My mom's entire family...both sides...was from Mississippi.Since Feb of 2010 so almost 16 yrs. I was softened up within 2 yrs of being down here. And I'm not far enough south we still get plenty of cold yucky days here. Just nothing compared to what Iowa gets

I'm with ya. I loved winter when younger and could get around better. Skiing, ice fishing, even moving snow. But as now older I aways ask every year "Why the hell do we live here?" It gets old and dangerous at time if traveling when -25 to -30.My mom's entire family...both sides...was from Mississippi.
I used to not be bothered by the winter but every year I get older I hate it more. I've told the GF a few times over the past couple years that if our kids (we each have one separately who are 18 and 19) put roots down more than a couple hours away I want to move to Mississippi. Super cheap cost of living even compared to here, but there are still a ton of nice places to live. If our kids are going to leave Iowa we'll have to travel to see them anyway, might as well go somewhere warm and closer to the ocean etc.
I like it there. Most laid back state in the Union, cheap, no snow, and not touristy or high-priced like Alabama, Texas, Florida, Louisiana. Yeah I get that a lot of it is a poor, methed-out butthole of a place, but if we have our house and vehicles paid off by 60 years old (we will easily), we'll have enough money to live in a nice spot. There's lots of meth and political stupidity in Iowa too. Or any state for that matter.
When I was 18 in I entered volunteer service and lived in Jackson, MS for a year. 1976. Got involved with a lot of the old civil rights network folks, who were still around. At that time I had multiple friends get hauled down to the police depts in small towns for simply walking down the sidewalk with a person of a different race or because they were 'in the wrong part of town'.I'm with ya. I drove thru Mississippi years ago and even stayed overnight there. I honestly felt like a minority. Nothing wrong with that but I could relate to how minorities feel like back home. I ventured off the interstate to roll thru and check out a couple smaller towns. It is different. One can tell it is poorer or less expensive place to live. I realize there are more affluent, nicer and expensive places like the university areas, but where I was to the west of the interstate looked like a third world country at times. Just different.
I'm not sure what it's like down in south MS as opposed to the northern part which I'm pretty close to I'm an hour from Corinth MS. I'm like 2.5 hours from Oxford. The southern part is pretty different it's a long ways down there. I bet that area just NE of NO just off the gulf would be fun to go see someday. My mom's entire family...both sides...was from Mississippi.

I worked Mississippi for about 6 months following Hurricane Katrina. I was never so glad to come back home! And you asked a Jackson officer to see his ID? You lucky you didn’t end up in concussion protocol! When I was 18 in I entered volunteer service and lived in Jackson, MS for a year. 1976. Once when driving outside of Jackson, I got pulled over by a cop because of the "Legalize Marijuana" bumper sticker on my car. When he came up to the driver's side door, I asked to see his identification.
Bad idea.
