Ferentz Spring Presser Transcript

Sokol is a Jr, played both years at Scottsdale CC. Therefore has three years to play two.

Oops, sorry was thinking of Simmons for the eligibility. Still goes about coming in and starting with only a few weeks in the system compared to 5 years.

Point is spot on, new QBs don't start here or most other programs for that matter, and Rudock has the advantage for now for the number two spot. Both are a full lap down to JVB and even if they close the gap they won't catch up.

Wow you Kurt fans got butthurt in a hurry. I was pointing out that it was not said very well. Also yes I am reading it and that is some what misleading.

Tha captain offered up his 4-4 comment. Which is unlike him. Its not like someone said hey Kurt are things going to get better? How do you feel about the last two years? I readed the whole thing folks, and Isa just fine a da readin, me thinks he didnt say it the best way.I am just saying a well placed fart joke is way better than pointing out that your team that a few people had picked for a NC lost to Minnesota and went 4-4.

Anyone else kinda think the coaching staff changes were forced on the offensive side of the ball?

I think that one way or another, KF had to rise to the occasion and find new ways to implement new plays. There was certainly heat. But from that presser alone and as always with KF, you can't simply "read" into it and make a factual determination. Fortunately, it sounds like the new plan is being re-tooled for better than the status quo.

KF seemed a bit more "windy" and candid, more relaxed maybe in his replies. Maybe it is just the off-season, or maybe he is truly less stressed and reinvigorated about moving forward. Then again, maybe he likes his job and has no major negatives to overcome.

Sokol will redshirt, and compete with Jake Ruddock in 2013.

Vandy is the man,and is going to have a big senior season.

KF is doing what fans have been begging for over the last few seasons....starting over from scratch on offense and heavily tweaking our defense. We will see if it is the pancea that some fans seem to think.

"We're 4‑4 the last two years.* If that's the best you can do, there's nothing wrong with that.* We've been here 13 years.*"

Really? Nothing wrong with losing to Minny two years in a row?

Good point. Let's not leave out: " If 4‑4 is the best we can be, that's fine...." And yes another poster pointed out that he said "we want to do better". But, of course everyone WANTS to do better, but the problem with his response was that he said 4-4 is fine, and did not say that he EXPECTS better. In this context, fine means "acceptable". 4-4 is not acceptable. This is EXACTLY the mindset present in the Iowa football program before Hayden, and exactly the frame of mind that he extricated when he got here. Hayden Fry would never, ever say that 4-4 is fine, or "nothing wrong with that". Its the definition of mediocrity, or average. For those of you who became hawkeye fans after Hayden, just a little internet research on Hayden and the changes in psychological perspective he brought to the program and you will find what I'm talking about. Bottom line: KF's statements do not reflect a "winning" attitude.

I still say with the schedule we have for the first five games we should be expected to go 5-0. After that I get a little worried but I think 7 wins should be attainable.

Oh but he DID say he expects better: ;)

If that’s the best you can do, there’s nothing wrong with that. We’ve been here 13 years. There’s not a year we haven’t felt like we left something out there. It’s the nature of coaching I think.

So the bottom line is we want to move forward. If 4‑4 is the best we can be, that’s fine. But we’re shooting for something higher than that certainly, always have been.

I'll agree KF did not articulate what he was saying very clearly. But he is not settling on 4-4. You honestly believe he thinks that?

Under KF, Iowa has only finished under 4-4 in B1G one season in the past 11 years. In other words, we have finished .500 or better in 10 of 11 seasons in B1G. We have finished better than .500 in 6 of past 10 seasons.

I guess the players are able to overcome KF's low expectations and overachieve nearly every season then....jeez

So what you're saying is Hayden knew all about the psycology of extrication? In other words, he was a Master Extricator.

The other thing I take from your post is I need to do a better job of taking what Kirk says at face value. That Kirk, he never was very good at the art of coach speak.

I don't recall anyone saying that the defense will be heavily tweaked.

.

Me either. He is hinting at some major (major for us) new looks in offense though.

I've never really heard him comment like this before.

I guess there is a 50/50 chance he sits at our table at the I Club thing on 4/17. I doubt it, but I sponsored 1/2 the table, and the other business owner seems to think he will. We'll see.

I'm not going to ask him anything, given the chance, but plan to listen to see if he keeps up with these hints (I guess that's what you'd call them anyway).

These things allow for comments not made elsewhere, especially if the press ins't around.
