Eric May

Eric May has been an excellent team mate and a loyal Hawkeye. If he were healthy (which he isn't) we would be a better team than we are right now. If healthy, he will get his share of minutes next year. He is our only Senior next year.

Agreed. And by all accounts he's a great person. My post was purely related to him as a basketball player.

What does loyalty have to do with it? Is he supposed to become a Badger fan while attending Iowa? I would love to see May be able to contribute, but the stakes are highger next season in year 3 and there are new players in the mix that have talents May doesn't. He didn't lose his starting job due to injuries, fyi. I don't know anyone that isn't pulling for the kid, but his ceiling is just not that high IMO.

Wow, talk about a well-thought out and reasoned rebuttal. Please show what in my post is not true.

I'm guessing he thought such utter ******** wasn't worth his time. If you truly believe what you wrote then you are...

1) Incredibly stupid
2) An enormous *******

I'll take that as a complement coming from arguably the biggest d-bag on here. I'm sorry the truth doesn't sit well with you.

This post has ZERO accuracy. ZERO. If what you wrote was true,he would not have played at Wahlert,a state title team. You have gone overboard to try to make a point,I guess.
He can dribble. I have seen him do it.
He can shoot. His shooting percentage is respectable.
His decision-making is average.
His defense is good when healthy.
His rebounding is average for a 6'4'' inch player.

Nobody claims he is all-league or a star. He has been hurt for much of the last two seasons. Just like when Matt Gatens hurt his thumb last year, and was struggling with his shooting, injuries have huge impact on players at this high level of college ball. He is not a superstar who can get by at less than 90%.
Next year,if he is healthy,he will contribute on the floor...just watch.
And like those who condemned Gatens in the past with much of the same language, crow will be served.

Obviously. You know what I meant.

I don't understand the desire to throw a hometown kid who’s clearly struggling through an injury and played a whopping 3 min under the bus. By all accounts he’s gone out and worked hard and given the team everything he can. He is what he is.

Some of you people are incredibly stupid.
Couldn't agree more, Duff.....

Lot of clueless Fools belittling a Hawkeye who plays hard. Really can't understand the reasoning behind this post. Eric played three minutes and missed one shot. Basabe played 18 minutes and was 0 for 8, Bryce played 14 minutes and was 0 for 3, and Zach played 22 minutes and was 1 for 5. What is the point of singling May out to criticize. Those who say he has No basketball talent have absolutely NO basketball knowledge, or are worthless trolls without a life.....

:)

This couldn't be further from the truth. May has absolutely ZERO basketball talent. Zero. He is an athlete, but a far cry from talented basketball player. He can't dribble, can't shoot, poor decision maker, and only and avg defender and rebounder. There is no talent there; it's called athleticism. Said athleticism will make you look talented when your competition is Iowa high school bball. However, you're exposed, as May was, when you start playing talented, athletic kids.

you play basketball?

2 things stick out to me with Eric May.

1. His decision making. This guy thinks too much. He just needs to let it go, be it an open 3 look, a quick pass before the defense recovers, or a juke and drive after a catch. He always seems to hesitate. He's athletic enough that if he doesn't hesitate he will blow people up.

2. His finishing. When Eric May doesn't hesitate he gets to the rim, but seems to put it up too hard or shoot an errant shot. I've never seen him shoot in practice, but this guy needs to put up a lot of shots in the gym and work on finishing in traffic and he will be a HUGE asset.

You can't play basketball with a bad back. Eric should take a year off and see if he can get himself right physically. He doesn't want to end up addicted to pain pills when he is done. The year would give him time to see if he can get right physically, graduate and make plans for his future, possibly including graduate school.

How many 6"4 guys with limited handles and shooting ability impact their team in the big ten? May is a role player who, due to the state of Iowa hoops, has been thrust into a starting role with great expectations. Going into your senior year you can refine skills you have, but you can't invent them. May is a tremendously gifted athlete, but that does not translate to a tremendously gifted basketball player.

Agree with CaarHawk that his back issue has disrupted his play all season, so maybe taking a year off for rehab and rest would do him good and he can reevaluate his situation down the road. The guy is a fierce competitor and not playing has to tear him up, but playing at less than 100% is something he won't do for the sake of the team. We will have lots of bodies competing for minutes next season and PT will be difficult for him to find IMO.

I agree, he could benefit from a medical redshirt. His top priority should be to take care of himself along with getting a degree. If basketball is a possibility again then he will be that much better playing his senior year in 2013.

Please explain the medical redshirt. He does have a redshirt year available. Are you saying he should sit out two years?

Is that even possible? Honestly I do not know how a medical redshirt works. But a back injury can take a long time to heal, especially if surgery is involved. I was agreeing with Caar on him taking a year off.

Well then whatever is best for May then. But I doubt he needs 2 years to recover from a back injury.

That would be weird having him sit out for 2 years and then play his senior season in 2014/15. He would "graduate" with White, Olaseni, and Oglesby.
