Fran should go nuts if refs allow this v MSU

When he drives and then takes the short pull-up, MSU's Appling routinely manages to get away with a slight push with his forearm to create space and knock the defender off balance before taking the shot. Makes it less likely his shot will be blocked. Harris does a similar move but it's more leading with his elbow into the chest of the defender. Both are fouls but rarely called. Both players are so adept at creating space it would almost appear ... coached?

It actually seems like ever since Fran's tirade in the Kohl Center that the officiating in Iowa's games has been above average. There were some terrible calls in the Michigan game but some of that is just life in the road in the B1G.

The Gazette had a good article Sunday....flashing back to the game against MSU in the BTT.....and just how physical and poorly ref'd that game was. Three of the descriptions made me laugh out loud because I had forgotten about them until reading this.

First this, "Nearly five minutes into the second half, Hawkeyes guard Devyn Marble pump-faked a 3-pointer and received a left elbow to his face from Nix. Marble promptly released the ball, which rolled backward. Iowa lost possession for a shot-clock violation and officially it was recorded as a blocked shot."

Then this, "Michigan State led 52-49 with 2:21 left in the game. Michigan State center Derrick Nix turned right, then spun left around Iowa’s Zach McCabe. Nix took three steps, crashed into a moving McCabe and pushed the ball off the glass for a basket. McCabe was whistled for the foul by veteran official Ted Valentine as an incensed Iowa Coach Fran McCaffery sought a traveling call."

Then this, "On Iowa’s next possession, Iowa’s Josh Oglesby missed a 3-point attempt. While raising his right arm, Payne wrapped his left arm around McCabe’s neck to prevent the Iowa forward from grabbing the rebound. Payne dragged McCabe from under the basket to almost half court. There was no call."

Finally this, "Iowa chopped its deficit from eight points to 57-56 with 1:02 left. Michigan State worked the shot clock down to three seconds on its next possession. Gary Harris rose up for a jumper just inside the 3-point line, and Iowa forward Aaron White deflected the ball, which was directed to Iowa teammate Melsahn Basabe. Official Jim Schipper whistled White for the foul, and Harris knocked down two free throws."

I loved this little ditty at the end of the article, "Neither Valentine nor Schipper has worked an Iowa game this year."

Hopefully we can repay MSU in spades tomorrow. Oh, and if Teddy V is officiating the game, I may not even watch it because that'll tell me the league office has pretty much pre-determined who they want to win.

I forgot about Marble getting hit in the face. The other three plays I can vividly remember. I also remember Fran getting so ****** that he threw he jacket on the floor, but McCabe hustled out and grabbed it before the officials saw anything.

If there was ever a game that Fran should have purposely tried to get thrown out of, it was that one. Once White got called for that foul, he should have pulled a Eustachy and walked right onto the court and given that entire crew the what-for. And it wouldn't have been like the Wisky game where the media made him out to be a petulant child. Many in the media had his back after the MSU game....Gottleib even going so far as to say that Iowa got "Valentined".

If they want to call fouls on Iowa so be it. If I'm Fran I call timeout after the 1st BS foul. I tell the team that anytime a Michigan State player enters the lane he doesn't get a shot up to the glass. Go for the block but foul if necessary. We can beat Michigan State at their own game this time around.

Personally, I thought that's what he was going for with the jacket, and then McCabe went in and ****ed it all up.

Last years Iowa State/ku game had a stroke of genius IMO from Self. Self got a T only a few minutes into the game and really helped set the tone. Might not be a bad idea for Fran in this one if the first few possessions are totally "let them play".

That's a good point. However, the difference between Self and Fran is that Self has the ability to show restraint when need be. Fran, the crazy Irishman he is, sometimes is incapable of showing that kind of restraint. And I'd be nervous that once he got that first T, that the ref would say something that would set Fran off and next thing you know, he's heading to the Carver locker rooms.

It was JO that scooped up Fran's coat after he chucked it onto the floor. Iowa was coming back down in transition. One official saw it...but didn't have the guts to toss FM at that point.

Many other B1G fans not named MSU remarked without prompt how Iowa got screwed that night.

Lots of players do this sort of the thing but MSU players have always been great at the art of fouling while on offense and getting away with it. Mateen Cleaves was a master at it. I remember when he would drive, or attempt to drive, past the man guarding him, grab the defenders wrist, and hold it to his waist and drew a foul out of it. How refs let him get away with that is crazy.

I've always felt Tom Izzo subscribes to the theory that "they can't call everything", so he has his guys be super aggressive knowing that the refs just can't and won't call everything. Eventually it so frustrates the other team that they start making mistakes and MSU gets the victory.

From what I've seen so far, the Big Ten officials tend to 'let them play.' I've seen so many fouls in the paint this season and the whistles were dead silent.

I forgot to mention this before, but regarding Fran's tirade in Kohl Center, did anyone see when Kevin Ollie of UConn did the same damn thing and got no attention from it, except the media putting blame only on the officials who tossed him?

Exactly. He knows if it turns into a whistle-fest every time his players commit a foul, the blame will quickly shift to the officiating crew, not to his coaching tactics, which frequently border on the disgusting. So it's foul as much as you can, it won't get called.

Jon's power rankings piece on the home page includes an excellent clip that tells you everything you need to know about Tom Izzo. Surprised this hasn't been linked elsewhere.

I would be all in favor of Fran getting himself T'd up by the first TV timeout if the refs start showing any inkling that they are going to allow to happen what happened in the BTT. Establish early that we aren't going to put up with it, plus with the hometown fans behind him, I'm pretty sure the refs would change their tune pretty quickly. And if they don't, then use all 11 guys to pound the $hit out of them. We've got more guys than they do.

You know what? I would support this 100%. I am really sick of MSU's thuggery. Also, did you see Izzo's post Michigan game rant against the officiating? I thought that was against BT rules. I have not seen any disciplinary action taken against Izzo...big surprise. End rant.
