Frank Martin: Would you take him at the end of the season?

He gets talent, his players like playing for him and he is winning. There has never been a hint of scandal at KSU under him, despite the huge AAU ties. He would bring big-time talent to Iowa if he came.

The reason I ask is that he is in negotiations for a contract extension now and it appears the AD is sounding like they will go to $1.1M from $780,000. It is being kept quiet, and neither side is talking about the negotiations. However, Kevin Keitzman on Sports Radio 810 down here in KC (a KSU alum) said that the KSU AD gave Martin an initial first offer of a $100,000 raise, that Martin was insulted by. They are keeping the whole thing out of the press, but Keitzman is quite convinced, based upon his source, that this part of the story is on the level.

What if you could get him for $1.7M and his two assistant coaches, who are VERY highly compensated for college basketball assistants because of their recruiting ties, for a nice raise of $75,000 to $100,000 over what they make now?

Would you do it? I think I would, and I am not currently in the camp that thinks we should fire Lick at the end of the season, either.

I would take Martin only if I wanted him to punch a kid on the bench. This guy is a ticking time-bomb. There is a reason why they are not close on contract talks!

I disagree, ForeverHawk.

That incident a couple of weeks ago was blown out of proportion and I don't think anyone that follows that program really has any concerns in that regard. I follow the program I don't worry that he might do something that would be worse than what happened the other week or that he will even repeat something that is at that level of badness, so to speak.

I was thinking the idea would generate a little more talk, though, other than the Dino references. After all, it is a coaching idea that hasn't been thrown out here before.

I don't think that incident was thab bad either, but where there is smoke there is fire. I think he has an anger problem and it may be an issue. If he were 3-16, that incident may have gotten him fired??

Martin also has a shady past down in Florida as a High School coach. I believe he was accused of recruiting kids to come play for him or something related to that. Looks like he could be a member of the mob to.

I would rather keep Lickliter and his recruiters anyday and stay in the Big 10 basement than have a coach like Martin and his recruiters. I've heard how many of you just know he is dirty although no one has any evidence whatsoever so with all that knowledge I wouldn't want Martin at Iowa bringing in those 5 star players. I would much rather have Lickliter and his recruiters and continue waiting forever because they do it the right way and we all know that Martin is doing it the wrong way...he just has to be doing it the wrong way because he has turned KSUs program around quickly. We all know that can't be done because Lickliter is a COY and he isn't doing it at Iowa so it Can't be done without cheating.

I think Huggins turned around KSU with the help of Martin. No doubt his staff can recruit. I think there is more to the story as to why they have not ironed out a contract!!!

I tried to post a one-word response earlier: "No." The system apparently won't accept a post that short, so let me put it this way:

NO.

No Thanks!!!

Will the real Frank Martin please stand up!!!

"Martin coached the powerful Miami Senior High School basketball team in Florida from 1995 to 1999. While he was there, the team did win two state championships. But the school didn’t win clean. Florida High School Activities Association found that the team’s violations of its rules so egregious that it vacated the team’s 1998 championship and stopped just short of suspending the school from fielding a team. Specifically, the high school sports governing body found that five players should have been ineligible for using fake addresses to show they lived in Miami High’s enrollment boundaries when, in fact, they should have been going to school elsewhere."

Yes, I would in a second. He has ties all around the country and has a team where his players bust their arse's for him. I understand that people assume recruiting ties and black athletes translates into cheating which is really sad. If you can bring people to Manhatten, KS you can bring them to Iowa City.

Someone even went as far as saying he recruited kids to his high school team? Is there a big city high school coach who doesn't do that?
