Fran needs to re-assess the practice/workout program

There's no other answer for it. They had a week between games and in the 2nd half, they looked like they were running around on shot legs. Uhl and Baer don't have much bounce in their legs either. And that's very telling because they have played less minutes lately.
Uthoff's legs are completely shot and it showed from the minute he started warming up. You can over train your legs to the point where they just don't have any bounce or ability to perform explosively. If they hadn't had a week off, I might not have picked up on it. The problem for us and Uthoff is that you typically need a week or 2 of inactivity for the muscles to recover. It's different for every person of course but I'm saying here and now, we can't expect Uthoff to carry this team.
I hate to say it because I really wanted the BIG title. There's no way we can win it now. I'm not even sure we'll have much left by the time the tourney rolls around. The 2nd game on a 1 day turnaround will be extremely hard for this team to physically overcome.

Good point, I would think with a week off Fran would give the team a few days off to recharge the batteries.

I think Fran should first assess his decision not to use timeouts when he had plenty at his disposal when the team clearly looked tired and Wisconsin was quickly gaining momentum.

I'm more interested in reassessing Fran if the collapse continues. Is "borderline NCAA team" his ceiling?

I would like to know if by the end of a season lean is just fatigued. Would more muscle on players help to combat fatigue. It's obvious Fran likes thinner players but it may not work in the BIG. I would look at diet and sleep issues also.

Really? Wow!. This thread has some great potential.. :)

I know shot legs when I see them. Uthoff's legs are gone. That might not be on Fran. That might be Uthoff spending too much time in the gym outside of practice.

Punish the team by making them run several vertical races up the hills like this.

Teams are playing Iowa differently and it's showing. In case people wondering it all started against Illinois.

And since you keep wanting to bring up Uthoff lighting. Here some stats for you to look at. Uthoff is averaging in his last 5 games 19.2 points and 7.8 boards all those stats are above his season average!! That's the guy you say has lost a step. The reality is Last night Wisconsin and especially Nigel Hayes was making damn sure Uthoff wasn't going to beat them. They attack Uthoff all night.

My comment was in regard to how Uthoff looked last night. I love Uthoff. I was simply stating what I think I saw. I would have never noticed it if he hadn't had a week off.
And In fairness to Fran, it might not be his fault if the players are pushing themselves too hard before/after practice. If I were Fran, I'd advise more film study vs gym time, if that's the case.

We are all looking for answers, since we love our Hawkeyes. I like the way this thread addresses the issues and the disagreements are carried out well (NO sarcasm.) Some very interesting thoughts above...thanks!
