Iowa Basketball: Former Hawkeye, NBA champion to receive degree from U of I - Des Moines Iowa Hawkeyes | Examiner.com

Sorry if already posted. From article:

The NBA's all-time winningest coach will be graduating from the University of Iowa this weekend.

Former Hawkeye basketball player, NBA champion and NBA head coach Don Nelson will be a part of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Commencement at the University of Iowa this Saturday. The commencement begins at 9 a.m. and Nelson will hold a 20-30 minute press conference at approximately 11:30 a.m.

The press conference will take place at the practice gym of the Howard Family Pavilion inside Carver Hawkeye Arena.

Nelson left Iowa in 1962 and was just 10 credits shy of earning a degree. Saturday, he will earn his degree in physical education obtaining the necessary credits over his lifetime. The University of Iowa determined that his 30 years of coaching counted toward his student teaching requirement.

No big deal to me, but unless I miss my guess for most people their original credits from that long ago would no longer qualify them to be able to be used this many years later. Yet they aren't calling this an honorary degree.

I really don't care, but if he didn't take any classes or do anything academically then this should probably be an honorary degree. His coaching that is being counted for the last ten hours probably didn't happen at a time close enough to his date of taking his original classes to where they could legitimately be counted if the application to use them were it done right when he started coaching.

Like I said, no big deal. Just interesting. Hopefully no one jumps down my throat for questioning this.

Nelson, who played on the Boston Celtics’ 1969 NBA championship team and coached 2,398 NBA games, winning a league-best 1,335, said he won’t be tied in emotional knots Saturday morning.

Imagine how much success he could have had if he had a college degree.

I don't think there's anything wrong with your comment. I don't know what the expiration date on credits is, but it's longer than it should be. Of course, I say that as someone who enrolled in my first semester of college in 1982, stayed a year and went out in the working world. I finally came back in 2003 and graduated in 2007, and damned if those B's and C's from 1982-83 weren't right there on my transcript dragging my GPA down from a 4.0 to a 3.91 (not bragging, just stating the obvious that it's so much easier to get A's when you are a non-trad who knows what it's like to bust your rear at a 40-plus hour a week job every day).

Agreed. This Nelson thing is pretty stupid, really.
