I love Mike G and he gutted it out the last 4 minutes but I have noticed the last two games these taller, heavier guards are taking him to the rim and it hurts the defense. But what can Fran do as Mike G's ballhandling and ability to penetrate is about the best on the team.

Clemmons is bigger and seems to keep his position better against the guard trying to drive by him.

Should we be playing mostly zone with Mike G in?

Oh well, that was a really gutsy last 5 minutes by the hawks, great to see.

Agreed. He made some nice drives of his own to the rim and made some good decisions late. I feel far more comfortable with him in the lineup than Sapp. Committed some really awful TOs early in the first half, tho

MG is better, by quite a margin.

Clemmons isn't better on d, the op just assumes he's better because he's black.

Gesell is the better defender. He plays with his feet while clemmons uses his hands and collects fouls. Gesell didn't play his best game but the team is better with him on the floor at both ends.

Mike G is no slouch on D.....He is comparable to Troy Skinner.

Gesell's D isn't weak at all. Tonight wasn't his best game by any stretch, but his defense has been pretty salty this year. He's definitely the better player, but Clemmons has been playing better than he was earlier in the year. I feel much more comfortable with him on the floor than I did a couple months ago.

I'm not even sure AC plays better D than Mike.

And the offensive end goes to Mike so it's not even close.

Btw they are both listed at 6'1 and clemmons is listed 5 lbs heavier...I don't think that really is a big enough difference to assess being bigger.

I mentioned Mike G's defense the last couple of games. He is normally very good but some of these bigger faster guards can get their shoulder past him and then he has no chance.

That is stupid thing for you to say because that was not in my thought process.

Clemmons tonite seemed to be moving his feet well and keeping guys from constantly beating him.

I wish Mike G would get 25-30 minutes a game.

Look at my posts about him from last year. I think MG has the best ball handling skills and ability to get by a guy and then blow to the rim or make a nice pass to a teammate.

He usually keeps the offense moving, and I think if he were playing the 2 spot his jump shot % would be better as he would be looking to shoot.

no dilemma at all, MG is the best option.

Gesell guarded Abrams when he was in and he is 6'2 and 190 lbs...one inch taller than gesell and the same weight. The kid score 3 more points than gesell in 11 more min...had less assists and the same number of turnovers. This was a below average day for mike but he was not consistently getting beat by bigger guards tonight. Bertrand and rice were bigger than mike but they were typically matched with marble, oglesby, white, Uthoff.

These guys were also getting beat off the dribble.

The last 10 minutes of the first half for Iowa was not good tape for their defensive work.

Mike Gesell is a heck of a basketball player. But I really like Clemmons too. Gesell was the one to pick up the slack last year when Marble was hurt/in a funk mid last year. But earlier in the year last year (when Gesell was hurt), Clemmons looked great. I think Clemmons has been fighting a bit of a sophomore slump this year. He has looked better the last couple games but hasn't been as aggressive/on with his shot this year. I expect big things from both players in the future. Both will need to pick up the slack next year with Marble graduating.

clemmons needs to stop dousing his hands in butter before games...

Seriously the guy looks like he is dribbling and passing a fish at times.

He was clutch against ISU last year - but he just hasn't stepped up yet this year.

Play with some confidence kid.
