First time at the Big House

My following email to President Coleman pretty much says it all....

President Coleman,

An Iowa party of four (including my two children) recently attended the Iowa @ Michigan football game.

I had been to every other Big-10 away venue except Michigan, up until last Saturday. We had never been to Ann Arbor and quite frankly did not know what to expect.

I saved the best for last.

My list could go on and on, but in a synopsis:
- Helpful helpful and friendly folks (from Patrick our usher in section 37, to the traffic directors to the golf-cart drivers). Everybody!
- Fans were friendly, not the least bit untowards or rude (even offering condolences to us for the lopsided loss)

- Very clean grounds
- Stadium was exceptionally tasteful

I understand athletics is only part of a university experience, but for us with limited contact otherwise, the entire athletic event was highly complimentary to your fine university.

Your athletic director, department, and all of the support personnel deserve a round of applause. It was truly our pleasure to have visited your facilities and institution. It won't be out last visit.

Sincerely,

It's a great venue and tailgating experience. I loved my trip there in 2006, except the result.

Ive been everywhere in the Big 10 and i thought Michigan was boring as hell. The Hawks even won 2 of the 3 times Ive been there.

As I understand it, Evil Obama is going to take the Big House away from the U of Michigan and give it to poor lazy people somewhere.

Edit: this is an inside joke aimed at the OP, my buddy Seff. So zip it, tehjumpy.

You always say that? Don't people get sick of hearing it over and over? Or do you just talk to yourself?

There is a forum for that. Politics goes there. Posts about religion and other similarly hot button topics go there, too. Thanks

I was there on Saturday and met President Coleman at the president's tailgate. My host is a big booster and gave us a good tour. There was zero energy both before and during the game. He explained this before the game as having nothing really to play for since the odds of getting to the BIG championship game were nearly nil, and also that the opponent was awful (he wasn't trying to be insulting). The crowd was chanting for Ohio pretty early on and the student section wasn't even full. In my humble opinion, its a bit more upscale (probably the wrong word) and civil than OSU, PSU and Iowa - but again, it could have been the above plus the fact that we were tailgating with the big boosters and sitting in the club level.

This was my second trip to the Big House, and e first in the press box. Agree with every word for both trips. They know how to do things up there, from the top (Coleman) down. The event staff (ushers, elevator operators, etc.) were all very pleasant, and even offered help when I'd forgotten my press pass and had to go back upstairs, and thereby fell behind the herd and had no clue where to go.

High class place, and not nearly as arrogant as one might expect.

I couldn't believe how nice staff, fans, everyone was...Great trip! UM has an awesome fan base overall. I'll try to remember to be a little more welcoming to opposing fans in Iowa City now. I don't know how many people stopped to say "Good Luck", or "Welcome to Ann Arbor/Big House" etc. Some of the most friendly/courteous fans I have ever been around in college football.

I guess that's what a few years of mediocre football will do for you at a big time program. They're still Mishitigan, but I will take your positive remarks into my personal consideration going forward...that's good to know....

...at least until we go back to being their pwn on a yearly basis, and their fanbase rises from the depths as we slip to becoming irrelevant. Besides, the past few years have given me a more sour taste for several other B1G schools and their fans (for now).

I'm sure the fans wouldn't have been as nice if Michigan wasn't wiping the floor with the hawks with 2 minutes left in the first quarter.

I had the exact same experience two years ago when Iowa was wiping the floor with Michigan. I think that's pretty much how they are up there.

I was there in 2010 when Iowa won, and wiped the floor with them pretty good at times during the game (Michigan rallied toward the end if you remember).

The fans were great. Some random Michigan fans invited us to tailgate with them just because they wanted to know more about Iowa Football. We did so for over an hour after the game.
Had a great time, and would definitely consider another trip up. However, I think we will wait until Iowa actually has a chance at winning.

I've been up there in the past, when they were very good, and had the same experience. I actually think it is the opposite of what you think. They are the winningest program in history, and they don't get too worked up about Iowa (even though the seniors for Michigan surely wanted it).

I think we're in for many years of cordial *** whoopings in Ann Arbor. Just like the old days.

UM is recruiting at a very high level. They're going to improve over the next couple of years.

Makes me think are fans are all a bunch of jag bags the way we act on game day after reading this. We act like we are all having our first beer. Should be our above for HN grammar po po's.

I was in Ann Arbor in 04 after Iowa had beat Michigan 2 years straight. Iowa had a good team, so there was a threat of Michigan losing. Michigan fans werent the angels people are making them out to be in this thread, but carry on..............
