He was an excellent big game coach, at least at the college level. Hence the .662 winning % against top 25 teams. Like the article says, he may have forced Royal out of Texas prematurely and who knows about Broyles at Arkansas, though Frank had his eye on the AD position.Wow , way too much for Barry. He coached at a total blue blood program so didnt even have to work to get talent there. Then you bring up the pros and he coached at one of the top nfl teams so again didnt have to do too much. I saw him make some bone head in game coaching decisions when he was at the cowboys.
Osborne also walked into a nice situation as he had the path to success paved by Bob Devaney. I think Jimmy Johnson is low on the list too, but his short career probably had something to do with that. He had a pretty good second career however as a NASCAR driver.
