Fran "I'd play 13 guys if we had a game tomorrow"

Joe will not redshirt and he will start his first game. I don't think you realize how good he is.

You are saying Joe is going to beat out and, essentially, bench Moss, right? I completely disagree with that. Hey, I understand how good he is. But I also understand he's 6'5" and a hundred and nothing lbs.

Joe is a top 50 player and will start from day one. Moss can move to the 3 or go to the bench but Joe will start from day one, take it to the bank.

Is Joe really that skinny? I've heard he would start this year if he could skip his senior year of high school. He is probably closer to a top 25 kid than a top 60. He committed to Iowa way too early to maintain his true ranking.

He started at the 3 last year while Jok was on the Award list for best 2 guard in the country.

He played the 3 some last season, sure. But Baer is a 3 and Nunge is a 3/4. Maybe Joe plays the 3. but you're on record as saying Joe is going to beat out Moss next season and move him to the bench. its on the internet so a) it must be true and b) it won't ever go away.

Moss would have to have a Marble type improvement from last year to next year to be better than freshmen Weiscamp. It's possible, but I'm on record that Joe starts over Moss by conference play next year.

I concur. Weiskamp is an elite level player.

A couple of things here in my humble opinion.

Joe will be one of the top 5/6 players on the team next year, so there would be absolutely no reason to redshirt him.

Whether he starts or comes off the bench isn’t the biggest thing in the world, and Moss is more than capable of playing the 3.

Did you guys know that Sam Dekker came off the bench for UW his Freshman year? He was a top 20 player, and that was not the best Wisconsin team there’s been in recent years.

I don’t think it is unimaginable for Fran to bring Joe off the bench his freshman year. You’d in essence be starting him over Baer (5th year on campus), or Moss (4th year on campus). Nunge also could be a factor.

could be. I'm just saying that he isn't likely to beat out a RS JR in Moss. So, do with Joe what he did with Moss and Jok. keep the pipeline going.

Jok didn't redshirt. Moss only took a redshirt year because he spent the previous summer getting his scholastics in order. Weiskamp will not redshirt. You don't redshirt the highest ranked player you've ever recruited, at Iowa anyway.

Weiskamp is definitely not redshirting. His game is much further along at this point in his high school career than Moss' was.

I don't think it's unimaginable either. I would just lean towards Joe winning the spot.

F come in and take starting spots from multiple years starters all the time. It happens even at blue blood programs that have elite talent in that spot already. I’d be shocked if Joe W doesn’t start from day 1.

I am assuming that when you say “You” you are referring to Fran. I believe Glenn Worley was higher ranked than Joe. Possibly Ricky Davis also. I agree with your premise though. I just can’t see Joe redshirting.

I wonder who the couple of guys that won't play much this year are.

Personally, I think Uhl and Wagner will have a hard time getting minutes this season, and, as the season goes along, Pemsl likely will see his minutes go down as well as he will be competing for time with Kreiner at the back-up 4/5 positions. I have a feeling that Kreiner, who has a more diverse skill set, will gradually move ahead of him.

As for Wieskamp, I don't see him redshirting. My gut feeling is that he and Patrick will split time primarily at the three, but, if Moss doesn't elevate his game, I could see Wieskamp starting at the two. I'm not as high on Moss as some. IMO, he's definitely vulnerable to losing his starting spot.

Agree with this. Moss really hasn't done anything to this point to lock him into a starting spot for the future. He played the 3 last year and he can play the 3 next year if he's earned it to make room for Joe in the starting lineup.

Typically I'm the guy who says " no way is he beating out a guy who's been in the system for 3 seasons" guy... but Joe sounds like a once in every 30-50 year type of player. The hypes big. It will be more of a surprise to me if he isn't starting day 1.

I’m not sure why I’m getting into this with you because I suspect it is another troll, but why do you maintain that Moss was the “3” last year? Moss is shorter, faster, and quicker than Jok. He would often match up with the quickest guard on the opposing team. Jok had more strength and would often guard bigger stronger players.

I suspect you are saying this because as you say Jok was up for this “2” guard award. I’m not sure what award that is you are referring to but it really doesn’t matter. Many teams play with a point guard and two off guards. Some teams play with two point guards and an off guard. It doesn’t mean those players can’t be up for an award. Look at when UConn won the championship with Napier and Boatwright, two PGs. I’m sure they both could have been on the Bob Cousy list (not sure if they were or not).

It really doesn’t matter though, the two positions can be pretty interchangeable in Fran’s system. Imo JW would be the 3 and Moss would be the 2 if they were on the floor at the same time as JW is a little taller and longer and appears to enjoy mixing it up inside a little more, while Moss is faster and quicker.

The question I posed was rhetorical, so don't expect a response to whatever one sentence drivel you respond with.

Look at the box score from the game the other night. It is just not possible to get that many guys minutes. Moss was out with an injury and Baer barely played and Fran still had a tough time getting guys minutes.

I hope it won’t cost us a winnable game early in the season. It’s going to be a tough decision (likely benching a senior), but that’s why they pay Fran the big bucks.

They only way he would be able to get all those guys minutes is if he played the "Grinnel system" which is taking a shot (usually a 3 pointer) on offense in the first 8 seconds and rotating players virtually every 1-2 minutes.
