Final Four - 2019

He's physically gifted but I don't think he's a very high IQ player and he let a 300+ plus white guy drive full court to go right by him for a layup tells you all you need to know about his defense.

Agree, he definitely has stuff to work on. He'll be here at least next season as well, IMO.

I would wait and see how teams adjust to the new Iowa look before packing your bags. Such a change in style would surprise. Team is finally playing to the strengths of most of the players which is not 1/2 court. Wisky and MSU will try and get Iowa into a half court.

Not sure if this thread is serious but it's amazing how schizophrenic fan bases are.. Last week I saw someone say Iowa wouldn't win a game the rest of the year, "how much longer does Fran get" threads, etc. After a couple of W's over a mediocre OSU team and RUTGERS.. Now we're two years away from being in the Final Four.

OK.

The future looks like it could be solid but I'll believe this when it happens.

That's like saying our country is schizophrenic because there are people on the right and people on the left.

Odds are:

Some key player blows out a knee
Some key player transfers or declares early
Some key player flunks out
The team stars hot then has mental problems, or the reverse but:
Iowa plays Duke, Kentucky, or xyz 1 or 2 seed in the 2nd round after getting a piss poor seeding and gets promptly blown out or lose a close game (and that said team goes on to win the NCAAs and Iowa gives them their best game in the tourney).
story of our life!!!

I think this team has the chance to be good enough offensively to compete with anyone. I'm just not sure they can defensively. JB is going to have to improve a lot to stop a top college guard and not get exploited in man defense. It will be interesting to watch this team develop.

JB had a great game. For Iowa to compete offensively with anyone (remember they've scored in the 40s this year), Iowa needs a starting point guard that will penetrate and go to the rim with intent to score. JB has not shown a desire to do that. Iowa will face teams that will dictate a 1/2 court game and that is where it is needed. OSU and Rutgers are not defensive juggernauts that can impose their will on about anyone right now. The announcers at Rutgers on TV, as much as they raved Iowa, said the exact same thing in regards to JBs exhibited skills. A point guard NEEDS to get to the line for 1. easy points and 2. to get the defense in foul trouble.

Moss could be that guy just as easily as Bohannon could.

Absolutely. If/when this run ends and it is apparent that Dancing is out of the question, I would rather see Moss take over for the future. He can do it. He is a little raw to make a run right now.

That's going to get better. They are a bunch of freshman now.

If we can win the next two, I'll go into the Michigan State game thinking of the NCAA again.

If you look around and watch other NCAA teams besides Iowa, there are plenty of Cooks out there. Explosive, athletic, power forwards that can't shoot are plentiful.

I knew Cook was going to be a good one but I think the hype with him was too much. Never a one and done type kid. When you have that frame and athleticism and you're ranked in the 70's it's because you have some limitations

Can't shoot is a bit harsh and a stretch. As a Freshman he hasn't displayed his 15ft range that well, but I can tell you that it's there. Watch his high school highlights again. His stroke doesn't even look bad. He has been forcing things entirely to much after coming back from the injury. Oh ya he also came back to start playing immediately in confrence play. Once Cook settles down a bit and finds a groove in this offense he will be the primary guy on the scouting report. The number 1 thing you can't allow to happen to you is get carved up in the paint. Cook can and will provide this threat for us more so than any hawkeye we have seen since Reggie Evens. Pemsel and Kreiner are nice players and bring some tools to the court for sure, but they are complement pieces to Cook. If you had to draft the Iowa players in order even right now Cook is the lottery draft pick. Yes even over Jok. Jok's durability issues and asthma are really going to hurt his chances of ever being as good as he could be. Cook is still the top pick.

Cook needs to get a better outside shot and play better D before leaving early. I don't see him leaving early but heck I have been wrong before.

Cook has a loooong way to go before he can sniff the NBA... He has the body don't get me wrong. But not the basketball IQ or even some skills. I consider effort a skill and he doesn't show it at the defensive end. How is Baer getting more rebounds/blocks/deflections just about more of everything then Cook? Cook has to be able to have court vision to what's going on and react faster. Baer anticipates rebounds/passes/loose balls. He's not the fastest, quickest or can jump the highest. He anticipates and reacts fast. Cook is pretty slow with his post moves too. He wants to be able to see/feel the defender so that he's sure of where he's at before he makes his move. There for it ends up being a slow deliberate move that allows help defenders to crash down on him a lot. If Cook had 20% of Baers 'game' in him he'd be a one and done player. Or if Baer had Cooks physical attributes either way. ( I never even mentioned shooting. He's clearly got to get better at that too)
