Ethan Grunkmeyer...

Just get on SeatGeek and get some tickets. ;) Guessing it's an 8 hour-ish drive from Tennessee, you could leave around noon Friday, grab a cheap motel in Mt Pleasant for a couple nights. Super 8 is $65 according to Google. Snag a buddy to go with and it'd be a hell of a fun road trip
Yeah it's pretty much right at an 8 hour drive for me to IC. But I have a dog that I don't have anywhere I can take her for now and my couch is still the best seat in the house for games the older I get. Maybe when I retire I live long enough to do that I'll get back for a game but it's gonna be tough to entice me enough to get me to go now

Here's all of his experience in college football.

Couple ways you can look at this...

He's never seen a real defensive line. Ever. Iowa for all it's faults has the 5th ranked rushing defense in all of college football. Now that has to be taken into context with our opponents so far, but Iowa has a ridiculous d-line no matter how you stack it. So...he's getting thrown right in the depths of hell with no way to prep for it. PSU can practice it all they want, any way they want...but Kinnick + night game + QB still in diapers <> a good thing. He will experience things that give him nightmares whether they win or lose. Graves, Hurkett, and Llewellyn will be in his head that whole plane ride.

Iowa's secondary is terrible. If the Hawks can win the LOS and put a few panic attacks on Grunkmeyer that should effectively shut down the pass and allow pressure from LBs. PSU's OL has not been great so far, obviously. There could not be a better scenario for Iowa's secondary.

PSU obviously has to sell itself out to the run and there's going to be a lot of sweeps and reverses. Contain that, they have a shot at this. Fail to contain and it's probably game over.

PSU's rushing defense is 70th in the country.

On paper, this should be a blowout. But, remember...all that expectation crap is for the birds. This is likely going to be decided by 3 points in the 4th quarter and come down to something dumb like a PI call or missed chip shot no matter which team it is.

This

For all of Iowa's issues in our secondary they surely helped hold a top 10 team and excellent throwing offense in Indiana to 18 points of offense, got a pick and had to defend an interception thrown by Gronowski at start of game in scoring territory. Sky isn't falling here. They can do just fine against the fighting Sandusky's. I expect a W and a high probability for a lopsided one.

Not saying it can't happen, but I don't see the Hawkeyes steamrolling PSU this Saturday. How many backup QB's or ones that hadn't done much all season have the Hawkeyes allowed to look like Josh Allen? Remember the Tennessee bowl game a couple of years ago? This kid was highly recruited out of HS and has a team full of great players with better offensive numbers than Iowa. Look what UCLA did after firing their head coach. PSU is going to come out energized for this game.

Now I think (shouldn't do that) that the Hawkeyes should win, I just don't see a blowout if we do. At some point Gronowski has to show us something big for what he's being paid. He's bound to throw for over 200 yards in a game sometime....right?

Hopefully, KF keeps everyone grounded and throws out enough cautionary tales of teams rallying around their team and their staff that Iowa stays focused on this game. They are still very talented and saying that, even a back up with little experience might be able to step right in and excel.

As aforementioned, they have talented backs and if they can establish a run game, it obviously will put less pressure on the quarterback. This game should be taken no less serious than Indiana or any other game.

Actually, if you look at the schedule, every game is a must win, and hopefully they are focused on the "one game at a time" approach.

I generally agree with you. Penn St. is still a Div 1 program with quality recruits. I see a team rallying around an interim coach who really wants to win with the hopes of gaining the job. Dangerous game, IMO, especially when Iowa has some questions in areas.

It all depends on if PSUs players have any self motivation. It'd be really easy for many of them to be mentally checked out and looking for where they're gonna go next. They are getting pulled by everyone around them all sorts of directions. A fractured locker room would be a huge advantage for us.

Yet look at what's gone on at UCLA and how it's galvanized them. Granted totally different situations so it's just hard to say. I will say that if Iowa can get up early and feed off the crowd it'll make things easier on us. If it's a 1 possession game in the 4th q everyones assholes will be puckered up and into it.

This.

Saturday is the biggest trap game the Hawks have played in in a coon’s age and if the spread is more than 3 I ain’t taking it.

I think it boils down to 2 things:

1) Getting at the QB. If they can do that and contain the outside it’s winnable. There’s gonna be sweeps and reverses galore going on with this guy. Worst possible environment to start your first game—at night in Kinnìck with a crowd that will be well-oiled and loud.

2) Avoiding mistakes. Little mistakes lost the Indiana game. Little mistakes will lose this game. Whether it's a dumb boneheaded penalty, a bad interception, holding the ball and taking a sack, missing a FG, muff a punt...any of those things will lose this game. Can't happen. No margin of error.

A few other points...

CREATE AT LEAST 2 TURNOVERS ON DEFENSE. By far and away, the most reliable predictor of a win or loss in the sport of football is turnover margin. It's been proven a million times academically that nothing else is even close. Throw 2 picks vs PSU's one? We're losing. Cause a fumble, make a pick, and don't do either yourself? You win. Turnovers are going to happen at some point. You have to make it a priority to cause them, not just prevent your own. Have to do both.

Iowa TO margin this year:

ISU 1:1
Rutgers 0:1
Indiana 2:1
Wisconsin 1:3

See a pattern here?

Agree. Those players want this one bad. They hear all the talk and they want it gone.

Scariest game of the year for the Hawks by far. None of the others including Oregon are even close.

Some more background:

Grunkmeyer hails from Leis Center, Ohio which is 20 miles north of Columbus.

From PSU profile: Full name is Ethan McCabe Grunkemeyer...Son of Heather Grunkemeyer and Megan McCabe...Has a brother, Brady...Mother, Megan, played basketball at Ohio State (1997-99) and mother, Heather, played basketball at Gustavus Adolphus College (1989-93)

Both mom's played college basketball so there's got to be some athleticism, one might assume. Mom, Megan, played at Ohio St and one might again assume he grew up a Buckeye fan but probably didn't get a sniff from them but being a B1G fan goes to the next best thing, PSU. Mother, Heather played at Gustavus Adolphus, which is n Minnesota so there's a chance there might be a Minnesota/Iowa connection.

Does the name Grunkmeyer sound like the name of a QB?

This could be a coming out party for this kid. It will be interesting.

Also, it needs to be loud in there. Remember 2021?

8 false starts by PSU including a glorious 3 in a row. TV did not do justice to how loud it was in the stadium.

The Iowa fans will remember that game and the effect they had on the outcome. Especially in the North end. I look for a loud and rowdy stadium Saturday night.

I no longer have season tickets. But I will be there. Although, I think we got some decent tickets, but are in the SW section in enemy territory. Hopefully the PSU fans will be humbled early and won't have much to say.

I will be in the north endzone doing my share. Moved my season ticks from south to north last year. Love it!

I'll be on an airplane :(
