Fran's radio show with Dolph

Had a chance to listen tonight as I was driving cross state at just the right time. Too much to list in one post, but a few things stuck out to me.

- As intense as Fran is on the sidelines, he was pretty relaxed and joked around quite a bit on the show. Even poking a little fun at the Hawks' defense last night. It's easy to see why his players like him. Very real guy with a sense of humor.

-It's quite a balancing act to keep all these players happy with minutes. But he understands how key that is to their success, and leans on the head coaching experience of Dillard and Speraw to help with that. The players seem to buy in...he likes the character of his guys.

-He's not worried about Woodbury, realizes he's still developing. My sense is that he understands each player's psyche and how to coach them as individuals. And he's good at putting guys into the right situations. Some games will suit Woody more than others...for now.

-He loves McCabe. I tend to agree that Zach doesn't get enough credit for how important he is to this team.

-Dom Uhl could be a real diamond in the rough. Moving in from Germany, He hasn't been in the AAU spotlight. Coach Francis went to see another "top recruit" play (along with a lot of other D1 coaches) in a game against Uhl. Came away more impressed with Uhl so Iowa jumped on him.

-Fran really knows basketball. He got into Xs and Os briefly a few times, and I picked up a few things I hadn't before.

I like our coach.

-He was pretty quite about other recruiting...but did mention that "we have 2 more scholarships", and I got the feeling that he knew they were gonna be key losing Marble, Zach and Mel.

really, a D1 bb coach knows more about the sport than you do. breathtaking insight.

He has a knack for explaining the game so that it makes sense, even to the fan. This is what I took from your comment. I also think this is another reason he's a good coach. He communicates very well.

What does this even mean? More like ank acted like a d and people rightfully called him out on it.

Meh, the OP deserves some of it.

He has been the most insufferable DB on the football board up until the last 2-3 weeks. He hasnt posted much over there lately though.

Agreed. Fran is a welcome change. I think he is as good of an Xs and Os guy as Tom Davis - but has a passion for recruiting that Davis really never had. He has personality and knows how to win, which make him a huge step up from Lick, and he isn't an arrogant dbag like Alford so we are in the plus column there. His courtside demeanor is more like Bo Pellini than Lute Olson - so if there was one knock that would be it. I love his passion and his work ethic. He has built the deepest team in Iowa history, and we are back to being at least relevent in college BB again. The ascent gets more difficult as you near the top, and while we are not yet a B1G championship caliber team at this point IMHO, it's not unreasonable to think we could be there in the near future.

I'm really glad we have White Magic. It was a great hire after first a bad one and then followed by one abyismal one.

I love Fran. I think he'd be a hell of a coach to play for. Thank goodness he came along and has resurrected our bball program. Hopefully he doesn't leave for greener pastures anytime soon.

In other news, Ankle is still a d*ckhole. Surprise, surprise...

Incorrect. I praise KFz when he deserves it (including the last few weeks, but I guess you only read what you want, no surprise there) and have criticized him when it's warranted. (I'm not on an island there)

That's without even going into how people (like yourself) wildly misinterpret and distort what is actually posted to suit their own agenda. But I've come to understand that's as much of a hobby for many on these boards...as playing internet tough guy. if you disagree with my opinion...that's fine. Everyone is entitled to their opinion.

The more intelligent members here are capable of stating it without jr high level insults...and also capable of considering differing opinions without becoming instant jerks. Some aren't.

Ive read this board for 4+ years and the last couple you have done nothing but try to turn every thread on the football forum into a negative KF thread.

The "KFz" crap gets old especially when its repeated ad nasueum as you did for a very long time. If you cant take being called out for a post then dont be such a negative tool on the football board just because you dont like KF as Iowa's coach.

Let's be honest, you go much further out of your way to criticize KF than you do to praise him, and you do so on a consistent basis. Considering the year KF has led the Hawkeyes to it's to the point where it isn't really warranted.

There's no reason for this to turn into yet another KF debate. Thanks for the OP. Lots of good info, and I didn't hear the interview so I appreciate it.

tangent aside, i also really like Fran. he let's fans "behind the curtain" just enough so that they feel like he's being real with them. yes, he does BS a lot, but he also understands how to involve the fanbase. i'm not going to use this as an opportunity to bash KF's style with the media, but i will say that i prefer Fran's approach a lot more.
