Do you think that Hubbards departure had anything to do

Sometimes I think Iowans don't quite understand just how different of a place it is.

I can see your point from this aspect... (edit) but basketball would be the one thing that everyone would have in common no matter your background, so I think that would have, at a minimum, made his transition easier, no matter who he was with.

Interestingly enough, though... I've friends (age 22-28) that came up from Mississppi and/or Alabama to play football at Iowa Weslyan in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa and stayed after they graduated. They stayed because at how well they were received vs. where they came from. Many of them are mixed marriages and very few people take notice. Most of them said if it happened down south, they'd get heckled and everything else negatively thrown at them - from both sides. Can't say if the same is true out east, though...

I live in the Mid-South now and your friends are absolutely right. Still very much fighting race issues down here. I am going to get out as soon as possible for my kids' sake.

But the south is not the north east. The difference between where Hub came from and Iowa is that you can be anonymous in urban environments. In places like IC, there is NO ANONYMITY! This is what freaked Raveling out and why coaches still call him for advice when considering coming to Iowa. People in Iowa love knowing their neighbors and looking out for each other. This makes people from other places feel claustrophobic.

Seriously, unless you are really from somewhere else, you don't get it. You can talk about the fishbowl, but you really don't get it.

This makes a lot of sense, Carr.....

So because Hubbard wasn't on a team with other Hawkeyes that caused the other Iowa players to have some "underlying tensions"?

I don't buy it.

We are talking about a few hours a week in a recreational league.
The guys hung out before and after when they were working out, shooting hoops, etc... Hubbard lived with Mel. Blaming it on not being on the same team as other Hawkeyes in the PTL is just a huge reach.

It's a wonder guys like Cole, Cartwright, Marble, and Archie could even stand Iowa... ya know?

A lot of former Iowa players stick around the midwest, esp Iowa, after their playing days. There's something to that.

True... Always noticed that recruits tend to say how nice the people are in Iowa.

Truthfully, if there was one constant that drives recruits or players from Iowa - from an societal/environmental perspective... it's usually the weather or being close to their family. Now from a program status or academic perspective that's a whole different topic!
