Fire Greg Davis.

He's using the same horizontal passing attack that he did when the had NFL caliber QB's and WR's like Jordan Shipley.

Iowa has neither yet they still are running a offensive attack that requires accurate passes and yards after catch.
I cannot disagree with this at all...Iowa's always been more vertical and they're not athletic enough to count on YAC dependent plays.

That is my problem with Davis. People say Ferentz controls the offense but things have changed this year, and not for the better.

Vandenberg is a drop back passer who had throws a nice deep ball. He probably throws one of the best fade balls in the Big Ten yet this offense relies on short passes which require WR's to make a play after catch. Iowa has a bunch of possession style WR's that start, and then Jordan Cotton who can fly. T Smith is fast as well and he rarely is in, but he wasn't redshirted. It's clear that even with those two this offense won't work here.

We may not have to worry about it...isn't Davis on a 1 year deal? I'm sure Kirk won't fire him after 1 year, but maybe he won't stick around and leave on his own terms?

I think KF will get rid of GD at the end of the year. BF will be OC, as KF sees his iron lock on the program slipping a bit and needs to quicken his plans to make the Hawks into a Ferentz dynasty.

We agree.

It may have been his plan all along. Otherwise, why the interim tag?

Not sure about his contract but if it is a 1 year I hope he's not brought back.

I don't ever want to see this style of offense ever again at Iowa.

But why bring in someone who runs a style that doesn't fit they players? The word was when he was hired that things would play to the strengths of the players but that hasn't happened.

I know Ferentz and the players have sad the old playbook is gone, but you'd think they'd bring some forms of it back if Davis indeed was just a short term thing. Why install a offense that doesn't fit and makes your QB worse?

I don't know but, if he is to make BF the OC, he likely didn't want him to inherit this year's squad. It's obviously a stretch but he obviously has bigger plans for BF.

it looked better at the end of the game because jNW was in prevent D. the first half was absolutely terrible.

107 passing yards in the first half is absolutely terrible? I would say this is one of the best passing efforts of the year (not that taht's saying a lot)

If this was a 1 year deal with the plan to move Brian Ferentz in, then I'd be tick as hell if I'm James Vandenberg. I fully think this style is what threw him off.

Ferentz threw away any NFL hope that Vandenberg had with this move if this really was the plan. That's why I don't think it was. You don't install a totally new system when you just are planning for a OC to stay for 1 year.

It's odd because this isn't anything like Iowa has run before in terms of the offense. Brian Ferentz has never been a part of this type of offense at Iowa or with New England. It makes no sense to put this into place. Not for the short term, or the long term.

It's not what Iowa can ever run.

I wouldn't say it threw away his hopes...Matt Cassel (sp?) landed a job having never been a starter at USC...but James' decision making is questionable no matter what the offense is and he can't seem to pick up a blitz most of the time.

Cassel had two Heisman Trophy quarterbacks ahead of him when he was at USC. He would have been a star anywhere else.

Vandenberg has done a 180 and doesn't look comfortable in this offense. Even Joey Galloway noticed that today. He's scared, has no confidence, and has regressed about as much as you can.

True...but we saw him on the road last year, when he "looked scared" and "had no confidence" as well! But he has definitely regressed...

The good thing is, Iowa found some things that worked today...the bad thing is, it was Northwestern, not Michigan or Nebraska. Let's not forget, one of NU's TDs was on a 5 yard drive after a blocked punt and the defense looked awful for 90% of the game...I just can't blame it all on GD when everything else can take some of it as well.

Exactly, even from the pocket, JVB will plant the ball 3-5 yards in front of receivers. Also, the timing is really off on a lot of routes unless JVB is zeroed in on some guy who is running the flats directly in front of him.

I don't think I would ever blame the OC for the type of execution seen on the field.

Also, even though I think JVB isn't great, I also know that it isn't his fault that we don't have a solid ground game.

Its also funny that people are still hooked on calling Iowa a "conservative offense". Every team in the country runs the same plays. Some just look a lot better because they are athletic freaks and can execute. It isn't like Davis is bringing in some crazy offense and Iowa doesn't have the right players for the job. Davis did well at Texas with pocket-type passers and an I formation but his unit peaked with a running qb who could create on his own. A solid O-line and fast RB can make the wing formation look exciting and new.

I just see no future with this style of offense. All of Iowa's QB's are pocket passing ones. Even the kid from Texas that committed. You need a mobile QB (not exactly duel thread QB), to run this offense. Penn State's QB was mobile. Then you need the speed WR's that can get open. Smith, Cotton, and Flemming are speed guys, but Cotton is the only guy with a catch out of them. I understand that Flemming redshirted so he can't have any.

Who exactly are they recruiting that will be a speed WR that makes plays? I fear Iowa's recruiting isn't fitting this either.

The offense isn't as conservative as much as it is the way Iowa runs it, is...if that makes sense. Kirk is a ball control guy who doesn't take chances (fakes, going for it on 4th down, etc)...pro-style isn't conservative, the way Iowa uses it, is.
