Eight 2012 In-State Recruits

What's your thoughts on Jok?

I talked to both Pete and his "guardian" Tuesday night. Right now he is not going to tell anyone anything. He has plenty of offers, and I do not see a decision coming any time soon. And honestly, if he did tell me what he was thinking, I would not post it here.

I will not post "insider" info here that I have gained from knowing the kids personally.

I am, however, more than willing to answer other questions on general knowledge of the kids to help everyone here get to know them better.

Interesting info on Abrahamson not being interested in Iowa schools. If he has as high a ceiling as has been mentioned, hopefully his desire to stay in state will change.

As far as Sistrunk: I read an article from '08 that said he was 5'7" and saw him listed recently at 5'8", so that was where my assessment that he hasn't grown much came in. I can't find anything listing his current height, so I guess I was probably reading bad info.

As far as taking players from Iowa is concerned: I think it is silly and borderline foolish to say Iowa shouldn't have any players from its own state. Off the top of my head, I can think of probably 15 players that didn't go to Iowa from the last 8-10 years in the state that would make this current Iowa squad better. If anything, I think Iowa needs to put more of an emphasis on keeping top-tier talent in state.

As far as Ankeny having a bunch of solid players: I definitely think Schabel, both Meyers, and Egli are good players, but I don't see any of them as D1 talents. They project more to the D2 level (maybe earning schollies). Also, a couple of them (both Meyers for sure) play other sports; from what I know of Ankeny kids, when they choose a college sport, the typical hierarchy is baseball then football then basketball if a chance at more than one.

Final note: if you live in central Iowa, WDM Valley (Abrahamson) will be playing at DM Hoover (Sistrunk) this Friday night. After starting the year 0-4, Valley has been stellar for the past two months and looks to upset second-ranked Hoover. Definitely a game to watch in the CIML.

I'll be at this game as well. Hoover should take care of business on Senior Night.

Also, here are a couple lists of 2012 Iowa kids if you want to look into anyone we've missed:

NY2LASPORTS.COM - Player Search Results

IAHoops.com: Class of 2012

On the second list, you will see Corey Meyers of Ankeny and Amarah Darboh of Dowling listed as top-10 players. Meyers has missed most of this season with a knee injury, so there is concern about his recovery and how he will play coming off of that. Darboh will almost surely play football, as he is one of the top WR recruits in the midwest.

Cory and Cole Myers and Connor Schabel (2012) and Bryan Sumner and Ted Friedman (2013) are definitely talented.

I think Cory Myers is a D1 PG. Maybe not at Iowa, but somewhere for sure. He is a stud, and in my opinion is one of the top 3 PGs in the state. The fact that Ankeny is 17-3 without him is remarkable, and a testament to how well his brother, Cole, has played at the point (along with everyone else). Sumner has been great too.

Both Cory and Cole do play football, and may have a future there. Schabel only plays basketball.

As for the sophomores, I think it is too early to tell on Sumner right now, but Friedman will play Division 1 basketball. He already has interest from UNI.

great post, but this part got me ... since when are there three guard positions?

Sometimes a 3 can be called a wing guard. If a team goes small, a three guard lineup could be counted as a PG, SG, WG, PF, C. As opposed to the traditional SF.

What he said was absurdly stupid.

He wants the University of Iowa to ignore the state of Iowa because they can't land elite players from the state. His solution is to go land elite players from out of state.

What Fran should be, and is doing, is going out and planting a number of seeds and searching for the best player regardless of location.

Fran should stop recruiting kids like McCabe from Iowa in favor of recruiting kids like Michael Jordan. See, it's simple.

What elite players are you talking about? The ones that never give Iowa serious consideration like, well, all of them the past 15 years. If you want to hold your breath and hope we can land a class with a Horner, Brunner, Hinrich, Collison, LaFrentz, then you are totally delusional. Iowa MIGHT and I emphasize MIGHT produce one legit big ten player per year. We do play in the big ten, not the Summit League, so we need kids that can compete at a high D1 level. May and McCabe would not make another big ten roster and Gatens would be a bench player, but here they start / play major minutes. I get it, let's just expect kids that shouldn't be playing in the big ten to improve 1000% in 4 years so we can win with Iowa kids.

Remind me how many one dimensional Iowa kids Mr. Davis had on his good teams in the late 80's.

Thanks for the defense, but that was clearly a typo. It's been a long week. :)

I should have said both guard positions, and the SF spot. My fault. As I said above, it has been a long week! Happy Friday, everyone!

Hey guys, just wanted to let you know that I posted my CIML All-Conference Teams on my Examiner page. I am waiting for permission from Jon before I directly link the teams on here.

If you want to see them, click on the link in my signature, and then you can search for them within my page.

I spent a great deal of time in thoroughly putting them together, and would love any and all feedback from people here in central Iowa who are familiar with the high school basketball scene.

Thanks!

I have little to no interest in pursuing more in state talent. We aren't going to get the Barnes and Paiges and I don't think 99% of the others have any business playing in the big ten. We have 3 in state players on the roster currently that are underperforming and proving why we need an infusion of athleticism from outside the state. Last I checked, BJ, Roy, Gamble, Horton, etc., didn't play 3A ball in Iowa and we need that type of talent.

