Fran - Will You Please Teach Them ........

......... to BLOCK OUT!! It's nauseating watching them give up O rebounds They aren't doing the basics to gain possessions. A shot goes up and they just look up and automatically go forward instead of finding the nearest guy to block out.

I realize these are basics so if you don't teach them again, please give them consequences for not BLOCKING OUT! This is one area of the game that could really help a young team out as it is just basic ball.

I will address Iowa's paltry 3 pt defense later!!

Carry on.

It's an epidemic that has infested the high school and AAU ranks. It's like they are programmed to stand around once the ball goes up. It's awful.

It is and it is systemic. Sad that the basics are going by the wayside. I was small when I played and loved blocking out, but I had to.

They're going to have to start playing more zone. I'm surprised this hasn't happened more lately.

Zone is sort of like throwing in the towel. It should be used for things like rest and if you occasionally play someone you can't handle, or to mix things up. Won't help them get much better and used to speed.

In addition, zone doesn't help the blocking out problem. More difficult to block out when playing zone. Yes, zone used to do things like hiding a player in foul trouble etc.

A zone can be very effective if taught, executed and coached correctly. If it's used for "rest", it will be complete dogshit.

Bottom line is this for Iowa. Until they commit to doing the correct principles defensively(sitting down in a stance constantly, fighting through and OVER screens correctly, getting a body on someone when the shot goes), they will struggle on that end of the floor no matter what they're in. And it's not just the freshman either, guys that have been here 2,3,4 years are struggling greatly on that end.

---- This is a bit disconcerting.
