Fran gets 1 more year

We played through all of March last year. Idiot.

Yes, in the Nobody's Interested Tournament.

I get the OP's disappointment; I thought this team under performed a little this year and didn't take any real strides forward. Yes they kind of made the tournament but I'm not sure this years team was any better than last years. Somewhat disappointing but I'm not ready to give Fran the boot yet and think any kind of discussion along that line is premature and a bit ridiculous. He's brought the team back off life support and made it competitive; why don't we wait and see if he can get it to yet another level?

What's there to be upset about? It's Iowa basketball. Get over it! Except for maybe a couple of seasons, this is what Iowa basketball has been for over thirty years. No hope of seriously challenging for the regular season championship or making a deep run in the tournament. It's been this way for almost two generations.

For the overwhelming majority of the last thirty plus years, Iowa has been nothing more than a middle of the pack or worse Big Ten team. Unless you are in your late forties or older, this is what Iowa basket always has been

There is nothing Fran coulda done. It wasn't an X&O problem. It was deep deep locker room issues that woulda derailed any team. Graduation is gonna cure some of those problems.

Next year will be better.
Where are you getting this info? If you don't mind me asking? I'd like to hear exactly what you know. Or think you know.

All things considered? No, all things considered this year's senior class was recruited by Lickliter in the darkest of dark eras of Iowa basketball. Fran is moving toward the right track, but he ain't there yet. This team was close and had he closed on Paige and been able to keep Brust, things would have turned out a lot differently. But given the tire fire he inherited, meh, whatevs. We just don't have a legit baller who you can go to late in games and no amount of X and O work can overcome that fact.
He never had a chance with Paige. As soon as Carolina offered, it was a done deal.

A power forward with a strong upper body and a point guard that can actually score/handle the ball will turn this team into something.

This season was disappointing but come on. Marble was an overachiever. McCabe and Basabe were similar recruits. The heart of this team is in Woody, Jok and Gesell. They need a power forward with strength and a real ball handler, a true point guard

Just need playmakers folks. We have enough sleepy heads on the court, who wants to be the go to guy...the slasher with ice in the veins?

yes, he should definitely be fired if he doesn't make the sweet sixteen!!!!

arrrrrgggggghhhhhh!

I don't think that at all but he I think 4 years is enough to meet my expectations which were originally to make the tourney.

Fairly or not, I wasn't clear in my expectations because by that I meant competing on the round of 64 which he hasn't done.

He's done some good things and brought excitement back to the program but so did Paul Rhoads to the cyclone football... Does that make him a good coach??

We won't know until Pawl goes to an SEC school and wins it all. ;-)

For me to keep my faith in him. Only thing Ive been "MAD" about again is having to watch ISU every March the last 3 years while the Hawks are sitting at home. Don't get me wrong, I understand the hardships he's going through right now but it sickens me to see stupid "congrats" to ISU threads on this board when the Hawks should be playing on CBS now but Fran couldn't focus his team for the last month. Look where Fred has ISU in the same amount of time Fran has been here. I can only hope that Barta gives him the boot if 1.) We don't finish in the top 4 of the B1G 2.) If we don't get to atleast the Sweet 16 next year 3.) If we go 0-2 against MSU and Wisky again. For me Fran is on his full count, he better get a hit or he's out. - Sincerely P'Od Hawkeye fan . PS If you want to give praise to the Clowns the site is www.cyclonefanatic.com

I thought you meant that Fran got a 1 year extension? Everything else you mention is poor taste.

My expectation/prediction for next year is an NIT bid. And if that is where we are in year 5, that's unacceptable. That shouldn't be acceptable to anyone. I hope Fran surprises me. I really do.

I have no idea if there was some kind of personal crap going on but there was certainly things the coach could have attempted to change.

X & O was clearly part of the problem. Teams adjusted to stop Iowas transition and Fran did not counter by getting White out of the 3 spot when teams made us play half court game.

Look at the teams left in the tourney, they don't look like Iowa on offense. They move the ball around the perimeter via the pass rather than dribble, they get the ball in the post consistently. Iowas half court scheme is really lacking.

This I agree with... I simply don't believe that by losing our best player, we are magically going to be better because we will have worse players taking more shots.

The wild card is Dickerson and any other talent we can bring in that's not on the roster. If we are better it's because he is a huge upgrade at point and can set other guys up.

Marble was first team all big ten,..poor Fran. Basabe was his recruit, who he didn't play enough, and there was absolutely no reason to ever play McCabe given the multitude of other options but Fran choose to force that issue against all common sense.

He made his own bed. He didn't know how to choose which players not to play or where to play them at.

I'm as disappointed in how this season unfolded as the next guy, but I don't hang a lot of the blame on the head coach. I don't normally call out players, but I feel at least three of our starters underperformed significantly down the stretch. No idea why and probably never will know, but I sincerely hope it wasn't something as trivial as taking twitter away from them. What I do know is that a team that seemed poised to make some loud noise on the national scale this year, folded meekly when the chips were down.

Because we were playing a scheme that didn't work with players in the wrong spots. You can't just dribble around the perimeter and then shoot. The ball has to go down on the block and it never did and there was no spacing to allow it because Fran played a guy at the 3 spot who didn't need to be guarded.

So, how do you feel about Frans coaching ability?
