Had a chance to listen tonight as I was driving cross state at just the right time. Too much to list in one post, but a few things stuck out to me.
- As intense as Fran is on the sidelines, he was pretty relaxed and joked around quite a bit on the show. Even poking a little fun at the Hawks' defense last night. It's easy to see why his players like him. Very real guy with a sense of humor.
-It's quite a balancing act to keep all these players happy with minutes. But he understands how key that is to their success, and leans on the head coaching experience of Dillard and Speraw to help with that. The players seem to buy in...he likes the character of his guys.
-He's not worried about Woodbury, realizes he's still developing. My sense is that he understands each player's psyche and how to coach them as individuals. And he's good at putting guys into the right situations. Some games will suit Woody more than others...for now.
-He loves McCabe. I tend to agree that Zach doesn't get enough credit for how important he is to this team.
-Dom Uhl could be a real diamond in the rough. Moving in from Germany, He hasn't been in the AAU spotlight. Coach Francis went to see another "top recruit" play (along with a lot of other D1 coaches) in a game against Uhl. Came away more impressed with Uhl so Iowa jumped on him.
-Fran really knows basketball. He got into Xs and Os briefly a few times, and I picked up a few things I hadn't before.
I like our coach.
