1) Mike Gatens is still a jackhole. He got all over a ref who made a call against Matt that could have gone either way. Someone else in the crowd (not me) started sticking up for the ref telling him it was a good call and to hold his crowd. Mike started yelling at the guy in the crowd, told him to shut up, and damn near started a fight.
2) Hubbard is listed at 6-5, is actually 6-3, and plays like he's 6-7. A few times he caught the ball in the post and easily overpowered McCabe for a bucket at the rim. I said it a few weeks back, JD said it last week, and it's true. From a physical standpoint his offensive game (and his physique) is a lot like James Winters, that said he has a LOT more ball skill than James did. IMO he will be a better driver of the ball, a better ball handler, and a better passer. He won’t have near as many turnovers as James had.
In addition he wore a smile the entire time he was on the floor. He reminds me of one of those guys who has come out of a very tough situation, whether it be re-hab, prison, health problem, or whatever, and realizes he’s made it, that he’s got everything in the world to live for and it’s all right in front of him. It’s hard to explain why seeing someone on a basketball court can dispel any concern at all regarding him getting in to more trouble, but it did.
3) White is more athletic than I was expecting. He’s got that easy elevation when he’s in space or out on the break. He’s also got a unique array of skills that we haven’t seen in a big man in a while. He seemed comfortable shooting from 19 feet as well as down low. Maybe a combination of Ryan Bowen and JR Koch.
4) The best player on the court was Jason Price (yes that Jason Price). Since leaving Iowa he has gone on to a pretty lengthy overseas pro career. He’s become an extremely efficient point guard. He’s a good distributer, and a lights out spot up shooter. I had to do a double take when I looked in the program and saw his name, it was kind of neat to see.
5) If I had to use one word to describe Andrew Brommer it would be decisive. When he caught the ball he was decisive with it. He was either diving straight at the rim making a layup, taking contact, or both, or he was catching with his back to the bucket and making solid moves to get to the rim. When doubled he was a decisive passer. He was also a bit chubby and couldn’t stay on the court more than 4-5 min without needing a breather, but I understand he’s coming off knee surgery and that likely impacted his conditioning a bit so I’ll give him a pass. He is also still a very very physical defender and foul trouble may still be an issue.
6) Archie still doesn’t have much offensive skill. He can run and jump, and put on a dunking display during pre-game, but when he catches the ball down low still doesn’t really know what to do with it.
7) Wes Waspun is the most athletic guy in this history of the universe. The kid has sick leaping ability, and showed decent polish to his game. I have no idea what that translates to in major college ball, but he was fun to watch in pre-game.
8) Devyn Marble was born to play in this league. He’s a straight up trash talking street baller. His game translates to huge stats in the Prime Time League but that doesn’t mean it will transfer into B10 ball. He’s taking A LOT of shots right now, and not all of them are good. I’d be much more impressed if he would pound free throws and mid range jumpers all summer and come back an adequate shooter.
9) Eric May took, and missed, a ton of jumpers at the free throw lane.
10) Basabe had the most disgusting dunk I've ever seen in live action. He was in the high post free throw line extended on the right side of the rim. Gatens drove from the left and put a layup that was short. Basabe cam from the other side of the rim, jumped from one side of the rim, caught the ball with two hands, and threw it down behind his head while jumping AWAY from the rim. It was literally NBA slam dunk contest material only it was in live action. It was ******* gross.
Lastly, there were a TON of alumni at the games last night. In no particular order were Bobby Hansen, Jared Riener, JR Koch, Cyrus Tate, Jarryd Cole, Jeff Horner, Wade Lookingbill (no pump fakes), Adam Haluska, and JR Angle.
