Forbes - Iowa can afford to.....

I can't hardly believe I'm saying this but I'm in your camp. 5 years or so ago I'd have said hell no Bielema. Now I think he'd be more then a shot in the arm for the whole program. I think he'd like to be here for one. I doubt he fits in too well down there and that division/conference he's in is brutal. What's his ceiling there really? I like how when he's got the better team he beats you down. I'm sick of when Iowa wins it's 21 to 17. Or 17 to 13 against teams they should be destroying. I'm just sick of Ferentzs teams not reaching their potential lately. I think the system and style isn't working anymore. The other coaches know how to stop what we try to do. It doesn't matter so much how good your players are if your predictable. That's how upsets happen when crazy turnovers aren't factors. If ISU can bottle up our running game and hold us to 3 points in the 2nd half at home that's inexcusable.... And would not happen under Beliema.

It is just too bad he is such a tool. Not lane kiffn/brian kelly bad guy tool but more of a guy you don't want to sit next to anywhere because he is loud and obnoxious type tool.

Ferentz apologist. I called you out after that typical eastern Iowa crap show your favorite coach put on Saturday. I think you mean "Chip Kelly"

Hey look its the guy who disappeared for a whole year. Still struggling with life huh.

And you still are as clueless about football as always. Brian kelly is a guy who kills people and permits rape....bad guy. Chip is a football madman who is in nfl.
Of course me putting three coherent thoughts in one post will baffle you.

Why would they fire him before season's end?

LG, not saying they would. But the sentiment on this board seems to be, "He needs to go NOW!"

If we won out and went 11-1 (I know, I know, no need to throw reality back at me :) ), I think there is still a hard-core group that would want him gone. They'd say the schedule was easy, still lost to a not-a-powerhouse-ISU, we'll probably lose our bowl game, etc. etc.

What we saw last Saturday was depressing. I am still dumbfounded. But I am also shocked by the level of "hate" I am reading.

I didn't make any serious/concrete "predictions" in those threads because I really had no idea what to expect. Losing our 3 starting LBs, losing Van Sloten, etc.

And as much as we hear about how talented our WRs are, it still meant a new set of guys for JR.

I dont think the 30 mill is a good number either. It notes that the previous years were 14 mill. 30 mill seems to be an anomaly.

The game sucked. The offense sucked. However it will take more for ferentz to be cut loose than this picture we have seen this year. I am not saying that is good or bad just the truth. I really have a hard time believing davis can survive but I didn't think he would 2012 either.

I agree, I thought 2012 was pretty much a good indication that our OC and HC philosophies were not a good fit.

To KFs credit, he has not thrown GD under the bus, at least in today's press notes. There are a lot of coaches out there who would happily do so, including firing the guy.

KF sees beyond the "symptom", I think, like it or not.

Whoever continues to believe this perpetuates a disrespect and disservice to Iowa football. It's such a myopic speculation that disregards the condition of and resources available to the Iowa football program. Not to mention, it's just a flat-out false comparison.

Only bad fans with little pride in their football team would buy into such a fallacy that promotes clinging to known futility and underachieving mediocrity rather than striving for performance commensurate with capability.

Do you know how many BAD coaches we had after Evy left the sidelines? It's VERY possible we make a REALLY bad hire, no matter who the AD is.

That's not necessarily a reason to keep KF if we continue to look like we did last Saturday. But to assume Iowa is a big draw is not realistic.

Short of murdering someone, Ferentz isn't going to get canned in-season, and I seriously doubt he'd be fired at the end of this season. Financially it may be entirely possible, but that's only part of the equation. Given his body of work, contract, and current AD, I think the most people can hope for is one of those drawn-out situations where he's asked to make changes at the end of the year. My guess is that he'd refuse, but who knows? It's equally possible that Greg Davis "retires" at the end of this season and nobody ever knows more about it than that. It's also possible he makes some changes now and win 8-9 games this year which would still disappoint some but keep him above the fray.

I think his leash is still long and that the right number of wins and improvement would keep him out of trouble for another year, even if the season is regarded as disappointing by those who saw 10 plus wins on this schedule.

It's nice that Iowa keeps its coaches so long in today's game, but doing so makes it very difficult to get rid of those coaches on the wrong side of their prime. It's not like Fry went out on top. To me, it's a better situation than going through coaching changes every 4-5 years, even though that is highly possible after Ferentz leaves.

There is lies the rub.Do we stay with KF brand of bland football that wins enough games to make a bowl .Loses to teams it has no business losing to and upsets teams sometimes. I guess as long as season attendance is high and donations keep pouring in.We stay with the safe comfy worn out blanket.

Unless Barta has major ties to donors, the first sign of change will be AD replacement. If that happens, the table is set for the next move. With the performance of the overall athletic program compared to others in the BIG, Barta's value needs to be looked at. I doubt he hires the next FB or BB coach.

The thing that is hard to stomach is watching a new coach during 1st year or two and wondering if he'll get the program to take flight. There were people howling to Fire KF in year 1 and 2 if I recall correctly. Then things started to turn in 2000.

JD - I'm all for making a move if this year is a less than 8 win season. BUT, do you really trust GarBar to make this hire? This will be an EXTREMELY important hire and we saw what he did when Alfraud left town and the jury is still out on Fran. I think, if anything, GarBar has to go at the end of the season, and let the new guy bring in his man.

And for those that think the big money still loves KF - their patience is wearing thin.

Jury isn't out on Fran as far as I'm concerned - he's a gamer.

I don't recall that people were howling to fire KF, but I do recall that people were howling at the Crackhawk design to replace the Tigerhawk.

1999 was a sunk year. In 2000, we were slowly seeing improvements and hearing reports of good practices.

By this logic Oregon isn't a big draw because it only has 8-10 years of real success. You assume we would fall back to the Lauterbur years. Hayden Fry put a basement in how bad we can suck.

It's pretty amazing that Forbes is now piling on, too

This snippet is amazing:

“…especially considering the fact that Iowa has quietly built one of the wealthiest athletic departments in the country.
According to data reported to the Department of Education last year, Iowa ranks No. 11 in athletic revenue among all college programs. What’s more, its $30 million in profits are second only to Alabama ($34 million), topping even Texas ($27 million) and Notre Dame ($20 million). Those earnings are a bit of an anomaly for Iowa, but it also reported profits over $14 million in two of the previous three years. Even if things fall back to that level, the school’s athletic department would be looking at giving up around 25% of its annual earnings to afford the cost of firing Ferentz.

In other words, it would sting, especially in that first year, but Iowa appears able to afford firing Ferentz if it’s finally ready to start rebuilding its program. And considering that Iowa football has experienced consistent revenue growth (up about 10% annually over the last five years), has an increasingly valuable conference home and is currently among some struggling competition, there may not be a better time for a fresh start."

Wow

I know, it's nice having some real investigative journalism in the game, huh? Just think if the local press took their jobs this seriously. It would make your's a lot easier.

Don't take a chance because you might fail. The athletic department and kirk supporters seem to have the same philosophy as Kirk himself.
