Fans Aren't More Disappointed Than Guys Playing the Game

I think as fans, we can get so tied up in our own emotions and frustrations, that we can easily forget that these young men care greatly. We're not the ones sacrificing huge portions of our lives, with all the sweat and blood, to win these games.

To hear them talk about it, it keeps things in perspective.

It's a really small window of time for them to make memories that last a lifetime.

I remember Albert Young telling me how awful he felt leaving Kinnick following his last game hearing boos after losing to Western Michigan. It's part of the deal but it's tough on them.

The guys looked worn out today. I think this season has weighed heavily on them.

While things like untimely TO's or penalties can shift the game and kids and coaches get frustrated that's part of the game BUT when you can't come up with a game plan at this level to move the ball more than 66 yards the coaches have to accept some blame. Call it not putting kids in a position to win...call it bad karma whatever. KF and his staff do some strange things LIKE FREAKING going for 2 when you shoulda kicked the PAT. You stay in the game for as long as you can. Like our walk on punter averages 29 yds punting and the scholarship punter sits on the bench. Like going entire quarters without a first down...and on and on it goes. BUT because none of us have coached in a Big Ten football game some on this board think we know nothing about football. HELL my MOM calls out when we are running that zone stretch play that loses 2-4 yards every time. I suggest our coaching staff lacks some real want to when it comes to formations.

Rob, Please don't post with attention to the efforts and sacrifices these kids make over a 4-5 year period. You will be accused of being a "snowflake" by the posters who consistently bash our program with no thought of the young men (and women) who provide them with the one of the great opportunities...the chance to follow everything that is Big Ten sports.

They gotta find a spark, somewhere, for 2 more games. While 8-5 with a bowl game won't take the "stinky" out of the NW and PU games, or the brutal offensive and special teams production this year.....it will help and give the guys a good memory finishing strong.

A nebby win and bowl victory...would be nice.

What's your point? Did you play collegiate sports or have your kids? I did and my youngest daughter is now. We always talk about what she could've done differently in order to affect the games that they lose they are there to be coached. One of the things we always talk about is how many meaningful games she has left which is depressing but true and it highlights the need to do your best every game BECAUSE of the time you put in. Coaches make huge blunders sometimes they are not all knowing. I HATE the excuse that "the kids just didn't execute..." while in certain situations that may be true I've seen coaches NOT execute which impacts the entire team.

To answer you directly in response to your second two questions: yes and yes. I have no problem with you given guidance to your daughter, in fact, I applaud you. But there is little to be gained from the constant bashing of other people's kids who play college sports. Your plethora of negative posts about everything you seem to feel our coaches do wrong gets really old. I would hate to think you are one of the many parents I observe these days who blame kids' coaches for everything that goes wrong. Execution, by the way, is the single most important thing in any sport. It is a shared responsibility between the coaches and the athletes. When KF stresses the lack of good execution, my take is that he is accepting responsibility, since any fool knows that successful coaching leads to good execution.

For me, it’s always more on the coaches than it is on the players. They recruit these teenagers with the idea of training them and molding them into a team. That’s their job. They get paid a lot to do it. I’m not saying it’s easy or that I could do it, but it’s their job to do it.

It occurred to me that the offense does not have a strong senior leader. It has seniors, some good players who are seniors, but no 1 strong upper classman who is a leader.

Being that the Nebraska game is only 3 days from now, it doesn't look good after seeing this.

No crap....coaches just doing the same ol this week in practice, with a team that is beat down?

Aye yi yi, this is just asking for a loss to a stinky nebbie team.

I wouldn’t take it to mean they’ll roll over in Lincoln. And it’s not like the ‘85 Bears are waiting for them there.

If we were paying you even a fourth of what our current HC is making we sure as hell would be expecting you to produce a winning program.

Sure, it's "more" on the coaches, but the mistakes we have seen have gone a lot deeper than coaching. Some of it is so fundamental it's frightening.

It's been a disappointing season for followers of Iowa football. Still, it's been a bigger bummer for the guys playing the games:

Why is KF holding the players accountable by having them talk to the media after games but not the coordinators who are getting paid big $? That is weak. Every year it's the same story. We are young and that causes inconsistent play. Wait until next year when the three LB's are gone. We have the worst WR's in the big 10. We are very weak up the middle on D, and that won't get better next year. The only way Iowa does well is when they have a weak schedule. Fire the entire Football and Basketball staffs and the AD and start over. Don't give me the "Iowa is a tough job argument". That is loser talk. If Iowa loses to Nebraska, don't even accept a bowl invite. I can understand the PSU, MSU, and WI losses this season, but there is no way Iowa should lose to NW and Purdue this year. No excuse.

I’m sick and tired of people saying turn down the Bowl Invite..Seriously STFU with that talk... Just give it a rest... I’m betting not 1 player would want Iowa to turn down a Bowl Bid no matter where it is so just stop the stupid talk, just because your a BUTTHURT Fan..

OK. Have fun watching Iowa lose to "Directional" Michigan in Detroit.

No offense but I disagree totally. You've got seniors on both sides of the ball that have experience in the program that are high quality young men that others have said in record that have helped the younger guys -- that's leadership. Ike, Boone, Welsh, Vandy, AW, JJ, the list is long. Player leadership isn't the issue here. Lack of coaching and game day leadership from the sideline. Part of leadership is motivation. How many times have we commented on this board that they "didn't look ready" or were sluggish coming out of the half? That's a coaching leadership problem.
