For perspective: Alabama’s six poor seasons in the last 15

.613 vs. .571.

Good thread. Perspective. Everyone is trying owing and it is very very hard to do so year in and year out. There are countless examples of highly successful programs that have bad years.

It was ok even 20 years ago. Ferentz has 100 wins in 14 seasons, he averages 7.14 wins per season. Hayden Fry had 143 wins in 20 seasons for a 7.15 average per season. This isn't Alabama or Ohio State and I think some people here have to high of expectations for a team that has to rely on out of state recruiting in order to field a competitive team.

Having said that I am not happy with some of KFs decisions, particularly bringing back Greg Davis and I am not happy with Barta giving him that contract so there is no accountability.

I don't know how many times this has to be brought up. There were 11 games per season during Fry's tenure. 12 during Ferentz's. The addition of the 12th game was an added "cupcake". Fry's per season avg would be 8.15, or close to it, under a 12 game per season schedule. That's a full win more per season than Ferentz, on average, which is alot.

This can only mean that Ferentz will lead Iowa to 3 of the next 4 NCG's, right?

Keep grasping at straws...

Clearly that is what I meant by my post.

Or the fact that there are examples of great coaches (no, I am not putting KF in that category and he clearly doesn't have the record or success that Bear Bryant did) that have had a few crappy years only to turn a program back around and see success again.

Will that happen with KF at Iowa? Who knows, just putting it out there that it has indeed happened and probably will in the future.

Yep. To me the big difference between Ferentz and Fry is denoted by the number of 8s and 9s that appear in their respective eras. Ferentz would need a nice run of solid seasons to have a similar number of 8+ win seasons after twenty years.

Also, for those seeking remote examples for FreedComanche, Hayden was 3-8 in his 20th season. I know he had a lot going on off the field, but 3-8 is 3-8.

Bear Bryant's 12th and 13th years

1969- 6-5 overall 2-4 conference 8th
1970- 6-5-1 overall 3-4 conference T- 7th

Yes, I knew that all programs have down years. However if you have a 3-9 season like the old ucla coach had at year 15 of his reign, or this year with ferentz in his 14th season, it's much different than finishing one game over 500.

Face it, if ferentz would have had 7-5 record this year, there would not be the uproar there is now. People would still complain, but I doubt folks would be calling for him to be fired.

Yes, this has been mentioned before. This was his last year. The big difference is everybody knew he was close to retiring and this was used against him in recruiting for at least 3-4 years before he retired. Hence, he didn't get good players for those years. ferentz does not have that for an excuse because, if I remember right, Hayden was in his late 60s during that time frame.

Compare apples to apples. I doubt Hayden had a 4 win record in his 14th year.
