Ferentz Talks About Criticism

I like Coach Ferentz, he seems like a good persona and a decent coach. Having said that I have been numb and unemotional the last season and a half. Stale play and performance have plaque the team the last 2+ seasons. It doesn't matter what questions get asked of him, he won't budge one way or the other. I just hope the program doesn't turn into Colorado or along the lines of Illinois the last 5-6 years.

We could revisit this thread in a couple of years I guess. Really, if you think about it, the answers he gave, are the only answers he can given his position.

I guess maybe I'm holding on to the thought that he made changes from those responsible when this all started. Which was 2007 and 2008.

I wanted change, and change I got. Now I need to at least give three years to see what recruits are brought in by the new guys.

He is ultimately responsible for the performance of his assistants, but if changes were made because of them (which I have reason to believe they were), I need to wait to see what the results are going to be.

He is answering the questions like an arrogant man that know he does not have to worry about his job. Maybe this is why he has not had a sense of urgency to win.

Rich man who thinks he is better than you or I. $30 mil in the bank makes it that way--his family ethics are reflected in his favorite son, Brian, who stole housing from poor students. I'm guessing the Ferrets didn't pay back the university for that one. The same way he made IA pay his sons' tuition and fees for playing football at his program---look, he is better than you so don't question him.

His answers were exactly the answers I would expect from a man that has a $21M buyout and 8 years remaining on his current deal. They were also spoken like a man who acts as if he has no control over the "ebbs and flows" of a season or a series of seasons. Some guys believe that you make your own "ebbs and flows" and some, like Kirk, think they are automatic so he just keeps on keepin' on as if there's nothing to see or be concerned about because it's simply just a normal "ebb and flow".

Luck favors the prepared Kirk everyone knows that but I guess he figures player development, recruiting and playing winning football is OUTSIDE his control. He must be smoking better weed than I am because he is delusional.

We all know Kaczenski really hurt the program and he'll do it to Nebraska too. Remember they got rolled by 30+ points by Ohio State. I'm willing to give him 2 more seasons so Ruddock or Sokol have 2 years at the helm but if 4-8 and 6-6 is any indication then his ebb and flow comment is EBB without any flow and that just can't be tolerated. I'm in the same camp as Bill King NO ONE deserves a lifetime appointment we shouldn't operate on TENURE. His job is to win football games period!

Maybe, but I'm pretty sure that's not how the U of I's President sees it. Actually, I'm positive. But you are at where I'm at. In 2014 something's gotta give. All the other talk here is way premature, mostly by those who don't understand how the sausage is made at an institution of higher learning.

I'm not clear why some of these comments when some of us have been talking about the 2007-2008 attrition since before last season (I end it at 08, the owner of the board and others extend this to 09, but it really doesn't matter).

He is a CEO. His though process is similar to those that run large businesses. I run a small one. Employees are always the largest headache. He is no different. Also, my answers would have been similar to his in this situation. What else could he possibly say? Notwithstanding some suggestions on here that he clearly can't speak.

It is what it is, and it's always about the next one, not the last one. What have you done for me lately?

Reading that I realized that KF once again musters one up for the Hawkeye faithful.

Q: All assistants are one year guys, as they are employed at your discretion, right?
Ferentz: That is how it is. Most of them know if they do their jobs…instead of talking about it past performance has something to say about it. Do your job. It is what everyone is supposed to do and they are.

There it is folks. That is why Iowa will never see a coaching tree like Hayden had while Kurt is here. The guy with whom we have entrusted the program and shown our loyalty by giving him nearly $4 million/year and a 75% buyout for a decade at a time doesn't trust his own hiring abilities enough to lock up any assistants. And of course we can't pay them the way Paul Chryst was paid by Wisconsin because we're blowing the whole effin budget on Kurt, so we're left with guys who get fired by Texas and the other friends and family of the Ferentz clan. And what is he saying about past performance - is he talking about his past performance of running underperforming coaches out of town or not resting on past performance, because I can think of one guy in IC resting a bit on past performance. And raise your hand if you could severely harm a bunch of 18-22 year old kids and not get fired from your job - Mr. Doyle, I commend you for doing your job.

What an effin' joke. Look, I get we're gonna lose games and have bad years, but at least don't slap the fanbase in the face. Tell us everything is gonna get better, that tomorrow will be better than today, that if we have faith you will take us to the promised land, don't be a jagoff. Take some lessons from Tom Osborne or Barry Alvarez, guys who truly loved their institutions and fanbases.

OK4P, mad as hell and not going to take it anymore. Amen, brother.

Damn, his response to the very first question asked of him got me all ****** off. More wins, I guess!!!!! Does he fricken realize that the people supporting him and his team are reading this?????? Then he turns around and plays dumb like he does not know what is being asked of him, "broad based questions". If he does not have a friggin clue what the reporter was asking about getting to the 2009 level and does not have a plan then add me to the list of fans that want him gone.

Un freeeeeking believable! When he insults the intelligence of the reporter asking the question he is insulting the intelligence of the fans because those questions they are asking are exactly what we want to know.

KF, tell us you have a plan...you do not have to get specific or call people out. But at least identify there is a problem and you have a plan in place to correct it.

If you throw out 2009 (a season that we barely won each and every game; that season could just have easily been a 7 win season) we have not really done anything since 04.

I was squarely in Kirk's camp until this year. Now I am starting to have doubts. His responses to questions always leave me puzzled. He does not have that killer instinct in the answers. Never has. Lombardi, Eveshevski, Woody, Bo...do you think any of these coaches would sound like Kirk in a press conference? I'd much prefer him getting all pizzed at the questions and storm off. At least we'd know he had a pulse.

There is not much we can do about it now. Like golfer said...give him 3 years ( do we have a choice) see what happens.

btw, what the heck is ebb and flow? Is this coach or football jargon that I have never heard of? Perhaps they are the names of his pets.

Personal attacks are not gonna fly. Criticism of Kirk or any coach has been and still is fair game. However, name calling isn't. Comparing someone to a political candidate isn't what we're looking for, either.

If you can't criticize without using personal insults, then HN may not be for you.

Amazing how whatever KF says or does there are still people who say "what else is he supposed to do?" As if there is only one way to respond to a question or handle a certain situation and anyone who says otherwise is just a jamoche. Lovie Smith doesn't say much either, but at least he knows what a professional answer should sound like.

He's always talked like this. It's frustrating when the team isn't good and refreshing to some when they are. Those type of answers are Kirk in a nutshell. I don't really care myself, what a coach says in an interview never means much to me.

He takes the approach of never being too high and never being too low, I understand it and it's not his demeanor that is the reason for the lack of success in my opinion.

These things read a little more harsh than they actually sound..but Iowa doesn't want the audio from the on the side shared, and they don't want it filmed and published.
