Ferentz has won 8 or more games 5 times in 14 years. 6-7 wins is his norm. That's not ok. Maybe 40 years ago, but not now. Iowa isn't that kind of program anymore, or at least it wasn't. Clearly, it's starting to drift back in that direction.
I don't worry about '99 and '00 so let's talk about Ferentz once the program "was on its feet" so to speak.
w/yr and 4.5 L/yr since 2001. Also, we need more perspective about Fry. Here is his record by season-
Iowa 5–6 4–4 5th
Iowa 4–7 4–4 4th
Iowa 8–4 6–2 T–1st L Rose
Iowa 8–4 6–2 3rd W Peach
Iowa 9–3 7–2 3rd L Gator
Iowa 8–4–1 5–3–1 T–4th W Freedom
Iowa 10–2 7–1 1st L Rose
Iowa 9–3 5–3 T–3rd W Holiday
Iowa 10–3 6–2 T–2nd W Holiday
Iowa 6–4–3 4–1–3 T–3rd
Iowa 5–6 3–5 T–6th
Iowa 8–4 6–2 T–1st L Rose
Iowa 10–1–1 7–1 2nd T Holiday
Iowa 5–7 4–4 5th
Iowa 6–6 3–5 8th L Alamo
Iowa 5–5–1 3–4–1 7th
Iowa 8–4 4–4 6th W Sun
Iowa 9–3 6–2 T–3rd W Alamo
Iowa 7–5 4–4 T–6th L Sun
Iowa 3–8 2–6 T–7th
So, his first 2 years were bad and then he got it rolling. However, similar to 2006 and 2007 Fry had a hiccup in '88 and '89 and then just so we are all aware, after 14 years Hayden had a big drop off of 3 years in a row going 5-7, 6-6, 5-5-1. The last thing I here thrown around is that Hayden won 3 big ten titles. He won 1 outright and tied for 2 others. Overall, these 2 coaches have had basically teh same amount of success. Fry, however, lost many more bowl games over his career than has Ferentz. We have to keep perspective. And lastly, just so I don't get accused of apologizing for Ferentz, I think Ferentz has gotten very stale- as did Fry- and I think aggressiveness over the last 3 years has been the issue. The hawks were more agressive early in Ferentz's tenure and the lack of that recently is why the bullies of the big ten have become weak. That is all.
