Bump.
The story runs tomorrow; it's filed, in the system, and ready to go. There's going to be a photo slideshow to go along with the online version. Just as one final teaser (and a chance to puff out my chest just a little bit
) before the link is posted tomorrow, here is what the DI editor-in-chief had to say about it in an email sent to the entire DI staff:
This is exactly how a project should be done.
The reason this worked is that Tork owned the story. He totally immersed himself in the subject, kept reporting up until the last possible moment, sent it in to coaches and editors early, took feedback seriously, and worked closely with photo and design to make sure the whole presentation worked. Obviously Tork (and the editors and coaches involved!) deserve a huge pat on the back for the hours poured into this, but even more than that, let this be a template for how projects should be done next semester.
You all know I'm a hard-news guy and 99 percent of the time I'll pass on a feature story. However, the depth of reporting on this piece is irresistible. Even though I had next to nothing to do with the project, it's one of the pieces I'm proudest of in my 117 editions of the DI.
