ESPN pulls live coverage on Stanford band after it mocks state of Iowa

I've lived a lot of places. I don't currently live in IA right now. But I'd move back to any of a hundred Iowa towns in an instant before I'd be back in California because huge swaths of the state are filled with douchecanoes like that. Try again, Scooter.

i think you're afraid, Sporto.

Yep, I pretty much stopped reading right there.

Gee, I wonder why people would want California to fall into the sea. Amirite?

Probably should have kept on reading genius; I was born and raised in Iowa and currently live here. But then I guess your myopic worldview prevented you from reading further.

The kids in the Stanford band are the definition of affluenza...too much money and a lifetime of helicopter parents telling them how clever they are. But they're playing a different game than everyone else. They call tonight a complete success.

Nah, anyone who claims that an entire state has a "myopic worldview" pretty much stopped learning about the world in their frosh sociology class. There's not much else you really have to offer. I bet you were a joy at Thanksgiving dinner.

You ever live there? I'm guessing not, you probably haven't even so much as visited, just a typical midwesterner with your myopic world view. I did, lived in both northern and southern California for about 8 years. I'm a native Iowan and for some reason thought it would be a good idea to move back here years ago. I was wrong, it was still as boring and lacking in opportunity as when I grew up here. For some reason I forgot that's why I left in the first place. Loved living in California, it's a beautiful state with a ton of different "cultures" and geography. Ocean, lakes, mountains, farm land, vineyards, pine forests, deserts, it has it all. I'm pretty much stuck here now but if I could I'd move back there in a heartbeat. There's a reason real estate is so expensive out there compared to Iowa; people actually want to live there!

As far as the band who cares? Lose the freaking Iowa inferiority complex; why should we be embarrassed about our agricultural roots? I grew up on a farm and I'm not embarrassed about it.

Blues, why move back to Iowa? Had to be a good reason.

I've spent significant time in every major city and area in CA, and driven the PCH multiple times. It is beautiful. Love to visit there, wouldn't want to live there. Wonderful scenery, weather...but absurd cost of living.

I personally don't have an inferiority complex, although I believe many lifelong "coasteners" on both sides, do have a superiority complex. To be fair, it's usually more of the "Metro" dwellers that believe they are superior. I meet with many of them regularly on both coasts.

The irony in all this hubbub is CA has more rural agriculture, cows, and hayseeds than Iowa does. That said there is some truth in most stereotypes.

The truth is if the Hawks wouldn't have been taken to the woodshed during the game. Few would give the bands antics more than a "well played, but FU".

Absolutely, I'm beloved by many due to my open mindedness to new experiences; you should try it sometime. When people never venture outside of their own little corner they do indeed become myopic, and they don't necessarily have to live in the midwest to be that way. However most of the people I live around are that way. I've lived in 4 different states, done business in at least 10 others and visited nearly all of the rest of them at some point. I've travelled to 15 different countries mostly for work, a few for pleasure so I certainly never stopped learning about the world but you sound like someone who never tried to learn much to begin with. There isn't a single state I wish to fall into the ocean or be destroyed because I'm not stupid enough to believe only I know what is good or bad about a place. I found positives about nearly every place I've visited, even Alabama and Saudi Arabia. I wouldn't want to live in either place but some folks do and that's fine. I just shake my head and laugh at how many Iowans make disparaging remarks about California when they've never lived or visited there.

The fact that we have a post taking offense to the Stanford band dissing us says a lot about our underlying sensitivity to our general backwardness. There are many positives to living in Iowa; geographical variety and rich cultural experiences aren't among those positives.

Family mostly which really wasn't a great reason in retrospect. My now grown kids curse me all of the time for moving back here especially in the winter :D. Only the oldest remembers California much but they still think it would have been a cool place to live.

You're right about the rural areas of California, it's the biggest area of the state geographically which makes the midwestern cutting down of California even more absurd. We actually have agriculture in common. I understand why some folks wouldn't want to live there; I love many things about NYC and understand why some folks want to live there but personally I'd never live there. To each his own.

