Former Iowa sports information director George Wine dies | TheGazette

Sad to hear. From article:

I just got off the phone with Hayden Fry. The subject I addressed with the former Iowa football coach was his first sports information director at the UI and the writer of his 1999 book “Hayden Fry: A High Porch Picnic.â€￾

That was George Wine, who died Thursday morning at 81. Wine was the SID during a transformation of Hawkeye sports in visibility and popularity. I’ll post a detailed obituary about him here later today.

“It’s so sad,â€￾ Fry said. “He was a wonderful person. He was a big help in me turning the program around. George stayed so positive in the days of us turning the program around. Every time George and I got together he would relate things that would help from a psychological standpoint in dealing with the fans and the news media.

“I loved the guy. Even after retirement, we stayed real close. He got the book going. He did all the research, called all the schools where I had coached. He was great at gathering all the stories and the facts.â€￾

Lighten up on Duff, guys. He made a joke and you didn't like it. Life's a b!tch some days.

my bad guys. this was the third post of the day with the exact same title. i thought the guy kept comming back to life add dying again like in some sort of medical miricle or maybe a zombie thing.

:D

I don't think Duff was being at all disrespectful just commenting on the fact that people begin new threads with the exact same title because they are too lazy to scroll down half a page to see if it's already been posted.

I made the initial post this morning and now there are 4 other posts. I tried to delete mine but apparently you can't delete posts.

Anyway, prayers go out to the Wine family. Here is Ron Maly's blog this morning on George's passing (Ron was good friends w/George and George wrote often in Maly's blog)
