Fran's Recruiting

I really feel that Fran has done an excellent job at recruiting. Sure he has had a few misses at point guard (Ulis, Carton, Suggs which would have been difference makers), but he absolutely recognizes talent. He excels at finding the diamonds in the rough that want to come to Iowa City and develop for 3 - 4 years. This is absolutely what the Hawks need and that is the only way our program will succeed. The future is bright with PMac, Murray twins, JT, Ulis and Perkins.
He is willing to take on transfers, but only if they fit within the culture of the program. We may need a couple next year and I am excited to see what transpires. Then there is the youngest son and it seems like I have heard good things about him also. Can anyone fill me in on his background and potential?

High basketball IQ isn't everything, sometimes you need a couple of guys that can bend steel and jump out of the gym. Seems every other team in the nation has some of these guys. I know it's hard to get them into cold Iowa from the warm south or moderate west coast but other schools have done it. There's a reason you don't see the 80's Celtics anymore. That being said he has some nice athletes on the team for next year and it's a team that can do some of the things he wants to do like trap and press and push the ball. That group he put out there in the first half were more than holding their own against Oregon, but when he went back to his starters Oregon found themselves and knew they could push the ball against us. I would love to see Wiesy come back and play with a faster unit that pushes the ball and plays hawking defense. I just wish that Ulis had gotten more playing time.

It's hard to nit pick his recruiting too much. Sure landing Foster, Carton and some others woulda been awesome but you can't land everyone. I think that kid from Waukee we got coming next yr is basically going to be a taller JW type of player. Nothing wrong with that. But he's not going to be an explosive athlete. But a dang good player hopefully.

To me how coaches navigate the transfer portal is going to become just as if not more important. We used to give ISU so much grief for leaning on transfers so much. I'm afraid with the pure volume of good players jumping around if we don't we could miss out...

Fran's To Do list

1. Upgrade the guard play significantly.
2. Upgrade the guard play significantly.
3. Upgrade the guard play significantly.
4. Get a defensive coach in here that teaches proper help defense. Extend your man defense out passed the perimeter and deny passes ala Duke's typical man to man style.
5. Upgrade the guard play significantly.
6. Hit the transfer portal and get another big man as well while you are shopping for real point guards and faster off guards that can shoot the ball.

I like your list, but I'd like to add one thing. I think we need to upgrade the guard play significantly.

Anybody you like?

Marcus Carr is an interesting name. So is Mashburn although he and CJ would be kinda redundant. They are similar players I think.

I'm surprised to not see some Iowa State guys in there MN and Indiana players aren't a surprise though. It's early yet though and since ISU has hired a new coach so quickly I'm sure he's trying to rerecruit guys to stick around that he may like....

Not trying to nitpick, but what defines "similar players"? In my opinion 2/3's of our entire team is made of similar players. I see a team full of long and lengthy players that shoot well from the perimeter, but struggle creating their own shots. One of my biggest complaints with Fran is that the lineup lacks diversity, not based on skin color, but based on type of player.

Oh to me anyway I think CJ and Mashburn are really similar. In size and style. They don't handle the ball a ton. Both are most effective when catching and shooting and can dribble drive a little. But they aren't high flyers trying to get all the way to the rim so much. CJ may be the better defender and ball handler. CJs assist to TO ratio is unreal. But yeah those are reasons I think they are similar in style of play.

I really like Perkins. If Joe T can play under control and not try to do too much, I really like him. I haven't seen enough of Ulis to say.
Yeah Perkins seems like an aggressive guy that's not afraid. Not sure about his skill level just yet with his ball handling and shooting. But dude defends and hustles and is physically capable of doing them at a higher level. Two things we need more of the most.

JT would have to make a significant leap with his pace of play and just court awareness/IQ out there to be what we'd all like but hopefully he can. I'm ok with his limited range so long as he isn't turning it over a lot and plays well.

Agree on Ulis as well. It'd be tough to try evaluating what little we've seen of him too much. He's got a solid PG body though. It'll be fun to see him develop
