Ferentz Presser for 9/23: Talking QB's and more

This confuses me:

Q. Have you ever had a time here at Iowa where you and the offensive coordinator haven’t agreed on who should be the starting quarterback?
COACH FERENTZ: I can’t remember one, no. I can’t remember one. I don’t think we’ve had that many tough calls, have we? ’08, we were trying to work through that, and you guys probably remember that stuff better than I do. Back in the first couple of years we were round and round and round. That was like the loser got to be the quarterback because three‑step and get the ball out. That’s all I remember the first year. Ladell Betts was the toughest guy in the history of the program. I think he averaged over 4 a carry that first year. That was an accomplishment. We were young.

Is this his answer? Or were there 2 answers combined, If not, KF needs to see a doctor. I think he had a stroke or has a brain tumor.

I took his use of the word "comfortable" to be more of a reflection of the fact that he's not comfortable having only CJ and no one backing him up this week.

That's certainly possible, who really knows with KF, he may have had several other thoughts behind that statement as well.

I'm no KF apologist, I would much rather see him be direct with his responses, but there's not a lot of hope for change at this stage in his career. I will say that by being vague about his QB situation, it creates a bit more work on the Purdue coaching staff to prepare so that is not all bad...

When I read the response to this answer I thought, this is someone who is lying out of the teeth of their mouth. Lets see. No, no I can't remember one? That answer sounds like me getting caught smoking by my wife when she asked if I had a cigarette, no no I can't remember having one. Then he can't change the subject quick enough to Ladell Betts. What on earth does this question have anything to do with LADELL FREAKING BETTS?? Tough as **** I bet but why is Ladell name brought up when pressed about ever disagreeing on a qb? What a bunch of garage he is spewing...

Nothing like a trip down memory lane with big ol kirk. Holy ****, who cares about what Bill Buthole did back in 1977.. Hes like uncle rico

JR is not losing his spot to CJ, when healthy he is Kirk's guy. Not doubt about that.

"This guy is not your average player. This is an exceptional young man going back to his organic chemistry test last year and all that stuff. Jake is just really wired the way you would want a player to be wired, any player, especially a quarterback".

I think you are wrong. At the very least it will be decided during bye week. If CJB hangs 5 TDs on Purdue there will be no turning back, and KF knows that. Even if we look better than the 1st 3 games it will be difficult to go back.

Well let's hope we get 5 passing TD's then, cause the difference in starting CJ vs JR the rest of the way could be a 1st place to 5th place standing in our division.

WHAT ON EARTH DOES AN ORGANIC CHEMISTRY TEST HAVE TO DO WITH FOOTBALL?? I am sure there are plenty of chemistry majors at the U of Iowa who have 4.0 gpas. That doesn't mean they should be placed center stage against the best athletes in the nation for the University's biggest revenue generator. Give it a rest, Kirk. If you are going to start someone because they are good at school, pick one of the tuba players to be our punt returner.

^Exactly. It's been well proven that you don't necessarily have to be a rocket scientist to be a winning, playmaking quarterback. The opposite is often true.

What's not to like? He practices well and aces organic chemistry. A future son-in-law that some fathers can only dream about.

Pretty clear to me what this was saying.

Ruddock being day to day means that CJ is going to start.

Ferentz was dancing around the QB questions because he didn't want to somehow insult Jake by giving CJ much credit.

I kind of got that feeling too.

I think he was interjecting so much praise to Jake because he feels bad that he is going to start CJ and also wants to keep Rudock engaged in things.

I completely agree and I'm actually to the point where I think most Iowa fans are foolish to really think Kirk is dumb enough to trot Jake out there as our starter(healthy or not) after what took place with CJ in control during the 2nd half at Pitt. There's no doubt in my mind that CJ will start Saturday. This team completely changed from the previous 14 quarters of football with Jake on the sidelines and CJ making plays.

All in all..Kirk would be really letting himself, the team and the entire fan base down if he goes back to Rudock. Nothing against Jake. It's for the best and I think Jake realized it himself watching CJ lead this team to a victory.

If KF can't see that talent that he has in CJ and how he could elevate this team with his play, then why are we paying him 4 million a year? JR will make a fine backup QB and can play in every game after CJ hangs 5 TDs on the other team and we a comfortable lead.. BTW..when was that?

With the last question in the presser... He said it doesn't concern him that games are one possession each week?

No problem with this if you're playing good big 10 teams, but when you're playing the teams iowa has played, I'd say it's an indication that you coach to keep every game close... And that's not good if you expect to be an upper crust team in the big 10.

I really hope your right, but the above sounds to good to be true and I'm really having tough time buying into it. What I see is a Sr. QB in JR that has won the job over Soph. CJ the last 2 seasons. I do hope I'm foolish for thinking KF won't be that dumb, but I do think that when healthy and able JR is his QB.

This is a great theory, except for the fact the Jake Rudock is a junior.

This.

Q. Is there a way of saying there are going to be some bumps in the road for C.J.? Maybe that wasn't on Saturday?*
COACH FERENTZ: This week, you mean? Well, there would be some for anybody who is in there, I think. That is just the nature of that position. I'm not saying I'm comfortable because I'm not comfortable right now, but I'm confident that C.J. is going to be well‑prepared and he'll play well. I was confident last week he would when he went in. He had a bad practice and that happens. So it happens to a lot of guys. Our team has not had‑‑ just that's part of the growing process. Hopefully as we go along this season we'll get better on a consistent basis.*
But all that being said, last week I was confident Jake would play, and if C.J. had it going, no reason to think he wasn't going to play well because we've seen enough of those guys in practice and in competition.

Wow, I can't believe it took this long for the salary to be brought up.
