Field House

Bump.

The story runs tomorrow; it's filed, in the system, and ready to go. There's going to be a photo slideshow to go along with the online version. Just as one final teaser (and a chance to puff out my chest just a little bit :D) before the link is posted tomorrow, here is what the DI editor-in-chief had to say about it in an email sent to the entire DI staff:

This is exactly how a project should be done.

The reason this worked is that Tork owned the story. He totally immersed himself in the subject, kept reporting up until the last possible moment, sent it in to coaches and editors early, took feedback seriously, and worked closely with photo and design to make sure the whole presentation worked. Obviously Tork (and the editors and coaches involved!) deserve a huge pat on the back for the hours poured into this, but even more than that, let this be a template for how projects should be done next semester.

You all know I'm a hard-news guy and 99 percent of the time I'll pass on a feature story. However, the depth of reporting on this piece is irresistible. Even though I had next to nothing to do with the project, it's one of the pieces I'm proudest of in my 117 editions of the DI.

You are pathetic. A chance to cover my New York Knickerbockers. You make me sick!!!! If I wasn't on my smarty phone I would read you're article. My fieldhouse memory. Dropping like 8 3's in a Iowa bball camp game with Kyle Galloway as my coach.

Cool story bro! Shoulda asked for my story!

Well done! I still get goosebumps thinking of the win over Georgetown WAY back in the day. Little did I know it would probably be the only time I'd experience a Final 4 run.

My favorite memory of the Field House was sitting in press row while Zabel interviewed my father after a game in 1980. It was pretty cool.

Your first name is Tork? I very very sorry.

Tork Hook was a DBack for IOWA under Hayden. He got his BA and a Masters from IOWA. He's also an Air Force veteran. Not a bad namesake.

Perhaps this young man is related?

Not related, but he's from my hometown. Our dads worked together in the justice department (as probation officers) for years, and shared season tickets back in the '80s. Always been proud of my name; it gave me a little more motivation to succeed in sports. I wanted to do all I could to live up to the name, even though I knew I didn't have the kind of talent he did.

My last game in the fieldhouse was during xmas break and the Hawks played Lewis Loyd and Drake, tremendous game, I loved the field house, man could it get loud!!!!

I'm still reading article, but nice job and great accolades from editor.

I remember seeing a couple of ball games and wrestling meets there. and also playing pick up games there. sat directly behind steel pillar one game, but they always seemed to be in the way.

Nice work, TM. Good read.

Somebody should tell Zabel that "Gentlemen's Club" has a different meaning for the 20-something guys who'll be reading the piece than what it means for 80-something guys from his generation, though. ;)

Haha, my section editor gets a kick out of that quote every time he sees it, for the same reason as you do.

1.Lute "Don't you people know what time it is?" .... that was an awesome night - agree w/ earlier post - healthy Lester - Championship Banner.

2. Listening to Bobby Knight drop F-bombs because balls and frisbees kept coming over the curtain while they were going thru a walk thru.

3. Sitting at very end of bench listening to Jud Heathcote, Sam Vincent, Scott Skiles - intensity and comedy wrapped up together

4. Last game - 3OT v. the goof's - Carver has never sounded like that.

I also enjoyed the gentlemen's club reference. I wish the environment was even more like a gentlmen's club. Attendance would be much better.

Triumph made a fine car that you didn't drive as much as you wore it like a suit. They just don't make them like that anymore. In fact, they don't make them at all.
