Fran's Contract

I'm much more sick of Kirk than I am of Fran but I'm not happy with either of them right now. But, as Jon says, fatigue is cumulative. I've had a lot longer to get sick of Kirk's oatmeal-ass style of painful wins and losses to bad teams.

i agree with you. and i'll add that i'm going to be fair. i am a big fran fan; but these season, so far, isn't acceptable. he needs to fix it. if he doesn't, then we need someone who will. but he gets a chance to fix it. that's the same attitude i have with kirk. but kirk hasn't changed several things, but...developmental program.

I think part of the frustration is we've seen the extension after extension from Kirk with minimal/any improvement and we're tired of a middle of the pack program that can't seem to get to the next level. Also as another posted, Kirk has also had much more success than Fran, but that said I think based on recent performance they should both be on the hot seat.

we haven't won the B1G in 13 years and even when we finished 12-0 we didn't win the B1G. so, yes, there has been success, but outside of 2009 and 2015, we've been a 7 win program. where is the success in that?

Like I said I think both should be on the hot seat and don't think either coach's past is strong enough to get them a free pass to years of mediocrity.

You should not be going winless in conference play in year 8. It’s difficult to compare sports, but 2012 in football is the only year comparable in terms of how bad it was to this basketball season. However, Iowa football had a lot of key injuries in 2012 whereas Iowa basketball is basically fully healthy. Kirk’s highs in the early to mid 2000’s are way better than anything Fran has done in basketball thus far.

fran has taken iowa to 6 straight post seasons out of his first 7.

Is that really saying much? Just saying...90+ teams make the postseason in basketball. Not too hard to accomplish.
Kirk has his frustrations and down years yes, but there are at least a few top ten finishes and top level bowl games in there. If Fran had made the equivalent of that... sweet 16 or greater, or a top ten finish I think folks would feel differently. Simple making the postseason is a pretty low bar, especially counting the NIT as part of that.

it amazes folks have turned so fast on Fran but kirk gets a pass every year because we're a developmental school in football. apparently, we aren't a developmental school in basketball.

In today's society, win or get axed. Plain and simple. If you win or perform , you keep your damn job. Is it really too much to be competitive? Oh maybe we are, but we're still getting hammered by 15 points a game. Things need to change. Coaching, recruiting, whatever, but as fans, we should expect more than what we're seeing on the field, or on the court

The last 3 classes were quite a bit better than previous years in both sports. We've already had better recruiting, on paper at least. Now it's time to see if it shows on game day.

Making the post season 6 years in a row is not something a lot of teams do. Our good seasons need to be better for sure. But we are at least a little better than average. It's funny how quick "a little better than average" isn't good enough after being bottom of the barrel.

bogey, i will remind you that the standard bearer for the Iowa basketball program (for many, many fans) is Mr. Davis Davis. Mr. Davis didn't have to deal with RPI's, SOS's, first 4 in, first 4 out, etc, etc. You win 20 games and you're in the B1G, then you're probably in the NCAA. It is much, much tougher, now, to get into the NCAA. There were very few preseason tourney's (Great Alaska Shootout and Maui Classic are the only two I can think of) so every season, Mr. Davis was playing 11 Drakes and then ISU non conference. He had a build in 10+ wins going into the B1G. That has also changed. Non conference competition has greatly increased in the last 10+ seasons. The criterion has changed. We would have been in the NCAA last season using the same standard Mr. Davis had to deal with.

Mr. Davis reached the Sweet 16 or beyond, twice: 86/87 & 87/88; his first two seasons at Iowa and with ALL George Raveling recruits. After that, zero times, then 10 straight seasons not, then once again his final season. 3 times out of 13. And Mr. Davis became a legend at Iowa.

when did today's society begin? 2010? I can count many times kirk wasn't held to that standard since 2010. Look, This hoops season isn't a good one and Fran is responsible for fixing it. But some fans seem to be taking out their frustration for not having any beaches or mountains on Fran. This is Fran's first flop season. kirk has had multiple flop seasons.

If you don’t make the second round of the tourney you are irrelevant in college basketball. Fran has flopped 5 out of 7 years and that’s not counting this year

The best time to fix a problem is BEFORE it becomes a bigger problem.

Since KF was allowed to do it a few times, Crean underperforming assistants from staff. Bring in a recruiting specialist that knows how to play around the edges. The other one must be a defensive coordinator that gets the patended B1G style of shove, grab, elbow and chuck.

We will have boatloads more wins, less graduations, and many news conferences dealing with non basketball related events.
Edge of edge is OK no? A little "larceny" is sometimes needed to keep up with neighbors no?
