Fran has his stuff together

I got hosed out of the first 25 minutes or so of the press conference (stupid meetings at work), but was able to hear enough to be impressed with McCaffery's demeanor and philosophy towards coaching and recruiting. Also pleased that he is apparently willing to embrace the former players in the program, and potentially have one on his staff.

I am very excited about the Hawks future! This guy reminds me of a basketball version of Kirk Ferentz. He seems very genuine and happy to be Hawkeye! Can't wait for bball season!

I never really thought of Lick as cocky. Alford, definitely, but Lick seemed neither cocky nor confident.
Of course Alford, well i suppose Lick was more arrogant than cocky but idk something about his vibe was cocky, maybe because he thought he had the full 7 years to turn things around and didnt change a thing until the michigan tourny game.

I thought he did a great job. Much better than Lick's first presser which can be described best in one word...awkward.

It will be very interesting to see what happens with the roster and assistant coaches. He obviously takes nothing for granted.

This has shades of the Nebraska football debacle that was Bill Callahan. He just never embraced what was Iowa basketball, and either did Bill. Then hire Pelini and the first thing he says is I want the former players here and I want them to have input on our job here. Smart man Fran is. He needs to get out and connect with the students!!!!!!!!!!

@yoda: You must unlearn what you have learned.

Yoda: I am wondering, why are you here?
Luke: I'm looking for someone.
Yoda: Looking? Found someone, you have, I would say, hmmm?
Luke: Right...
Yoda: Help you I can. Yes, mmmm.
Luke: I don't think so. I'm looking for a great warrior.
Yoda: Ohhh. Great warrior.
[laughs and shakes his head]
Yoda: Wars not make one great.

Luke: All right, I'll give it a try.
Yoda: No. Try not. Do... or do not. There is no try.

Bingo. Awkward pretty much sums up Lick's 3 years with the program. Coach 'Caff' gives me the impression he is going to grab the program by the tail and really get after it.

Did anyone pick up on the comment that coach made about his boys being able to play a bit and that maybe Iowa would get a visit from them?

Was this an inadvertant crack at Lick and Lil Lick or am I reading to much into this?

I thought it was funny either way.

I thought it was funny as well, i doubt it was a shot a lick, the new coach seems very respectful. I think he probably threw it out thinking a reporter would eventually ask if his boys played hoops.

I definitely didn't get the feel that it was any kind of shot at Lick. I think maybe he was a tiny bit nervous? I mean that's understandable. He threw out a couple jokes regarding both his kids and his wife, and that really seemed to help the overall atmosphere in the room.

Might also have been a way to prepare people for the chance that his boys might be ND bound. Anybody ask what school the kids will be attending? Pretty confident Regina will have an upswing in the basketball success. West and City are probably gripping right now.

His boys are 9,7 and 1 year old....if he survives til they are recruits, that will be a helluva run.
They do have tremendous bb genes tho...would be surprised if they are not good bb players.

As for a shot at lick...no way.
Did Licks wife even attend his PC? Cannot remember.
But, I have to say, while I could not care less about spouses of the coaches, Lick really managed to keep her out of the limelight completely... I do not believe I ever saw a single photo of licks wife...or see her at a game...kind of remarkable in a small community like Iowa City...I think Mary Ferentz has handled it well, she is not a celeb-wife, but not hidden away either. Seems like Margaret McCaffrey will be more like that...good. Remember that Mary Ferentz's famous Sunday breakfasts are a big part of the closing pitch with recruits for KF....sounds like Mrs. Fran can handle that part quite well.
