Drivers seat belongs to ............

Our offense is not designed--and never has been--for "basketball-on-grass". What it is effectively built for is minimizing risk to the defense, and to overall risk aversion. Not understanding that leads me you haven't seen a Hawks game prior to two weeks ago.
I understand playing field position and keeping it close to the vest . It has got us one BCS bowl win in 20 seasons

You obviously didn't see his first three seasons...
Yes I did . When we beat Nebraska in his fifth season in 81 I wasn’t surprised because what he was trying to accomplish and set an identity his first 3 seasons . You sound like you were probably astonished

Coming from a guy who mentions last season which is irrelevant to this season .

In the spirit of this thread, the answer to the original question is: Nebraska. If THEY win out they'll probably win the West.

Running game is an issue, but it's not the "problem". The problem is schizo play-calling. That, and using our FB inside the opponent's 40-yard line.

I've said it before, and I'll keep saying it: get rid of the FB. Use an extra TE to motion, utilize as H-back, etc., Even when we used the FB on a fake, it sucked.

But...if we are going to continue using a FB, use on who is credible as a runner, i.e., a Weisman type. What we are doing now isn't working, and all it does is invite a 9- or 10-men in the box from the opposing defense. With no audibles to pass, apparently.

When the guard play is so iffy and maybe the whole line play is iffy then you have to get the ball to your playmakers in open space. In this regard, and BF did it some in the first few games where he had split backs, you have to have your running backs out in the sideline flat areas to throw to if they cover the receivers and if Lbkrs come up to cover the running backs then a receiver should be open.

And if the defense wants to load 8 in the box you can outflank them with the split backs or keep them in to block but I would rather pressure the defense by sending both backs, each to one side, and get them the ball in space with short passes.

............ Iowa. Don’t have to hope for any upsets. We just have to win the rest to win the West.

Now having said that and knowing how we should have buried Purdue at home we could lose the rest, Lol.

Illinois seriously????? Well the cheeseheads just found out what happens when you take a team lightly in the B1G.

Today wasn’t a great game by our defense as they played just good enough to survive.

Our offense was pretty flat too. Don’t know what to say at this point. Yeah I know I said 10-2 before the season started but Inwas just trying to HOPE for something better than what everyone else was saying.

Wouldn’t it be hilarious if it happens?

haha

Maybe one "complete": game, but we have had several games with good offense. Not great, but good, good enough to win easily.

Bob if the offense looks good just because your playing seriously inferior teams is that because the offense is good or the other team is that bad?

I really liked the game against Ohio State. It seemed like Brian had the team well prepared. Then we turn around and looked terrible against Purdue. I believe it was said last season that Iowa was the first college program to send TWO tight ends to the NFL. Throw in Stanley who was picked to be one of the top QB’s in college football and yet the offense looked weak.

Before the season started Rob pointed out that with this being Brian’s third season that he needed to start showing that this offense is going in the right direction. That doesn’t mean beating up on middle Tennessee. It means showing up in a big game like Michigan or Penn State. Penn State today showed how questionable Michigan’s defense is. In fact I pointed out in another thread that even weak inferior teams averaged twenty-one points a game against Michigan. We scored THREE points. That’s what I am talking about.

The freshmen running back (Goodson) was showing great promise but then Brian went away from it in that game. If it’s working keep doing it UNTIL they stop it.

3rd season - 81 - iirc we played a ranked UCLA team - a ranked Nebraska team - and an Iowa State team coming off their best decade EVER - now we get to play NDSU and tell the world what an impressive FCS program they have

:rolleyes::oops::mad::(

BF didnt use Goodson enough against Mich and Penn St either. In both of those games Goodson is the guy with speed like B Smith and ISM who can make a big play. It is too hard for this Iowa offense to drive the field for TDs consistently or hardly at all so they need big chunk plays.

Iirc Goodson caught a nice wheel route type pass against Mich for 20-30 yards but I dont remember his number being called much in the second half. And Goodson and Smith made big plays against PSU.

ISM should be running about 4-5 deep fly routes through the middle of the field every game to occupy or beat safeties deep (purdue did it twice for big deep balls yesterday but the hawks hardly take the shot)

I thought his first season was 79 not sure why I kept thinking 77

Everyone was pretty shocked, although several of my buddies and I talked during the off-season after 1980 that the Hawks might make a bowl the next season because they were returning a ton of personnel on a pretty good defense. But NOBODY was picking the Hawks to beat Nebraska, not after the previous year's 57-0 ugliness.

The answer to this question is Minnesota, until they play somebody with an actual pulse, and then Wiscy and Iowa will try and kick them out of the car, play chinese fire drill with them, or leave them stranded at a Missouri rest stop cause they're tired of them.