Get over yourself. The Stanford band is everything I wish the Iowa band was. I for one am sick of seeing the damn "Sounds of the 70's" halftime shows for the past decade. The Iowa band has zero creativity, it's really pathetic. I get it, the band director probably was in school during the 70's but literally nobody else likes the awful music that the Iowa band plays year after year.

I can only stand watching "Thriller" so many times before my damn eyes start to bleed. "Oh my god, how amazing... the Iowa band is marching like Zombies... this is incredible!" shouts some slack jawed yokel from the stands.

I wish Iowa would have won just as much as the rest of you, but both the Stanford band and football team completely destroyed Iowa tonight. I'd love to see less reactionary garbage here, and maybe some acknowledgment that we could be doing better. Look at the MSU band, they consistently put together entertaining halftime shows. More of that, and less of this "sound of the 70's" discount sheet music trash that we've been doing for the past decade.

If you grew up on a farm then you know the saying "Don't sh!!t where you sleep. That's your first paragraph. Welcome back.

Many rural folk are in fact myopic and suspicious of "the other." They tend to be homogenous and fearful of change. They often look upon metropolitan people with a disdain rooted in inferiority. Look, unless you own farmland or have a corner on a professional turf or other profitable setup you're probably living in a rural locale because your options are limited.

Also, meth.

It's funny that the pc obsessed can stereotype farmers yet they would cut themselves or have candle light vigils if someone called a Puerto Rican a Mexican. .the hypocrisy is somewhat comical

In reality it's just a troll job

However if they really want to be the geniuses they think they are a true troll job is harder to detect e

Like doing some tribute to iowa that looks real but has subtle things that only some could detect

Their troll could be performed by the avg 5th grader

I was much more offended by the score than the Stanford MARCHING BAND's halftime performance for god's sake.

If people were actually offended by a marching band, I'm sorry. That's pathetic.
This was before he game and took shots at Iowa being and I'm putting this nicely: bigots, anti-gay and overall hillbillies. That's how I saw it and was done with zero class. They deserved to be booed I don't see how someone signed off on this? The humor and subject matter if meant to be funny was taken by all who heard it as offensive and completely off based and incorrect. **** the Stanford band

They certainly do. They got on TV, and you're talking about them.

Actually, they were on for about 1/3 of the time they were allotted. Or didn't you notice the large number of consecutive commercials after ESPN figured out what they were doing? The director probably thought, "Oh crap! We gotta get this off the air!", and told the announcers who fumbled and mumbled their way into a commercial and we had about 10 commercials in a row.

I believe the tree mascot was in trouble at a game before also. Lol Got into a fight with some other mascot. They definitely got it going on. It's probably been along time ago. Time really flies by when you get old.

Did Stanford play Georgia? Wonder what the Georgia mascot would to do the Stanford tree?

The score was an affront to the University of Iowa. The marching band offended the entire state, not just the University.

If you like that, then go out to CA and become a tree fan. Give me the Extravaganza before the "show" that the Treeheads put on. If you go to any DCI competition, you will NOT see anything like the supposed "show" put on by Stanford.

Yeah, because major metropolitan areas are meth-free.... Oh, wait. I've got a family member in rehab in LA because of meth.

Nikos the misogynist dooshbag

your inferiority complex is coming through loud and clear.

The irony of it all...

You're offended to the extent that you call people "morons" and "douches". You accused someone of misogyny all because they said "Hillary the cow". Sounds like you need a "doosh" as you put it, to clean out your sandy v-hole, ya hypocrite. It appears you're the one with an inferiority complex. Can't tell if SJW white knight or whiny feminist. Regardless, planned parenthood exists so parents can choose not to have children that grow up to be like you.

Hmmmm.......I guess it comes down to who's making fun of who. I'm sure Standford and their fans wouldn't like to be made fun of while getting their butt kicked in front of million and millions of people on tv. I guess sportsmanship means something totally different in California.
