Fran talked about bright spots in the game...

I think what he was saying was that it wasn't their defense that was stopping us, it was us not making the correct decisions to break the defense. He was saying that they had prepared the team to break the defense and they had everything given to him to win tonight and just couldn't get it done. Fran's not the kind of coach that says "yep 1-3-1, we can't beat that", Fran would say "we can absolutely shred that D up and tonight we couldn't get it done but in the future we will. And we will get better"

Exactly. I agree.

Nine times? How are you calculating a blowout?

Statsheet.com says Iowa is 4-4 in blowouts this year.

That's for games decided by 19 or more. We got beat by Indiana by 14...but that was a blowout. Game was nowhere near being a true 14-point game after about the midway point of the first half. I'm too lazy to go back and look now, but there's probably a few other games like that (ISU comes to mind, too). Just games where we never had control (or lost it very early).

My personal bright spots after every game like this. Brommer, 3 fouls 54 seconds, is being replaced by Adam Woodbury. Cartwright, turnover machine/point guard is being replaced by Mike Gessel.

Agree that our guard play was absolutely awful. I don't know if McCaffrey folded the tent last night and said to hell with it, but leaving Cartwright in was nuts. I would have rather seen Oglesby play the point with Marble and give us another shooter on the floor. Cartwright didn't attack with the dribble, was double and triple teamed and let himself get trapped and tried throwing lobs from 25 feet away.

Safe to say there are 3 starting spots open for next season.

what sucks is Iowa has to play them 1 more time. Hopefully someone can tighten the rims on their side of the court. I would hate to see Gatens go out on a blow out loss on senior night.

Ya, love the bright spots after a 20 point loss to a doormat. Low expectations, low results.

Doormat??? Do you even watch or pay attention to Bball?? NW is 15-8 (5-6) with a 37 RPI rating and 10th ranked strength of schedule! Hardly a doormat.

Im surprised White and Basabe didnt do more against the defense from the NW big men.

Looked more like a problem of getting them the ball in position. NW is really poor on D down low, I thought Basabe could have had 20+ easily.... and not just getting a few late buckets in slop time.

This game was on the Iowa PGs

This is what was frustrating to watch. NW could not match up with the Hawks man to man, at all. The few times they did switch to man Iowa got easy buckets. So credit to NW for playing the 1-3-1 which was able to stop the Hawks.
But the Hawks should still be able to beat that D and get good looks down low. They weren't able to do that and like you said, this was primarly the fault of the PGs and wing players. Primarily Cartwright as Marble did not see much time at the point last night.

Going with that definition, I still come up short of nine games.

How do you know it was the 1-3-1? I not saying i disagree but why do you think that is what cost us the game?

Because it complete took Iowa out of its motion offense. The Hawkeyes had nothing for it. They had no offensive zone breaker. It's not like they were getting good shots and missing, they were struggling to find an open shot and get the ball below the FT line extended. All because of the 1-3-1.

I have to agree with you that this loss was on the PG's. White and Basabe could of both scored mid-20"s. The problem is that Carwright has been horrible. He should of been pulled for anyone on the bench. Marble was almost as bad a distributing the ball and the turnovers they had were junior high caliber. If you get Basabe the ball when he can do something with it he would have dominated the baseline. Same with White. They had no answer for our post play yet we couldn't deliver.

Two things:
1- The purple on that court would drive my nuts as a player.
2- The Hawks for their next home game need to have Will Ferrell introduce the players.

Just caught this post because of the quote above.

I agree. The 3 guards were miserable against the 1-3-1. Marble was the only one who was quasi-effective. Cartwright was really awful, as was May. Both turned it over regularly vs the 1-3-1.

They got outplayed and Fran got outcoached from the start. Cartwright was clueless the entire night, bringing the ball up, holding it and then floating a jump pass across to Marble, a complete waste every time. Fran refused to sub Cartwright out and coach him to do something else.

On D they were just as clueless, they can't guard ANYONE. Man to man they didn't help or get around on the back cuts or screens and in zone they were super slow to react to the open 3-pt shooter, both things they should've been supremely aware were NW's strengths. If anything, they should spend the next week learning to play DEFENSE with more effort, urgency and aggressivness (without fouling 3 times in 45 sec, Brommer). They need to focus on being very good at one style defense before they start playing multiple styles per game.

Last night was depressing, I thought they had progressed further than that during this season.
