Ferentz versus Fitz

Fitz is a way better coach for a program like NW then Ferentz would be. Our style wouldn't work at NW because our style requires better athletes. Fitz gets just as much or more out of less as Ferentz, but I'm not sure Fitz is as good at beating the upper half of the Big 10.

Ferentz beats Wisconsin, Michigan, and Penn State more than anyone else outside of Ohio State.

Fitzgerald ISN'T as good at beating the top of the Big 10 as KF. How many Big 10 titles does he have?

Congrats NW, you take care of business against Rice & Minnesota then you might get a Pizza Bowl bid.

Then why did you just predict Iowa to lose to Michigan at home? Twice.

Is there any poster on this board who saw the NU-UN-L game and the Iowa-Michigan game today who can honestly say Ferentz is a better game coach than Fitz. We got a nice W and I'm happy, but if the Hawks had the rock with 9 minutes left and a 3 point lead, I think you can book a 3 and out followed by a 4 point loss. Fitz went for it on 4th down because he knew his defense would gag, and they did, but bince he was aggressive and didn't tie down his o-coordinator (like Ferentz does to O'Keefe), he got out of Lincoln with a win.

Not sure who the better coach is overall, but I agree with about everything else you said. I was saying to myself in the 4th quarter that this is where Iowa would probably lose a game like this. Hats off to Fitz today.

How can you put Fitzgerald even in the discussion with Ferentz? Come on, the guy has NEVER won a bowl game. Never. Bowl games are where coaching really shows up as they have 4 weeks or more to prepare for them. There are no excuses as injuries are usually healed, you know what you have, and who your opponent is. Ferentz has won 3 straight including a BCS game. Simply no comparison. How does that School handle the fact that it's been 60 years since they won a Bowl game. Can you imagine Iowa's meltdown? Now that I think about it, they should fire Fitzgerald.

There is no doubt Fitz would not have the mental-lapses on game-day like the Iowa coaches.

He's had enough mental lapses to have his safeties get beat time and time again this year by over the top passes. I believe that is a mental lapse right. Did you see McNutt and Davis all by themselves with no one within 10 yards? That's happened in all their losses...sounds like coaching to me.

This guy has a losing Big Ten record and is 0-3 in Bowl Games. I believe Ferentz is 6-3 with a couple of Big Ten titles. Don't compare them until Fitzy gets some credibility beyond beating Iowa...who broke his leg and he's never forgiven them.

It is much easier to roll the dice as coach of Northwestern than it is coaching Iowa. Northwestern is not expected to win so as a coach you can take chances without much worry of repercussions of not succeeding. If you gamble and win everyone applauds you, if you gamble and lose no one cares.

That might be partially coaching, but how many times has Prater been burnt this season. Those are metal mistakes by the player. I'm saying Fitz would be better at in-game decision making such as having a punt-safe on or calling a timeout in a crucial situation. Also, Fitz can figure-out a way to convert a 4th & 1.

I wonder how many of those ripping on Fitzgerald's bowl record are the same people who defend Ferentz because of Iowa's recruiting disadvantages and (supposed) lack of big-time tradition. Northwestern lost ten games per year for a couple decades (maybe more) and they have the toughest academic standards in the conference.

I'm not a Fitz fan, but some consistency, please. It's a minor miracle that NW regularly wins 6-7 games given their history.

Ferentz is the better coach 6 days per week. I think Fitzgerald is a brilliant game day coach and a very good coach in every other aspect.

Ferentz on the other hand is untouchable overall until it comes to game day. On Saturday he is very human. JMHO.

PF's offense is not innovative.....just hard to defend. That doesn't make him a better coach than Kirk. For a guy who played in college, his defenses are terrible. They were much better in the 90s, so why is it that he can't recruit suitable talent on defense to make them at least average?

Excellent post! The way NW has become competitive in the conference is remarkable. Those of us of a certain age, can certainly remember when the conference cellar was up for grabs between the Hawks and the Cats.

Is that the same reason Stanford sucks year in and year out?
