Former Hawkeye basketball player arrested for OWI

The problem with drunk driving is the person who is being extra careful and gets pulled over for having a head light out and blows a .08 is considered the same criminal as someone who gets pulled over doing 100 and blows a .25. One is a huge danger to everyone around him and the other is a better driver then 90% of the people on the road including himself when he's not drinking. They really need to have graduated penalties depending on what you blow.

You're saying a person at .08 is a better driver than himself sober? So drinking a little enhances your driving ability?

I think he is trying to compare a person at .08 is a safer driver than that person texting/driving or weaving in and out of lanes at 80mph.

You're probably right, that may be what he meant that but that's not what he wrote. The way it reads is an .08 person who decides to drive "extra careful" compared to "normal sober" is a better driver.

In telling ya, take the precious car away with a DUI and numbers go down big time. Cars are more precious than our own kids in our society.

True. Not trying to go Pol/Con here, but you know which crowd would scream "you're picking on the poor and minorities."

I'm a little surprised that the gov't has not mandated that BAC monitors be incorporated into ignition systems on new cars. Probably something that auto makers and the ACLU would lobby against.

Meant pretty much what you just said. Keep in mind I'm not talking about the people who get a few beers in them and start driving like a manic or the rare person who always pays attention and drives as safe as possible all the time. I'm talking about the majority of people who get destracted by the radio or their phone or whatever else in every day driving vs the person who doesn't take his eyes off the road and obeys all traffic laws to a tee because they had a few beers.

Why is this even news?

Like it or not, current and former Hawks in the area are gonna get featured in the news when they screw up.. Comes with the territory. They get all the press and accolades when they score touchdowns and make 3 pointers. Nobody wines about that. He screwed up and drove drunk. He is lucky he did not kill himself or others.
Throw the book at him.

Did you know at the time it was drunk driving? I personally don't drive drunk, but I would rather encounter me at .12 BAC on the road than the following people:

- Facebooking soccer mom trying to handle large Starbucks and 3 pieces of crotchfruit in backseat of Toyota Land Cruiser
- Methed out trucker who hasn't slept in 4 days
- Texting teen gal
- Makeup fixing gal on the freeway
- Gal who didn't learn what blindspots are
- Doosh who goes 90 in lane that is ending and tries to pass every car possible
- Rush Limbaugh after getting into his pills

You are right..Lots of poor drivers out there but rationalizing drunk driving is just plain stupid.

Not if .08 was the same penalty as it is now and it only gets worse from there. It might actually encourage people who are planning on drinking and driving anyway to drink less then they otherwise would to avoid the stiffer penalties.[/QUOT

So people PLAN on drinking and then driving?? Seems to me the penalty for those people should be worse. Pre-meditated drunk driving.
