Fleck Impresses Me

I watched a long interview he gave to the Gopher press corps prior to the Iowa game. Sorry guys, this is a very impressive young man. He was very complimentary of the Iowa system, and particularly complimentary of Fry and Ferentz. He said that he is trying to build Minnesota into the Iowa model. He said that Iowa has an identity year after year, and right now Minnesota does not. He said that Iowa is a family, and right now Minnesota is not. He is extremely articulate. He has a plan. Does he have a big ego? Of course he does, but that is something that all successful coaches must have. Some just hide it better than others.

I don't know if he will be successful at Minnesota or not. The fans up there are not patient (Iowa fans, by and large, are very patient). If the Minnesota fans give him 5 years, I predict that he will do just fine.

I'm getting tired of hearing every damn new Big 10 coach wanting to come in and do what Iowa's doing! What the hell even is that anymore? No wonder Ohio State has no one to compete for the BiG title most years because all the coaches in the Big are chasing mediocrity!

Fleck does not impress me. He's all flash, no substance. He can "row the boat" all he wants and come up with all the stupid catch phrases and ugly alt helmets he likes.

He still ain't done spit to impress me. Now GET OFF MY LAWN!!!

After second thought I guess this is why the teams we play look ugly too and are for the most part always close.

Yeah...I was buying too...right up until the end when he tried to sell me a 1969 Ford Pinto with the exploding gas tank. He's sell all the time...you can't fall for his drivel. He's got no intention to stay in Minnesota (who would)...it's just a stop on his publicity train. I agree, he's got a talent...and surrounds himself with good coaches...but the talent is more self promotion and cheerleader than anything else.

I'm not sure he has so much ego, as he has energy and enthusiasm. I don't think he has time to be self absorbed.

If he turns the MN program around in three years he won't be there in four years. If it takes five years he won't be there in six. That dude has bigger fish to fry. He wants a national championship and it isn't gonna happen at Minnesota. Big championship maybe. That will give him all he needs to get that top job he craves.

I will agree he is a decent coach and it won't take him long to figure KF out and that pig will be residing in Minnesota.

I like him on his show as well. Everything you stated. He is passionate. Is that really a crime?

Yea, he boat stuff is cheesy, though. Gotta go.

Keep in mind he's only 7 games into it. He hasn't even had two recruiting classes go thru yet. What he did at Western Michigan is impressive as they were a door mat for years.

in a similar vane, i'm tired of them doing it better. See MSU.

Would you like him if he came into the Iowa football offices, took all the memorabilia from past teams and players including pictures and awards and threw it in the trash, Didn't tell anybody just deep sixed all of it. Told everybody he was going to start a new identity at Iowa. Just forget all that Hawkeye tradition from the past I will tell you what we want on the walls of this joint.

He did that up in Gopfer land.

Do you understand that, cheesy though it may be, the row-the-boat- deal was a part of his grieving process after losing his son? I can't rag on a guy who has gone through something like that.

No he didn't. That story gets blown up & stuff added to every time. He gets chastized for decorating his office with a variety of sports memorabilia from all over the sports world, very little gopher decor. Its his office and he can do whatever he wants. The new TCF Stadium has a an entire wing dedicated to Gopher FB history. Their new practice facility and performance center (similar to Iowa's new facility) is almost complete and will have plenty of homage to old but setting up for the future.
