Ferentz should steal an SEC assistant to be new DC.

First - I didn't say necessarly THE BEST players.
Second - i didn't specifically say ALABAMA & LOUISIANA.

The "south" is a much wider region than just those 2 states, and I'd have to believe there are still plenty of worthwhile recruits to be had in the region without necessarily getting the 5* recruits. Pretty sure Saban & Miles are getting their in-state blue chippers locked up.

Moot point though, because I'm pretty sure KF won't be hiring a DC out of the SEC.

Just mentioned Bama and Louisiana because they are 2 of the states with the most talent.

No, but landing a DC from the SEC would bring someone that coaches like the DCs in the SEC.

I'll take that any day.

I'm sure if KF hired an SEC assistant that he would let him do whatever he wanted on defense, blitz every play, and just get completely away from what KF and Co have done the last 13 years. I guess that Norm was just holding KF's creativity back all these years!

Why do you have a problem with the way Iowa plays defense? It has won us a heck of a lot of football games over the past 13 years.

Can't play pass defense. Isn't athletic.
Isn't a great defense..

Will never stop athletically gifted teams like, for example, tOSU or Oregon. Will not stop advanced offenses like, for example, Northwestern, Houston, or Hawaii. Won't stop most offenses of the SEC.

Finally, Ferentz counts on a great defense, so let's get him one.

EDIT:So I hijacked a little. Sue me.

I live in the south now. Outside of Florida, Georgia, and Texas, it would be hard for the kids that are going to school down here make it at Iowa. Seriously, I fear I am damaging my kids everyday by letting them stay in the hell-for-saken education system, and my kids go to a dramatically over-achieving southern school.

True the SEC has better athletes, but they have crap student-athletes. Best thing for the Big Ten is not to try to mimic the SEC, but to find as many ways possible to distance themselves. The P12 B1G agreement goes in that direction. Now, they need to get the Rose Bowl to drop out of the BCS and reset the agreement.

Having seen austinhawks posts on this thread...

...we are all worse off. Whne someone replies with something that makes sense he responds with something that makes no sense and acts like he has delivered the ultimate zinger back to them.

Just so we are on the same page...are you talking about this past years defense or Iowa's defense as a whole during KF's tenure?

If you are talking about just the 2011 version of the Hawkeye D then I would agree with some of your points. If you are talking about Iowa's D as a whole the last 13 years then you are not very bright and nothing I say is going to convince you otherwise.

From what I've seen, we have a number of players from Florida and Texas. Rudock, Spears, Campbell, Hillyer, Bullock, Morgan. Granted, it's not our main base of recruiting, but it's not like we don't get some.

Every year of Parker's rein under Ferentz. Some flaws weren't previously uncovered because opponent's offenses weren't all that sophisticated.

Every year the Iowa defense doesn't get a pass rush, the Iowa defense is screwed.

So, with rookie or 'subpar' DLs playing for Iowa next year, I don't expect much from Iowa's defense if it's a clone of Norm Parker's defense.

as are most defenses.

For example, Nebraska, the NFL's Pittsburgh, the two teams playing in last night's BCS game?

What I'm saying here is: to have an effective pass defense, a defense needs a pass rush and good pass defenders. Iowa sometimes has a good pass rush but never has good pass defenders.

That's why Northwestern gave Nebraska's defense so much trouble this season. Nebraska had the pass defenders but the pass rush was ineffective because some of their DLs were hurt.

So what you are saying is, to have a good defense you need good players? It all became so much more clear now.

And Iowa never has good pass defenders? You are just making yourself look stupid now.
