Off the top of my head I can't think of another freshman in the league having a better season than Eric May. Playing on the the leagues 10th place team could hurt him though. What does everyone else think?

May is in the discussion...

but Crawford (Northwestern) and Richardson (Illinois) have slightly better numbers on teams winning a lot more games.

Crawford is far and away better than May, and the award is already his. Also, Watford from IU and Richardson from Illinois would be ahead of May.

My list in order:

All Frosh team:

Crawford-NW, Frosh of the Year...too much sentiment focused on NW for him to not win this...and he is deserving,imo...as NW goes for 1st ever NCAA bid. Complete player, very athletic, great size for an off guard at 6'5'',can go to the hole, can make the three..even has a mid-range game...very underrated out of HS..alth #3 in Mr BB in illinois last year...did not play much AAU due to his dad only being around in the summer with his work as NBA ref. I think his dad,a good player in his own right, really instilled solid fundamentals in Drew.

Watford- IU, has played a lot of minutes, has good numbers, clearly the best frosh big man in the league.

May- Iowa....another underrated kid out of HS, May has good numbers..and is deserving of recognition.

Richardson- Ill...very good defender on the perimeter, unusual for a frosh, and has shot very solid also. Seems like a clutch performer who is unafraid of late game situations.

Barlow- PU...a bit of a reach, perhaps, but he is on a top team, with many vet guards, and still found good minutes(altho LewJack's injury helped), and seems like a mature monster at pg ...he is at least 6'5'', 215lbs,and a good defender out on the perimeter...not a great shooter, but can finish in the paint..could be a great one...

Maurice Creek of IU gets a mention here...leading frosh scorer in the country(18pts/gm) when he went down with a season ending injury who is a very smooth operator at 2 guard...6'5'', great stroke from distance...athletic..but, did not play a single Big Ten game,so does not make the team.

Others who have contributed:

Payne-Iowa..too many turnovers to make the team, but solid future.
Frazier-PSU...see above.
Edwards-PSU- came on later due to injury but keep an eye on this guy.
Hull- IU...solid ,not spectacular
Cobbs- Minny...really like this kid,but was buried behind Nolen,Westbrook, and Joseph...but, has a higher ceiling than all pgs cept for Richardson and Barlow, imo.
Williams- Minny...again,buried behind a bevy of vets, but spectacular in flashes..
Brandon Paul- Ill...another high ceiling 2-guard who is somewhat buried by vets, but again, some big games earlier in the year...NBA potential, young kendall gill body.
Bade-PU...hawks wanted him, can see why, should contribute next year if Johnson leaves
Brueswitz-Wisky...another one the Hawks pursued..typical wisky krabby type..
Evans- wisky...redshirt frosh...4 year contributor.
Byrd- Purdue...another one Iowa pursued...nice body for a frosh 2 guard..
Nix- MSU...big body, will be tough as izzo works him into a hard body..
Sherman-MSU..decent hands, needs some of Nix's bulk, but will produce down the road
Morris- Michigan...nice size for a pg at 6'5'' seems erratic, but can shoot also..
Cougill- Iowa...good hands, good touch, bad belly...when he matures physically and hardens that body...will be very useful.

These also-rans are not in order....just a list of most of the frosh in the league who have contributed to their teams...overall, not a superstar laden group, but a good group who will help keep the Big Ten in the hunt down the road.

Excellent analysis JH, and I agree with it all. This was a down year for the Big Ten in terms of impact freshman, but you are right in that there are a lot of solid four year players here.

Here are the relevant stats between the four mentioned. I do think being on the 10th place team will hurt him but he stacks up pretty well. He falls a bit short offensively but without a doubt he is the best defensive player in the group. He's got to be a shoe in for the all freshman team.

PPG RB AS TO ST BL FG%
9.4 5.0 1.5 2.1 1.1 1.0 41% May
11.3 4.3 1.8 1.5 .5 .8 47% Crawford
12.4 5.8 .7 2.3 .6 .6 40% Watford
11.2 2.6 2.5 1.7 .8 .1 43% Richardson

This guy is going to be on some Big10 first teams and probably win a defensive player of the year award at some point.

Holy cow, you are predicting multiple All Big Ten First Teams? Wow is all I can say about that.

If I remember correctly, I believe Lick got bashed for this recruiting class. I believe people said that May could not step in and play. He was not a good enough shooter or ball handler. Maybe Lick is smarter than the people on this message board.

Back to the subject. I think it would be awesome for Eric to win the award but I do not think it will happen b/c of our teams record. He is definitely fun to watch though.

99% of the people on this message board don't form opinions on recruits based on thier own obersvations rather they regurgitate what they hear or read from recruiting services. Most of the recruiting services felt Eric was a tweener and would have trouble playing right away. There is a pretty good article in the gazette today about that and Eric.

I love Eric Mays athleticism. That is what I was most skeptical of coming in. I was hoping he had the ability to dribble drive, which he has not really shown to be the strongest ball handler but he can work on that some. I think his strength along with his athletic ability could allow him to be a dribble drive person even with less than stellar ball handling skills. Matt Gatens does not have the athletic ability of May so he needs a lot better handles to do any dribble drive, which is something he has not really improved upon.

TWR96, this great recruiting class still only has Iowa at 2 Big 10 wins so I don's know what you are trying to rub in people's face's. Eric May has a 40% FG, 67% FT, and 29% 3PT so he is far from a great shooter. Watching him dribble would lead most to say he is far from being a great ball handler.

I think Eric May has the most upside on the Iowa roster along with Aaron Fuller and only time will tell if those guys will meet their full potential.

I think you are off base on attacking naysayes though. They really are correct about his skills, however he has the ATHLETIC ABILITY to improve greatly on all facets of his game. He is just great at finding ways to contribute right now despite his poor shooting ability. I would say he is more inconsistent than anything. His shot is not ugly, but has some weird hitch or something in it.

What does concern me about May,Gatens, and Payne is their inability to go both ways off the dribble....now, Cully is a bit better than the other two, but still, if they are not proficient dribbling strongly with their off hand at this stage of their careers, it is unlikely they ever will be. Cully and Matt are not quick enough to beat defenders without two options...May might get by,but never reach his slashing potential.
They need to just dribble with their off hand after the season...everywhere..to class, to the bars, to the rec center, while they run sprints, doing steps...everywhere.

I agree with this. My hope with Eric May is that he is strong enough and athletic enough to be able to get by using his right hand even if teams know he is going that way. He will not reach full potential but I hope he will offer enough to improve his game. He shoots too many jump shots at times based on his athletic ability. He needs to draw more fouls.

Matt pretty much refuses to ever go left with a purpose. He will go left to reverse the dribble but he never tries to make an attacking move going to his left.

Cully does a good job of spotting the over play and will use his right when this happens. If defenders don't over play him too much sometimes you get him dribbling a bit too much on the perimeter not doing much. You see this late in the shot clock often, when defenders just want to stay in front and force a long three point shot.

Iowa absolutely needs someone who can go right and left consistently.
