Five Hawkeyes Ready to Take Next Step in 2018

Any dark horses, you're willing to speak about Rob? I know Young and IKM got most of the carries behind Wadley and Butler, but I'm curious to see Kyshaun Bryan. Without much experience coming back at this position, it would seem the door is open for anyone to get snaps. He had big time offers from just about every "who's who" in college football. His HS film is impressive.

What about at WR - We know, ISM, Easley, and Smith will factor into rotation. Anyone else? There's been talk off and on about Marchese and Cooper. Who fills the void from Vandenburg?

Who else fills in the safety position? Hooker is a gamer we know. I would imagine Snyder won't rush it back after making that mistake the first time. Is Stone that guy? Gervase?

Years ago, there was always chatter that certain players were emerging during bowl prep. Over the last few years, that seems to have lessened. Or writers have just become wiser about what they're willing to report on.

I wish 2-3 wide receivers were on the list...and wonder why developing wide receivers seems to be a bridge too far for this team...glaring weakness...our WRs are ignored in most game planning against us.

Any upgrade in punting is key. In house progression, grad transfer, recruit I don’t care but need some progression.

It's a long offseason. ;)

I'll write more as we move along. I think we'll get a KF January presser with a new two-deep, which lend some insight.

As for Bryan, he was sidelined with a shoulder injury that required surgery in August. He'll be like a mid-year freshman enrollee this spring. As you said, he'll get a chance if healthy and Henry Geil will factor in when he arrives in June.

WR and S will have to play out in the spring and summer. You mentioned some of the guys in the mix.

Shaun Beyer and Amani Jones were two guys that took steps forward in December.

Hadn't heard that about Bryan. Explains why I heard nothing of him all season.

Thanks Rob! I'll standby for future articles.

Five Hawkeyes who should see their roles increase during the 2018 campaign:

I would take exception with one thing you wrote, Rob. Re Epenesa, if he is as good as everyone is saying, he will get all the reps and the rotation will be at the other end and just on a rare occasion or two on his side. If someone is THAT good, they don’t split time even remotely equally with others who are above average to slightly better than that.

Roth split time when he was at DE. There are other good players at the position. Hesse could play some DT. And, I didn't say the other guys are average. Rotations are good on the DL. I still remember Adrian Clayborn gasping for air at Northwestern in '10.

DLine could be scary good next year if AJ becomes a stud and Nixon is as good as advertised.

I think (hope) Brandon Smith can take the next step.

I think we will all be talking about Anthony Nelson by mid season. That kid is a fantastic athlete and he will be bigger, faster, and stronger for 2018 and just a nightmare to block.
This will be a great, great defensive front for the next 2 or 3 years.

I like your list, and would agree that those are the primary players to watch.

I was going to add Bryan, but had no idea he had surgery. That information must have been kept close to the vest, because I don't ever recall hearing anything about an injury with him.

The other two names I would add would be Golston and Turner. Golston's may find minutes hard to come by, but I wouldn't be shocked to see him surpass Hesse at some point. Hesse is a great leader, but, keeping it real, fairly average DE.

Turner has big-time natural talent. If he learns the defense, he could pair with Hankins to give us another great CB duo.

Freaking Clowney even split time. You don't keep DL in there all game unless you have nothing behind them. Eppy has people behind him.

I would add Alaric Jackson to that list.
I wouldn't be surprised if the OL is Jackson, Render, Daniels, Wirfs, Kallenberger next year with Reynolds and Levi Paulson rotating in. Wirfs is like Scherff. He's good enough to play T, but in the long term his position os G.

Wait what? Wirfs is a G? You've gotta be the first person I've seen think that. He's closer to moving to LT than he is moving to G. I do think Kallenberg has a chance to start tho. Especially if Daniels leaves.

Agree. I don't see Wirfs at guard.

However, I also don't see Kallenberger at guard either. It looks like he's going to be stuck behind two young promising tackles, and he's good enough to see the field. That's unfortunate for him, but a good problem for the coaches to have.

To me, I've always felt that both Paulsens are guards. If Daniels leaves, I wouldn't be surprised to see Render switched over, and one of the Paulsens moved in. The darkhorse is Jenkins. He's an underrated recruit, IMO, and could make noise early. Ideally, I'd like to see Render relegated to a back up at both positions, with better players starting.

In the pros, he's a guard, imo.
