Ferentz ego... Is it Brian's Problem too????

If we were chucking the ball around the field people would be screaming bloody murder to run the ball. This is nature of college football fans. Let's face it, Iowa has lost 2 games and was 2 to 3 plays away from winning either one. It's a fine line. It's frustrating, but IMO not some telltale sign of mass overhauls needed.

Well if we are going insist on running the ball against seven or eight in the box then we need to level the playing field and go to a power option like Nebraska and Oklahoma used to do back in the 70’s and 80’s. Power option right, power option left. This evens the odds as you have as many blockers as you do defensive players.

I know there's many fans who want(ed) Bielema to to be the next Iowa coach, and he's the exact same way. It's frustrating watching us try to 'establish the run' all game long. I'd like to see us 'establish the pass' to open running lanes later in the game.

YES!!!

I disagree. This brand of football has run its course. Sure it have been moderately successful. We have had some darn good years. But the zone blocking isnt working anymore. We wont get to the next level running it.
Maybe you are satisfied winning 7 games a year and going to a warm area for a game.

I want to do more. I want to win 10 games a year. I want to enjoy watching the offense with the ball.
This isnt going to happen under either Ferentz, Im afraid.

I have enjoyed some of the pass plays we have run. But their has been drops and over throws. That is the nature of the game. But with Iowa. when there is a drop or over throw, it kills a drive. Because we insist on coming back and running a zone blocking run play to the short side.

If we ever made it to the playoffs and ran into an Alabama or Clemson, they would chew our zone blocking schemes to shred with their speed and athleticism. Which I get we wont ever have. But we can dump the zone blocking and go man up and smack people around.

I get KF is a good dude. But sometimes you need to cut ties. Even with good dudes.

If Iowa had beaten Penn State this year, what would be the tenor of the discussions right now? 4 seconds. It's a thin line between love and hate.

I expressed concern and asked for the same changes during the 12-0 reg. season.

We have been running into a stacked box for as long as I can remember but this is the first year where nothing seems to work. It could be that our line just isn't very good.

EXACTLY for the first part of you're statement... WE have been doing it for years now....

so other teams have been getting better at defending us for years.
They CHANGE and improve we stay the same....

Dolph and Ed have repeatedly said this year the amount of stacking is higher than ever.

Doesn't surprise me with a first year starting QB. Couple that with knowing what Iowa specifically does on audibles and they feel they can defend that. They stack, show run blitz, then force Iowa to run to the opposite side of the blitz they showed which they are ready to defend. In a sense, they control Iowa's play calling.

Iowa is going to have to pass to loosen up the run. Nate is going to have to take chances and try to get the correct read and pass on blitzes.

You are correct. It is nothing new to have a stacked box with 8 and sometimes 9. Many teams get this on running downs, not just Iowa. They do have to execute.

Honestly, I just don't see what is happening to Iowa happen with the same intensity to other teams that get on national TV. Really haven't seen anything like this since the glory days of Nebby and OU. But they could deal with it with a power attack. As you described what they force Iowa to do, we get a lot of runs that expose Wadley to no or little blocking.

The subject of this thread implicitly asks if Brian has the same stubbornness in him as Kirk and I don't think we know the answer to that yet. Brian has stepped up the passing game with mixed results with an inexperienced sophomore quarterback and new receivers and shown signs of wanting to break tendencies. Yet the running game seems stuck in mud with Kirk's fingerprints all over it. We seem in a transition to who knows what with Kirk starting to near retirement. If we end up with Brian at the helm in a few years with Polasek as offensive coordinator we might really like what we see on the field. At age 60 I might die before I see Iowa take a step forward or I may really enjoy a new era- too early in the game to tell.

“There is no greater joy in life,” Moore was once quoted as saying, “than moving a man from Point A to Point B … against his will.”

I understand KF truly believes that football is a "MANLY" sport and confidence is usually always King. There are no shortcuts...NEVER show weakness... PRIDE in your craft... Do it the right way... blah blah blah....

why can't we be different this time? Why do the lineman have to make the run game work? Why can't we take the path of least resistance instead of making the players beat their heads against the proverbial wall? ... Insert run against 9 in the box here....

with all due respect to the coach he said it again today.

OUR GOAL IS TO BE BALANCED..,. Just like always.

I'm tired of seeing opponents sell out their normal strategy to beat us.... AND us doing the same old same old rather than respond in kind.

I have a really novel idea...

To hell with balance do what it takes to win that game....

When you start recruiting like Nick Saban I'll support you focusing on Balance and imposing your will on the other team.

For now I think the two coaches Ferentz better just start concentrating on finding the easiest ways to get results and to hell with theory!

It seems to be working pretty damn well for other teams....

Once again team ferentz sticks to its guns so to speak...

AW Has to be getting a little tired of this stale scheme...
