Dolph calls out students on pre game show!!

Case in point. Tons of empty seats in the student section at Carver (unless they're let in for free).
This is a great idea, actually. If you don't want to lose the revenue of the premium seats and **** off the big donors, why not let students in for free? Limit it to first come, first serve in the student section only. They take the extra money they saved from the tickets and get good and drunk. Then they can send their drunken selfies to Sally mason!!!!
......I really should be in charge of all game day administrative decisions. Nobody in the current administration can be trusted.

Dolph is absolutely right! Iowa has the worst student participation in the Big Ten with the possible exception of PSU. Even Northwestern has a roudier student section. To give these no-shows prime seating would be a horrible mistake. Besides, two of the toughest arenas we play in, Hilton and Mackey have the students in the endzones. It's not the location that makes a tough student section, it the students.

Uh, it really only takes a handful of serious fans (fanatics) to lead the way. 25 boys ( students) lead the way by bringing 500 male students ( sorry girls) to the home games and get a bit rowdy. Girls, sorry, but you don't get into it- you just follow the boys to look at them and talk during the game. Stay out of the boys way! WHATTT?? YES. And, if you don't like that statement, then get to the game and YELL and JUMP , and wave your arms. Learn the game, show up, CHEER!! Or, go to the library and talk to your boyfriend later, AFTER the game. Show some SPIRIT AT CARVER!!! Come on guys- prove me wrong. Girls, get into it, or sell popcorn at the concession stand.

Come on Iowa , give me the seat near the court I'll scream and blow the reference's eardrums! I have the strongest voice in Burlington!
Yes I'm freaking loud!

Well, then if the students are too big of losers to support a #9 team, then next season take away all their seats, put $5 per game on them, and fill up with other people, as standing seating only.

Really glad to hear Dolph talking trash about the students (sarcasm intended). They were still on break! Meanwhile, I am on the road driving back trying to listen to the game, Dolph does an OK job with football, but he is probably the WORST basketball play by play guy that I have ever heard. Most local high school announcers do a better job. I don't know if he is old and slipping, but he can't keep up. So Dolph should sit down and STFU.

Not sure he was talking "trash", just stating the obvious that most posters on this board agree on. Break is a weak excuse, there are plenty of students home for break that live withing an hour or two of ICITY I'm sure that could drive to the game. And that still isn't an excuse for the lack of noise or coordination from the 3/4 full section that was there on Saturday. Even if there are some empty seats, the ones that were there could at least get their act together. Was sitting by a Michigan fan and even they were laughing at our SS.

What, some 40% of the students are from the Chicagoland area, yeah if I am a student I am not coming back to IC two days early no matter how big of fan I am.......they have TV in Chicago.

I went Sunday...Haven't been to Carver in a while....since when did EVERY FAN IN THE BUILDING decide to get up and head out with a few minutes left? Goodness....someone behind me said that's always the way it is....everyone heads up and out to "beat the rush" Well you know what...how about you support the Hawks?!

My guess is that they could reconfigure some of the seating, "relocate" some of the season ticket holders and not lose many of those same season ticket holders. And, if some leave, others would fill the spots. The question to me isn't whether they could do it, but why won't they. Are they really afraid that there would be a mass exodus of donors if they re-shuffled some seating arrangements? I don't see it. If they're afraid of that then they aren't putting much stock in the depth of loyalty of the vast majority of alums/season ticket holders.

Exactly. Never mind those who weren't there. There's no excuse for those who WERE. I really don't get why students of other teams make a lot of noise, but ours don't. Something in the Iowa City water?

Maybe they should put their phones away once they enter the arena. Oops....blasphemy!

Guessing us older guys could show the current students a thing or two. Heck, I went to a small private school and we were much more creative and coordinated and kept it clean at the same time. We got in a guy's head so bad one time that he air-balled a free throw and I could totally see he had one eye glancing our way at the time of the shot. He had been talking crap to us during warmups and couldn't back it up. Of course, we were right on the floor too! :)

The students get bad seating at Carver in order for the blue hairs to sit court side. Hard to blame the students for not getting excited about it. Duke, Michigan State and other venues that are dedicated to getting their students involved, have set the bar and we are sorely lacking!

I am growing tired of this "excuse" for poor student support. The vast majority of venues seat students in the end zone, just as they do in Carver/Hawkeye. Ever been to the Kohl Center? The Badger students out yell about anybody around, year in year out. They are not only seated in the end zone, but also they are severely limited in terms of ticket availability. I always hear about MSU and Duke. Then its always, "other venues." What are they, exactly? Sorry for the rant. I mean no offense but wanted to put out an alternative view. No, I don't know why Iowa students don't support the team in large numbers. The ones who do are certainly loud and into the game.

Wow. You haven't been to many basketball games at CHA, have you? Get yourself a couple of tickets in the middle rows, take a friend that like to stand and cheer, then get back to us with how many times you've been told to sit down. You'll need more than 1 hand to keep count.

I don't think CHA gets any louder than when the fans all stand up during a rally by the Hawks. I would prefer that to standing the entire game. Let the standing ovations occur when the Hawks really deserve it on the floor. My season ticket is around a lot of long time fans and they explode out of their seats when there is a really good reason to do so! Otherwise, they cheer loud enough when they are sitting down and everyone can see better that way. Seems to make sense to me.

Agreed. Why come to the game just to leave early? Isn't seeing the clock turn 0:00 for win one of the best parts of the game? And don't the players deserve an ovation for the entire game, not just applause for good plays during the game?

1. Classes started two days later. If you're seriously going to suggest that there weren't at least 60% of the students in town at that point, I really don't know what to tell you. Most people were back before MLK Day when I was in school.

2. That doesn't change the fact that the students who DID come back were absolutely pathetic in terms of volume.

It's not a good excuse. And I understand that a lot of other schools do it the same way Iowa does. But for whatever reason, they are not coming! So maybe it's time to up our game and give the students something to be excited about. Or we can sit here year after year and complain about it. The definition of insanity?
