Kirk Ferentz was asked about embattled former Iowa employee Peter Gray during his on the side segment and was irritated with how it was presented

Here is the part in question

Q: It has been out there that you had your players cut off contact with Pete Gray after learning about his behavior…is that true?

Ferentz: Where was that?

Q: A radio station reported it (KCJJ, item linked here) (NOTE: I added the link to the station story and ID'd them for your reference; they were never ID'd during the question and answer session.)

Ferentz: Then we know that is true…with all due respect. I do an hour of radio a week and I know everything I say.

Q: Did you have players cut off contact with that person?

Ferentz: I would not know that. I have yet to decide that.

Q: What changes in your preparation for Denard Robinson, maybe like Dan Persa who is mobile and and can buy time.

Ferentz: The balance would be more towards designed runs. Dan didn’t have many of those but with Denard there are a lot of designed plays to keep the ball or be an option to keep the ball.

Q: What changes defensively with a QB who has more designed runs?

Ferentz: It is an equal challenge. You don;t know what the percentage of calls are going to be…I’m sorry, I am distracted by that ‘It’s Out there’ (question on Pete Gray). I gotta apologize but that is so bad.

Q: I was trying to confirm something that we heard.

Ferentz: From where?

Q: It was a from a radio station, I guess. I was trying to get it from the horse’s mouth.

Ferentz: What is your question, I will answer it but not just something ‘that is out there’.

Q: With this person that was let go last week, did you shut off contact with your players after you heard about the allegations?

Ferentz: I am trying to figure out how it all…the person in question didn’t work with our players.

Q: So he never worked with..

Ferentz: He did in the past, it has been a while…a significant while.

Q: Maybe this is coming from a few of your former players tweeted about it.

Ferentz: I am not out there where I know all of that stuff.

(Iowa Sports Information Director Steve Roe cuts in:) ”Coach can’t comment on that anyway. Let’s move on.”

EDIT UPDATE: Marc Morehouse has more on the exchange that took place after the mics were off, where an F bomb slipped out http://thegazette.com/2012/11/13/the-walk-off-its-out-there-question/

" Reporter cited KCJJ after initial evasiveness. Ferentz questioned the question and then said, “You sit in here every week and you ask that [expletive] question?” Ferentz immediately apologized for the language."

I guess it got more heated after the OTS session was over..Morehouse tweeted that KF dropped an F bomb

The question was from Luke Merideth, who I believe works for the AP. Might have been better to say 'KCJJ has reported on their website that you cut off contact between Peter Gray and your players after learning of the allegations. Is that true?"

Saying 'It's out there' is probably what ticked Kirk off. Cuz there is always a lot of stuff out there.

KF's going to really lose it soon. He just keeps bottling up everything inside and the pressure's building. I'm thinking he snaps after the Nebraska game.

Jon,

Would you care to speculate why that caught KF so off guard? Was it the topic of Gray itself or the acctual accusation KF had his players cut off contact with Gray?

On the face it seems like a "harmless" question. I don't think Ferentz did himself any favors by bringing up he was distracted by such a bad question.

So now he has to be asked questions in a certain format so he won't get upset? A lot of things Kirk has done as of late coupled with his smug little comments tick people off, we vent here but can't say the "F-Bomb" since Kirk can is it fair we can too Jon?

Kirk has always been pretty good about answering everything he is asked..the answers may not always have a lot of meat on the bone, but he does...I am guessing he didn't care for the 'It's out there' aspect of it...which he later repeated when he circled back around to the question.

I have no idea exactly what set him off. Just guessing. And no, no fbombs here.

I sooooo badly want to post the classic Lee Elia meltdown from back in '83 when he was Cubs manager, but I just youtubed it and it is filthy and JD would pry ban me for poasting it.

Still, fair question to ask. No reason for Ferentz to pop off like that.

This can't be the first time he's been presented with a question under that premise of "It's out there" or "Rumor has it"?

Seems like a pretty strong reaction especially when Luke was able to come back with a named source.

The hiring of gray three different times. The hiring of ferentz son as the offensive line coach. Giving these coaches long term contracts that are to expensive to break. I wonder who is responsible for all this garbage at the university? You would think they could monitor what they are doing a lot better than that.

I guarantee you that if Iowa were say 7-3 or 8-2 right now, people would be google searching Luke's email, home addy, cell phone and wanting to burn him in effigy ;)

Oh, heck, Scorpius, go ahead and post it. I assure you JonDMiller won't mind.

The guy, whether you like him or not, has a full time job, and all the sudden he starts getting asked questions about a "rumor". Probably irritated by the way the question was gramed, and maybe the fact that the AD didn't make him aware that this might be out there.

I'd get irritated also. He was hired to coach football, and being asked a question about an internal personnel issue probably caught him off guard.

I can see it.
