Don't blame Goetz

Yep, and half empty is generous. It was worse than that.

That's why the "careful what you wish for" rings hollow. Iowa fans aren't wishing for anything. They aren't kicking Fran out because he didn't win Big Ten titles. They simply don't give enough of a shit to show up.

What's the downside of making the move? Iowa has a losing conference record, misses the tourney, and fans don't come to the games? Like where things sit now?

I think Fran would have struggled to retain the better players on this year's roster. There was a huge risk in worsening the fan base's apathy...people aren't even pissed anymore.
It was time to make a change, can't really argue the point

Honestly though. If you wouldn't even be bothered to donate money to the men's basketball NIL, why are you constantly contributing to the men's basketball forum? If you want your money going to football, why don't you move your thoughts and comments over there? I kinda thought this was a fan forum for basketball.

And I won't be surprised if my comment gets deleted. It won't be the first time a comment of mine has magically disappeared.
Well since you’re going to take a shot at me saying I delete people’s posts on the board I’ll respond. I have never deleted a single post of yours, bub, and I have proof in the form of your user log which I can’t change, I can post it if you like, alongside a user with a deleted post so you can see the difference.

I don’t ban people, and I don’t delete posts. I let stupidity like yours (and my own) speak for itself.

You are more than welcome to hate me or my posts on this board, join the club. But accusing me of shady shit like manipulating content ain’t gonna happen. I don’t do that. You need to bring some proof if you’re going to accuse me of that again, because I’ll bring proof myself

So if you like, you can take your one post per calendar year average and voluntarily just “magically disappear” yourself.

What a high-quality contributor…

Good thing no one made his posts “magically disappear.”

It wasn't so long ago that the general consensus was we'll have no problem filling coaching spots based on what Iowa has to offer. Not saying we won't get a "decent" coach, but my how things change.

What head coaching jobs in the Big Ten are on par or less desirable than Iowa?

Northwestern
Penn St
Nebraska
Minnesota
Rutgers
Washington

Am I missing any others?

Not really much you can do when more than half of the conference teams have single players making as much or more as your entire team's budget.

No I totally agree, but despite what we like/love about Iowa athletics NIL is going to speak for itself and there's a good/great chance it's not going to be speaking in our favor.

I do think we have a shot at being a contender in football and the way things are set up now, unfortunately I think we (they) have to turn the focus that way.

The people making decisions have to come to grips that with NIL a place like Iowa can't support 2 sports, let alone 4. Wrestling and WBB are also both revenue generating and both sell out every year (for now). Wrestling I'm not worried about because Brands is a wizard at getting more donations than his portion of rev share would generate anyway, and once the Clark hoopla dies down (sorry, but it's gonna happen), WBB isn't going to be as much of a factor. Wrestling is used to being the underdog of the department.

Even if it's a painful decision, I still think you need to realize as an administration that you can't forsake both so you decide you're going to just put your efforts towards one.

lol. Don’t blame Goetz? She cut ties with a coach who would have made the same seed as WVU and then gets snubbed by him. Fran shouldn’t have been fired in the first place. She wanted to try to make a big move to show she can make decisions. Kirk has been given the leniency for worse. Fran Deserved Better. He’s looking for a new school to turn around as we lose every player and recruit we had.
Ok I'll bite. "Fran shouldn't have been fired"? I'm not saying he should have been fired without having someone lined up which we obviously didn't, but what has he done recently that should have made it a guarantee for him to retain his job?

2022-2023 season- 11-9 conference 19-14 overall- 0-1 in BIG10 tourney (5 seed) 0-1 in NCAA tourney
2023-2024 season- 10-10 conference 19-15 overall- 0-1 in Big 10 Tourney (7 seed) 1-1 in NIT
2024-2025 season- 7-13 conference 17-16 overall- 1-1 in Big 10 tourney (15 seed)

2022-2023 season 74.7 ppg allowed ranking 280
2023-2024 season 79.4 ppg allowed ranking 335
2024-2025 season 79.7 ppg allowed ranking 334

Fran had been around for 15 seasons. He couldn't control NIL, which affected retention, but what makes you think we wouldn't have lost a good amount of those players anyway. The fact is, the players were his. He was responsible for depth and recruiting, as well as filling holes as a result of players leaving. No coach should have a life time pass and their has to be a performance bar in place so what did he do the past 2 seasons that make you believe that "he shouldn't have been let go in the first place" and "she wanted to make a big move to show she can make decisions"?

With NIL being what it is we were most likely not going to be retaining our best all around players and after 15 years his philosophy never changed that defense and rebounding were essential pieces in having any kind of success in tournament play.

Do I think it sucks? Sure. But how do you put this squarely on Beth and say that Fran shouldn't have been let go? Injuries happen and players were still going to leave this year and that needs to be taken into account, but a win in our last game of the regular season was the only thing that got us into the Big Ten tournament. I simply don't see how that's acceptable on one hand, but on the other if that doesn't lead to the termination of coach what does? I don't see it as a one year window gaged by Beth, I think there were a number of factors in play, but for a coach on the hot seat the last two years simply weren't enough, in my opinion to say that he shouldn't have been let go.

I'd remove Nebraska from that list. They have better facilities, more fan support (they sold out their last game of the season vs Iowa when the only thing at stake was making the BTen tourney), fans have low expectations (as a coach that's a positive), and they have no other state university to compete with for players or fan $$.

This is it right here. I think the athletic dept got caught with their pants down thinking they'd be able to land a guy like Devries. Not that it matters much, but they should've gone after a guy who'd take the job with what NIL they have to work with.

Yes, that's going to mean our new coach is coming from Upper North Central Wyoming Tech, but that's going to happen anyways whether people here think so or not. Once you start offering and striking out with coaches you get more and more egg on your face and P6 guys aren't going to be real hip to inquire.

Coaching is a super tight fraternity and Devries has obviously been communicating within that circle what Iowa had shot him for an NIL number. That NIL number isn't going to change in the next few weeks...some big donor isn't going to come in and say, "Here's $5 million bucks for your search, Beth." hire your realistic directional college guy and move on.
