Synthroid or Levothyroxine which is very easy to take with very minimal, if any, side effects. They will just have to monitor his levels with his development. I have reviewed many "suspicious" FNA's in my work which don't turn out to be cancer. Overall, luckily, the odds are good. But, it is never comfortable when it is a loved one or you. We will wish him well.

Man, I hope that it isn't cancerous, but if it is something they have to operate on quickly, Fran should probably just hand over the keys. Speraw was a head man for many years and at one point was rumored to be in the running for the Iowa head job. We couldn't ask for a better assistant on the bench. There is just no job that can take priority over a sick child, especially when there is someone who has already been head coach for one game this year. Who knows - maybe the double T and suspension will come back to help this team after all bince it gave Kurt the opportunity to run the team.

Speraw almost got the Nets job for **** sake

Really hoping this turns out to be completely innocuous. Surgery is never fun, though ('specially when it's one of your kids) - hang tough, McCaffery family.

Prayers out to em indeed. I'm sure Fran will make the best decision for where he needs to be.

Reports saying that Fran McCaffery's son has cancer are premature. Patrick has a tumor on his thyroid that still needs to be examined.

No wonder people dislike the media.

Thoughts and prayers to his family..

Why do you say this? What Harty says is in line with all I have read and what Coach himself says in his statement. Right now they know there is a tumor present, they are going to do surgery and then test the tumor to determine whether it is malignant, or not.

I hope that turns out to be way premature. Anyway, this type of thing puts basketball into perspective.

How old is Patrick?

Thoughts and Prayers go out to Patrick, Fran, Margaret and the rest of the McCaffery family.
