Ferentz Comment on Willies

A Willies question was asked in his presser. Here was his reply:

COACH FERENTZ: I got asked that earlier, and you've got to excuse me, I was working all day today. I haven't had a chance to get on the message boards and stuff. I'm really worried about getting our team, the guys on the team right now ready for this ballgame. That's where my thoughts are right now. We have another game coming up right afterwards. That's where my focus is.

Funny thing about his hilarious joke is that he will fail at getting the team ready to play on Saturday as usual so he may as well have been hanging out on the message boards.

Sure sounds like Kirk didn't even know anything about it until today. I still have hope Willies will be allowed back, but probably on a tight leash.

This is exactly the answer I was hoping for. He should be 100% focused on Wisconsin and nothing else. To think he should be concerned with anything else is ludicrous.

I'm thinking the scenario unfolded like this:

1) Willies has hung around and attended classes since informing Ferentz he was leaving the team to be closer to his father.
2) His ailing Dad told him to stay in school and he would move closer to Iowa City.
3) Willies told a friend (CJB?) what was going on and he wanted to return to the team. Rumors got started and eventually reached the message boards.
4) A reporter for Rivals called Willies and he supposedly said he was going "to try" to get back on the team.
5) Suddenly this gets blown up on the boards as Willies is back ...

except for the fact that ...

6) Derrick hadn't yet reached out to Kirk or anyone else on the coaching staff.

Just idle speculation. But reading between the lines of everything that's been said, it makes the most sense.

I 100% agree with this interpretation of events.

I'm guessing that Willies will come back on the team, with conditions. You'll see him at Spring ball.

Nobody cares about these message boards except the morons (like me) who like to read them and post on them.

Sorry, but that is the truth. Most of the Iowa football fans don't even read them....

How was he taking a shot at the fan base exactly?

And same can be said for many in the fan base. They sure do love taking shots at Ferentz.
I love taking shots at KF, especially when he is a total a-hole after his team loses in boring predictable fashion to a team we should beat. On the other hand, I am happy to give him credit if/when he deserves it. I think most fans give him a lot of credit for that run we had, but when we clearly get out coached and struggle with Ball State and lose to a bunch of clowns, then yeah, shots will be taken. That's message boards *snort*.

I took his comment as a distaste for message board gossip (and by extension, fans who take part). So maybe not the ENTIRE fan base.

Not sure what was behind that comment otherwise.

At any rate, it sounded kind of snarky to me, but maybe things can come across differently in print than in person.

Yeah not sure how KF can be criticized for this situation right now. How is he supposed to comment on a guy rejoining the team without the guy even talking to him yet. Hopefully there is a process whereby Willies joins the team in time for a bowl game/spring ball. You don't just say you're leaving and 4 weeks later say "I'm back" and proceed to go right to the field.

I don't know that Willies would have a "tight leash". He's young, he wasn't sure what he wanted. Happens all the time. He has a path to playing time next year with Martin-Manley and Powell being seniors.

Don't kid yourself. This was a vintage Kirk shot at message board posters.
