Expectations for Vandenberg next year

you have to be optimistic from what little we have seen of him. He was thrown to wolves against OSU and I really thought we were just going to get KILLED in that game. Vandy wasn't rattled at all. He gave us a chance to win the game and that's all we could ask for.

Honestly, Ohio State made it easy for him. They sat back in zone all game, but when it got to crunch time and they realized that they might lose, they dialed up the blitzes. And Vandy looked a lot like he did against Northwestern and Minnesota (who blitzed all the time). So I don't put AS MUCH stock into his OSU performance as some. He displayed the physical tools for sure, which are exciting.

But he had a long way to go in handling the blitzes, reading the defense, etc. Not to say he hasn't improved greatly in that regard, but we haven't seen it yet. And he won't be able to be a truly great quarterback until he shows that he can handle those aspects of the position. If/when he does that, with his tools, he could be the best QB we've had since Chuck Long. Not in the same sense that Stanzi was compared to Long (that wasn't even a competition, IMO). If Vandenberg masters the mental element, he could actually be a contender for the top spot, IMO. His physical skills are that good.
