Eliminated From March Madness?

I can believe that. I think it's a scheme problem. Too much of our defensive issues involve our bigs defending too far away from the basket.

Do they normally get too far away in zone too? I know they do in man. But they were in zone too. Is that normal? It's like they care more about being in position to try to steal a pass then they do about being in position to play good D.

No. That's not normal. Unless you are closing out on a corner shot or something like that.
Too many defensive schemes can be a problem all by itself. It comes down to practice time allowed and how much time you can afford to spend on defense, in the allotted amount of time. Do you really have enough time to teach/learn 3 different defenses? Is it impossible to learn them well enough to be good at them? I've never been a fan of defensive scheme switches during games. I'm going to play 1 defense and I'm going to make sure my players know it like the back of their hand. I might tweak my base defense. Run some junk late in games, to confuse the other team and break a run. KISS. And in today's game, everyone shoots the 3 pt shot. So, I have never been a fan of zone defense and I'm less of a fan today, than I was 30 years ago.

It is hard to believe that this soon into a new season, the Hawks are nearly mathematically eliminated from the Tourney. Sad but true.

It's not from closing out on shooters. Well it's that too, but that's not what I'm talking about. They just creep up too far and leave the baseline wide open. If Aaron White could play against us right now, he would have 15 alley oop dunks per game.

So say we win out in the non conference. I thought before the season that 2 losses would have us on pace for firmly in, and 3 losses would have us on the bubble. Since these 2 losses are both bad, do you guys think we would be on the wrong side of the bubble still? Or does that just mean we would have some good wins that people who predicted 2 losses weren't expecting, so we would still be on pace?

I'm kinda thinking these 2 bad losses have us about 1/2 win behind what a traditional 2 losses would have us. So maybe for sure on the right side of the bubble, but still close enough to sweat it?

Pretty much, if we beat Vs Tech (big if) we can be pretty close to on pace with what we expected. Worse RPI from the worse schedule in this tourney, but helped a bit by a good road win.

you guys are hilarious... Iowa may not be a good team.. but to say they are eliminated from anything after 6 games is some asinine stuff.. and not only that about 12 people are saying it.

You guys do remember that this team is basically all sophomores and freshman right?

We may not be any good this year.. but the knee jerking is a bit much.

Saying no chamce is over board. But reality is, our chances dropped a ton. And that's not even factoring in how bad they look.

There's no way to tell how the season pans out. Hopefully these teams we play early will bump their rpi up over the course of the season.

After your earlier comment, I started paying attention to the post defense. Tyler Cook doesn't keep his butt to the baseline.

Yea players sneak behind him all the time. You cam tell by his reaction when they get the ball that he had no idea they were back there.

I would be curious to know if a team has made the NCAA tournament after losing to two teams in non-conference play who didn't win even 10 games.

We are saying it because we see the deficiencies, look at the schedule and start counting potential Wins/losses. Nobody is guaranteeing it. Hell, they could lose 20 games in a row, win the BIG tournament and still get in.
Maybe you'd like to go down the schedule, tell us how you come up with 17 or 18 more wins? That's what it's going to take, now that our RPI is in the 300s.
Count em up for us. Get me to 21 or 22 wins from the schedule. Thanks.

Except for that it’s not true at all...
It is pretty close to true. I don't think they will be able to win enough games to get that RPI back below 75 which is the minimum threshold for an at large bid. These losses and the future losses of those two teams will continue to haunt the team all season.
