Does the Tennessee offer to Washpun change things?

Does he suddenly become a bigger "get"?

Obviously he's the same player, but a high D1 offer legitimizes and enhances the perception.

No doubt the kid has athleticism to play at Iowa and many other schools. However I wonder if he has the necessary skills to that wll allow him to use that athleticism. Meaning- can he handle and shoot the ball well enough? Based on stats I question his shooting. If he's a good ball handler and is able to penetrate then I think he could help us.

This is interesting. Obviously this is Martin's Tenn. team now and not Pearls. Im iffy on washpun as anything more than a 3rd point guard for next year so he can develop more. But I've gotta think with the Iowa offer the coaches see his stock as rising pretty quickly

Washpun would be able to get by with his athleticism in the MO Valley, but the SEC and Big Ten....not sure. Let's say we offer and he accepts and we add Olaseni and another guard, we still don't have a slasher / scorer and our perimter game will hinge on Gatens, Oglesby and White. With deficiencies in the paint and beyond the arc, we would have to win with pressure D, low turnovers and hustle. Not sure I like those odds.

They both should've transfered to Jefferson then. That would be a great team: Waspun, Ogelsby and Uthoff! It happens in Des Moines; why is Cedar Rapids any different? LOL

If we sign Hubbard, wouldnt he fill that role?

We wouldn't have room for Hubbard in my scenario. Washpun, IMO, is not a court ready big ten backup PG, so we would have to go juco with another scholarship and I think everyone agrees we need a big. Washpun to get spot duty until soph year, juco PG to play immediately and a big to replace Cole. Cartwright is a gamer, but he had cramping issues throughout the season, so we need at least 2 deep at PG if not 3 deep.

In all honesty, if the offer to Washpun is indeed true, I don't think we are doing to well with the others on our list. A bit deflating if we end up with two kids from CR Wash.

If we get wes we need to get another point guard this year, preferably a JUCO like Pierre or Matt Glover. I agree a post, a wing, and a point are needs

I sure hope you're wrong about Washpun or Howe is wrong about the offer. Because we should NOT be recruiting players that aren't immediately ready to contribute.

I actually think if we give Washpun the oppotunity to redshirt, he could be a fairly good player for us. Think about it this way: What is Cartwright good at? Using his athleticism to penetrate and create shots for teammates.. This is almost the same as Washpun. Not a great shooter but very fast and strong, has good size for a guard. I don't think he's the "flashy" get we want or the immediate impact, but if Iowa signs Washpun, fans should not overlook him, and should not be disappointed.

Redshirt? This is basketball, not football. We don't need to add 40 lbs to this kid. Either he's a ball player or he's not. The redshirt talk has me thinking he's not.

martin is simply trying to fill scholarships after losing some huge recruits. he will be recruited over next year.

Are you serious about this "no redshirt" thing? I'm sorry but you don't really understand basketball then. For starters, good impact freshman do not go to schools that have a recent history of losing. Which Iowa has. Second, why waste a year of eligibility on him when he can ride pine, learn the system, and improve. Third, Iowa does need someone to play next year, a juco. and lastly, basketball players are projects, all of them. You, as a coach, are to improve them if you want to win. Iowa will not become good by getting 2 year players. Iowa will improve if Fran and the staff can bring in guys who are great athletically, and have some talent, and coach them up. You need to realize most programs redshirt, and being able to do that is a luxury. Would you rather have freshman come in and play every year over seniors who are bad? Or have 5th year seniors who are much more developed than the recruits coming in?