Im sure people use to say this about Iowa football recruits.

And ur '3A' argument is stupid. The type of basketball players Iowa recruits DOMINATE games at every level, and will even if they are playing 1A-4A. They get better while playing AAU Ball.

Also want to add.. the recent of Iowas good teams (Horner/Brunner years) werent they in the same class as Hinrich/Collison? Point being we can a ranked team not getting the 'elite' talent (Barnes,Paige)

That was pretty good, but what about a real conference like the MVC?

My job is to cover Des Moines High School Sports, so I do not cover anything else in the state.

I am familiar with many of the elite players as I have said before, but it would be unfair of me to regurgitate something that someone else has wrote about players and "All-Conference" teams from other parts of the state when I have only seen three non-CIML teams play (CR Washington vs SC East, Linn-Mar vs Waukee).

You can make an All-Conference team for the MVC though! I would love to see it! :)

I would like to see a tape on Sistrunk. Anyone have a link to a good video???

Love Hawkeye legacies! Might as well add another one!

Question: didn't Dwight Sr. play on the Primetime League for a few years? I want to say that he was a dominate player for several years. Anyone remember that?

Horner/Brunner/Haluska were all high school class of '02, and all three were top 100 players nationally by one source or another. Heinrich and Collison were class of '99.

Chris...good stuff and thanks for the info. I think a number of schools made a big mistake by not taking a closer look at Corey Schaefer...the kid has serious handles, great shooter and a coach's kid...he's as good as I've seen in a long time.

What are your thoughts on him?

I was fortunate enough to coach Dwight for a couple years, and still talk to him and his dad on a regular basis. I have tapes on him, but they are from 7th and 8th grade!

I actually just got home from their game with Valley. It was 17-16 at half, then Hoover turned up the defensive pressure and intensity and blew it open. Valley only made one FG in the entire 2nd half, and Hoover won 45-24. Abrahamson finished with just 7 points, 15 below his average. I will have a story on my Examiner page in the morning. (Too tired to do it tonight!)

Edit: here is my game story---

http://www.examiner.com/high-school...basketball-hoover-defense-too-much-for-valley

Hoover opens up Substate play next Friday vs Dowling Catholic at Hoover. Tip is at 7 PM. If you can make it to DSM that night you can see Dwight and our top football priority, Amara Darboh on the same court.

As I've said, I know them both well, and they are both GREAT kids. I would be ecstatic to see both in Black and Gold in the future.

Schaefer is an absolute stud. A gamer. I remember his varsity debut as a freshman at Hoover, and he held his own against a solid Hoover squad that night. If I was picking a CIML Player of the Year, or MVP, it'd be him. Love his game, and his intensity. The main knock on him is his quickness and how it projects at the next level. I don't know that he could be a Big Ten player, but I think he could play in the Missouri Valley. No offense to Welfringer, but I would take Schaefer at Drake over him if I was Mark Phelps. Just my two cents.

For those interested, here is Abrahamson's highlight tape.

The Judd/Schaefer comparison is intersting I had the chance to watch Judd play a couple weeks ago against DM Roosevelt and Peter Jok.

Judd is going to be a nice MVC player. I don't see a lot of available minutes at Drake next year so he will likely redshirt. He needs to get stronger and quicker to play at the next level.

Schaefer is a little harder to judge just based on the lack of talent around him and the amount of attention that is paid to him night in and night out. IMO he is a borderline MVC (mid-major) type player.

Overall I think Judd has a higher ceiling at the next level but Schaefer is the better player right now.

Peter Jok observations:
-His length is impressive.
-Range from the outside was also impressive-
-Needs to get stronger and work on the ball handling
-Has a nice mid-range pull-up
-Would like to see him get more aggressive and take it to the hoop (could have been the one game I saw-he might be more aggressive)

On a side note have to wonder from a DM Roosevelt prespective if they would've been able to keep Reed Mells at Roosevelt. He's been a very good player for Grandview Park Baptist. Reed is an extremely fast left handed point guard that used to attend Roosevelt through until his soph. year.

I know Roosevelt...don't claim to know any of the others. This is what I know.

Sistrunk - I saw him a ton in 8th grade and talked with his dad on multiple occasions. I thought his athleticism and skill set were incredible. I haven't see him nearly as much since because he ended up at Hoover. He (or his dad?) wanted a guarantee that he would start as a freshman. Hoover gave it to him. Dohrfeld and Roosevelt didn't give it to him. He open enrolled at Hoover.

Norman - He is a very good high school basketball player. He's a lefty as previously mentioned. He has the fundamentals and knows the game. He's even tempered. He takes a challenging class load...very intelligent. There's a good chance he's pretty much done growing. I like his game and his demeanor but he needs to play inside. IF he is good enough to play Division 1 it needs to be at a place like UNI, Creighton, etc. where he can play inside to mid-range and doesn't have to beat anyone off the dribble.

Jok - I"ve talked about him enough in other threads. He's a talent and a great kid. I will be thrilled if he ends up at Iowa but won't waiver on my concerns about his ability to stay healthy. He can definitely play and be very good at the Division 1 level if he can stay on the court. I'm not convinced he can but again...I hope I'm wrong.
